Elon Musk is already giving up on plans to start his own party - and instead looks to back Vance in 2028
After the billionaire was ousted from the Trump administration at the end of May and a subsequent online feud blew up with President Donald Trump, Musk threatened to launch the new 'America Party.'
Now the plans have been shelved and the tech mogul has backed off because of his relationship with Vance, who is considered the frontrunner for the Republican Party in 2028, The Wall Street Journal reports.
'Musk has stayed in touch with Vance in recent weeks, and he has acknowledged to associates that if he goes ahead with forming a political party, he would damage his relationship with the vice president,' the newspaper reported, citing people familiar with Musk's plans.
In late July, Musk's associates canceled a call with a group that specializes in organizing third-party campaigns because the Tesla CEO wanted to focus on running his businesses, according to the Journal.
Musk is now considering backing Vance financially if he runs for president in 2028, though his allies told the newspaper that he could change his mind as the midterm elections approach.
It is unclear how recently the pair have been in touch. During an August 11 interview, Vance joked that he wasn't sure if Musk would even 'take his calls.'
A third party would only pull votes away from the two main political parties in next year's elections - though how much from each side remains unknown. Vance said that he hoped Musk would 'come back into the fold' and rejoin the MAGA movement by next year.
'He's obviously got a complicated relationship right now with the Trump White House,' Vance told right-wing publication The Gateway Pundit in a recent interview.
'My argument to Elon is like, you're not going to be on the left, right? Even if you wanted to be. And he doesn't,' he said. 'They're not going to have you back. That ship has sailed. And so I really think it's a mistake for him to try to break from the president.'
Vance added: 'So my hope is that by the time of the midterms, he's kind of come back into the fold.'
The Independent has contacted Musk's representatives for comment.
The billionaire, who bankrolled a large portion of Trump's 2024 presidential campaign through his America PAC, announced in July that he was launching the 'America Party' in response to the president's sweeping tax and spending legislation, the 'Big, Beautiful Bill.'
'By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it,' Musk wrote at the time. 'When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy.'
The bill was at the center of Musk's fallout with Trump, which escalated after the SpaceX CEO said that the president was 'in the Epstein files.' He later deleted the post on X and admitted he had taken things too far.
Despite Musk's plummeting popularity after he took a chainsaw to the federal government at the helm of the Department of Government Efficiency, a poll last month found that 40 percent of Americans said they would back Musk if he created a third political party.
Musk was ridiculed after the outcome of the Wisconsin Supreme Court race in April, where he put millions behind the conservative Brad Schimel, who suffered a catastrophic defeat against the liberal candidate Judge Susan Crawford.

Judge denies DOJ's request to release Epstein grand jury docs
Donald Trump was handed another blow on Wednesday when a federal judge denied his administration's attempts to release grand jury testimony from the Jeffrey Epstein case. U.S. District Judge Richard Berman deemed Trump's Justice Department did not provide adequate reasoning to unseal the highly-protected materials. He also said that the grand jury motion was likely a 'diversion' coming from the Trump administration. '[T]he court denies the government's motion to unseal the Epstein grand jury transcripts and exhibits,' the Clinton-appointed judge wrote in his Wednesday decision. It comes after Attorney General Pam Bondi moved at the direct of the president this summer to request the documents be unsealed in attempts to satisfy Americans who were enraged over the lackluster review of the Epstein files. The request came only after weeks of bemoaning from the MAGA base claiming there was a 'cover-up' and that Attorney General Pam Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel were not being as 'transparent' as Trump promised they would be. 