ROME: Residents of Venice, already fed up with crowds of tourists cramming into their canal city, now have one more gripe: Jeff Bezos.
The billionaire Amazon founder is due to marry journalist Lauren Sanchez in a celebration in Venice from June 24 to 26 that is expected to attract countless VIPs.
Not everyone is feeling the love though, with some residents hanging a huge banner with an X over Bezos's name on a belltower overlooking the Venice lagoon before the sign was removed on Thursday.
"He's not welcome, not in Venice, not anywhere!" wrote the "No Space for Bezos" collective on Facebook, which was responsible for the banner.
Bezos is also the owner of space travel company Blue Origin, whose all-female flight in April carrying Sanchez, pop star Katy Perry and four others met with a public backlash for its high cost and environmental impact.
The anti-Bezos group, whose posters and stickers have been seen in recent days across the city, has called a public assembly for Friday evening to drum up opposition.
The UNESCO-listed city, famous for its romantic gondolas and canals, is a favourite spot for lovers.
In September 2014, it was the backdrop for the wedding of Hollywood actor George Clooney and human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin, a glamourous high-profile event that attracted countless tourists, fans and onlookers.
The atmosphere ahead of Bezos's nuptials appeared more hostile.
"Venice is a living city, not a place to rent to the highest bidder," the collective wrote on social media.
Venice's mayor, Luigi Brugnaro, had welcomed the couple's decision, however, saying in March that the wedding would bring in millions of dollars to the city.
City hall in March blasted "fake news" circulating about the wedding, saying that only 200 people were on the guest list and that the event would be "without any disruption whatsoever to the city, its residents and visitors".
Local media say that five hotels have been reserved for the occasion, as well as an impressive fleet of water cabs and a mooring for Bezos's megayacht.
It is unclear where exactly the marriage ceremony will take place. – AFP

He said the cable-stayed bridge is expected to be completed by the end of this year, with full operations slated to begin by April next year. 'Once completed, it will significantly reduce travel time from Limbang to the Brunei border, enhancing cross-border connectivity,' he said during a site visit today. The project aligns with the state government's broader strategy to deepen ties with neighbouring Brunei Darussalam, complementing efforts such as the recently established Sarawak Trade and Tourism Office in Brunei (STATOB). 'Currently, Sarawak and Brunei enjoy strong trade relations. With STATOB's presence and this new bridge, we're reinforcing bilateral cooperation. We've already reached an agreement with Brunei to jointly develop the region,' Abang Johari added. He noted that the bridge will serve as a vital tourism corridor, providing easier access for Bruneian and international visitors through Bandar Seri Begawan, which will be just a 30-minute drive from Limbang once the bridge is operational. 'This will position Bandar Seri Begawan as a gateway for tourists to explore northern Sarawak, with seamless access to destinations like Gunung Buda and Mulu National Park,' he said. He also revealed that the state government is actively developing supporting road infrastructure, including a new route from Limbang to Gunung Buda, which will improve connectivity to the Unesco-listed Gunung Mulu National Park. 'Gunung Buda is part of the Mulu range, and on the southern front, we are building roads from Miri to Marudi. 'The bridge to Marudi is completed, and the road will soon extend to Long Terawan in Mulu, which will eventually connect to the Gunung Buda road. 'This integrated road network will greatly improve tourist mobility and promote eco-tourism in both Sarawak and Brunei,' he said. Separately, the Premier proposed enhancements to the Limbang Museum, including the incorporation of historical and developmental video presentations covering both Limbang and Lawas. 'The Limbang Museum holds valuable historical records from the past to present day. I suggest that we include development videos to reflect the progress and legacy of both Limbang and Lawas,' he said. Arise Sir David! Football legend Beckham knighted