'Based on the ridiculous amount of publicity given to Jeffrey Epstein, I have asked Attorney General Pam Bondi to produce any and all pertinent Grand Jury testimony, subject to Court approval,' Trump wrote on his Truth Social account last month amid the backlash. On July 18, Bondi filed motions in the Southern Districts of New York and Florida to have judges grant release of grand jury testimony from the [sexual] trafficker's cases in the respective states. Florida swiftly denied the request, while SDNY requested the government send their reasoning for requesting the years-old documents be drudged up. Trump's government argued in its reasoning that 'the passage of time has not dulled the public's interest in these cases.' It also revealed that there were only two witnesses in the case – an FBI agent and New York Police Department officer, both of whom are still alive. But Judge Berman claimed that the reasoning was not sufficient for him to grant the request to unseal the grand jury testimony. 'The Government is a logical party to make comprehensive disclosure to the public of the Epstein files,' Berman wrote in the Wednesday decision. 'By comparison, the instant grand jury motion appears to be a 'diversion' from the breath and scope of the Epstein files in the Government's possession.' He also said that Trump's administration did not exhibit there were any 'special circumstances' that would justify unsealing the documents. Berman has come under fire from Trump and his supporters in the past for being a partisan judge. Bill Clinton appointed Berman to the bench in the Southern District of New York in 1998, where he has worked ever since as a judge and then a senior judge starting in September 2011. It's widely known that Clinton and Epstein had personal, professional and philanthropic connections. Epstein donated $1,000 to Clinton's presidential campaign in 1991 and two years later contributed $10,000 to the White House Historical Association for a redecoration project. This got him and longtime girlfriend and accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell a ticket to a White House donors' reception hosted by Bill and Hillary Clinton. Maxwell is still serving out a 20-year sentence in relation to the child [sexual] trafficking crimes. She even spoke for nine hours over the course of two days with Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche in Florida last month to answer questions about Epstein's crimes. She was transferred to a prison in Texas days after the interviews and appears to be angling for pardon from Trump. Flight logs for Epstein's private plane the Lolita Express show that Clinton took at least 17 flights between 2002 and 2003, often with staff, Secret Service agents and Clinton Foundation supporters. Trump also has links to the disgraced financier and appears on his flight logs. Epstein attended Trump's wedding to his second wife Marla Maples in 1993. The deep connections to those most influential in political and business circles is what Americans think is stopping the release of files related to his crimes and his sketchy death. Conspiracies still float online claiming that Epstein was killed in prison in August 2019 and that it was made to look like he took his own life – even though Trump's DOJ concluded that Epstein did [kill himself].

A former Florida Republican who today is one of the left-leaning networks' leading voices, the host went on to outline why he believes Trump has little to worry about. 'He can just say, "Lindsey [Graham], go ahead - let's pass the sanctions bill and let's grind him down,' he explained, referring to the GOP senator from South Carolina. 'And the second thing is, well, you know, there was talk about a possible $90million military aide bill to Ukraine,' he went on. 'There's two things that would change the dynamics very quickly.' The comments continued Scarborough's surprise support for the president in recent weeks, and Geist, in turn, observed how Putin has continued to attack Ukraine despite the recent peace talks. Scarborough dismissed such talk as mere posturing. 'Vladimir Putin can huff and puff and say he's going to blow the house down all he wants,' he said. 'He's not the one holding the cards. Donald Trump's holding the cards right now. 'It will be very interesting to see if he'll play them over the next 10 days.' Just last week, he criticized Democrats for publicly complaining about Trump 's takeover of Washington, DC - where Morning Joe is based - while secretly pining for a crackdown behind closed doors. 'All democrats,' Scarborough said on-air August 12. A few days before, he said he agreed with Trump in his assessment that DC is now a dangerous city. The stars of Morning Joe, Brzezinski and Scarborough, are said to be in the midst of exploiting their power to 'leverage their stature within the network,' according to Mediaite's Colby Hall.

Federal agents arrested a protester for throwing a sandwich at them. Now artists are turning him into a resistance icon on the walls of DC
Some Washington, D.C. residents are adopting a new symbol of resistance against President Donald Trump's administration: the so-called 'sandwich guy.' This month, Trump mobilized the National Guard in Washington, D.C., brought in federal agents and placed the local police force under federal control in an attempt to stop a 'crime emergency' he described as 'out of control.' This comes despite available data indicating violent crime in D.C. has been decreasing since 2023, and even hit a 30-year low last year. Many residents have protested against the heightened presence of federal agents and troops in the nation's capital, but one individual has stood out amongst them: a man who was arrested earlier this month after police say he threw a sandwich at a group of federal law enforcement officials in Washington, D.C. Video of the incident quickly went viral, bringing nationwide attention to the sandwich thrower, who police say is 37-year-old D.C. resident Sean Charles Dunn. Now, new posters have appeared throughout the nation's capital honoring the sandwich thrower as an apparent symbol of resistance. Banksy-style posters honor D.C.'s 'sandwich guy' The posters are recreations of the Flower Thrower, a 2003 mural by the iconic British street artist and political activist Banksy. The original image depicts a masked protester throwing a bouquet of flowers, and is widely seen as an image of resistance and hope. But in the recent D.C. renditions, the man is instead throwing a sub-style sandwich. These posters have been found primarily in Northwest D.C. near the downtown area. Social media images and local media reports shared over the weekend identified posters in the Dupont Circle and Logan Circle neighborhoods, as well as on K St., an area home to many lobbyists and law firms. While some posters remain plastered up, others have been ripped down. Two of these posters can be seen near a liquor store in the Logan Circle neighborhood next to a bus stop. They're plastered less than a mile away from the intersection where Dunn is accused of throwing the sandwich. On Sunday, photographers also captured three of the posters plastered near the busy Dupont Metro Station, located just under two miles from the White House. The area is home to several embassies and think tanks. But when The Independent visited the station on Wednesday morning, the posters had been torn down. White residue from where they were once plastered is still visible. One social media post also indicated there was a poster hanging in downtown D.C., at the intersection of M St. and New Hampshire Ave., as recently as two days ago. There were no signs of the poster as of Wednesday morning. Residents who staged a protest against Trump's decision to mobilize the National Guard in Washington, D.C., over the weekend also held signs and props referencing the sandwich thrower. Photographers captured one protester waving around a loaf of bread. Others held signs that read, 'One small sub for man…One giant gesture for democracy' and 'Don't f*** with D.C. unless you want this footlong,' according to the local outlet The Washingtonian. Alleged sandwich thrower arrested by '20 agents,' attorney says Dunn, the alleged sandwich thrower, is now facing a felony assault charge over the August 10 incident. Police claim Dunn approached a group of officers on 14th Street, an area known for its busy nightlife scene. Dunn is accused of then pointing his finger at a Customs and Border Patrol agent and shouting, 'F*** you! You f***ing fascists! Why are you here? I don't want you in my city!' Police say Dunn then threw a 'sub-style sandwich' at the group, hitting one of the officers in the chest. Dunn was initially apprehended after fleeing the scene. While he was being processed, police say Dunn told an officer, 'I did it, I threw a sandwich.' Dunn's attorney, Sabrina Shroff, said in court he was released the next day with no charges, according to CNN. However, Shroff then learned a warrant was out for Dunn's arrest on August 13. Shroff said she called multiple government officials, but could not find a way for Dunn to surrender himself. That night, 20 agents showed up at Dunn's front door and arrested him, Shroff said. Dunn has since been released on personal recognizance and will appear in court again in September. Shroff declined to comment when contacted by The Independent. Dunn has been fired from his job at the Justice Department in the wake of his arrest, Attorney General Pam Bondi announced last week. 'If you touch any law enforcement officer, we will come after you,' she wrote. 'I just learned that this defendant worked at the Department of Justice — NO LONGER. Not only is he FIRED, he has been charged with a felony.' U.S. Attorney for D.C. Jeanine Pirro also shared a video on X touting Dunn's arrest. 'Assault a law enforcement officer, and you'll be prosecuted,' Pirro said. 'This guy thought it was funny—well, he doesn't think it's funny today, because we charged him with a felony.'