LONDON (AFP): Former England football captain and global fashion icon David Beckham has been knighted on Friday (June 13) for his services to sport and charity, with The Who singer Roger Daltrey and actor Gary Oldman also receiving the honour. Beckham, who played 115 times for England as well as for some of the world's most high-profile clubs including Manchester United and Real Madrid, will now be known as "sir" and his wife Victoria, a former member of the Spice Girls pop group, will be known as Lady Beckham. The 50-year-old, who has long been in the running for a knighthood, was appointed an officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2003 – a lesser award in Britain's honours system. Victoria later received the same award for services to the fashion industry. "Growing up in east London with parents and grandparents who were so patriotic and proud to be British, I never could have imagined I would receive such a truly humbling honour," Beckham said in a statement issued to the Press Association. "I'm so lucky to be able to do the work that I do and I'm grateful to be recognised for work that gives me so much fulfilment," he added. AI's arrival at work reshaping employers' hunt for talent
PARIS — Predictions of imminent AI-driven mass unemployment are likely overblown, but employers will seek workers with different skills as the technology matures, a top executive at global recruiter ManpowerGroup told AFP at Paris's Vivatech trade fair. The world's third-largest staffing firm by revenue ran a startup contest at Vivatech in which one of the contenders was building systems to hire out customisable autonomous AI 'agents', rather than humans. Their service was reminiscent of a warning last month from Dario Amodei, head of American AI giant Anthropic, that the technology could wipe out half of entry-level white-collar jobs within one to five years. For ManpowerGroup, AI agents are 'certainly not going to become our core business any time soon,' the company's Chief Innovation Officer Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic said. 'If history shows us one thing, it's most of these forecasts are wrong.' An International Labour Organization (ILO) report published in May found that around 'one in four workers across the world are in an occupation with some degree of exposure' to generative AI models' capabilities. 'Few jobs are currently at high risk of full automation,' the ILO added. But the UN body also highlighted 'rapid expansion of AI capabilities since our previous study' in 2023, including the emergence of 'agentic' models more able to act autonomously or semi-autonomously and use software like web browsers and email. 'Soft skills' Chamorro-Premuzic predicted that the introduction of efficiency-enhancing AI tools would put pressure on workers, managers and firms to make the most of the time they will save. 'If what happens is that AI helps knowledge workers save 30, 40, maybe 50 percent of their time, but that time is then wasted on social media, that's not an increase in net output,' he said. Adoption of AI could give workers 'more time to do creative work' — or impose 'greater standardization of their roles and reduced autonomy,' the ILO said. There's general agreement that interpersonal skills and an entrepreneurial attitude will become more important for knowledge workers as their daily tasks shift towards corralling AIs. Employers identified ethical judgement, customer service, team management and strategic thinking as top skills AI could not replace in a ManpowerGroup survey of over 40,000 employers across 42 countries published this week. Nevertheless, training that adopts those new priorities has not increased in step with AI adoption, Chamorro-Premuzic lamented. 'For every dollar you invest in technology, you need to invest eight or nine on HR, culture transformation, change management,' he said. He argued that such gaps suggest companies are still chasing automation, rather than the often-stated aim of augmenting human workers' capabilities with AI. AI hiring AI? One of the areas where AI is transforming the world of work most rapidly is ManpowerGroup's core business of recruitment. But here candidates are adopting the tools just as quickly as recruiters and companies, disrupting the old way of doing things from the bottom up. 'Candidates are able to send 500 perfect applications in one day, they are able to send their bots to interview, they are even able to game elements of the assessments,' Chamorro-Premuzic said. That extreme picture was not borne out in a survey of over 1,000 job seekers released this week by recruitment platform TestGorilla, which found just 17 percent of applicants admitting to cheating on tests, and only some of those to using AI. Jobseekers' use of consumer AI tools meets recruiters doing the same. The same TestGorilla survey found almost two-thirds of the more-than-1,000 hiring decision-makers polled used AI to generate job descriptions and screen applications. But a far smaller share are already using the technology to actually interview candidates. Where employers today are focused on candidates' skills over credentials, Chamorro-Premuzic predicted that 'the next evolution is to focus on potential, not even skills even if I know the skills you bring to the table today, they might be obsolete in six months.' 'I'm better off knowing that you're hard-working, that you are curious, that you have good people skills, that you're not a jerk — and that, AI can help you evaluate,' he believes. — AFP
