A Democratic legislator was assassinated; right-wing influencers coughed out disinformation

Just hours after Minnesotans learned that Democratic House leader Melissa Hortman had been assassinated, right-wing influencer Collin Rugg, who has 1.8 million followers on X, posted a report that hinted that she'd been killed because of a recent vote on ending undocumented adults' ability to enroll in MinnesotaCare, a subsidized health insurance for the working poor.
Mike Cernovich, another right-wing influencer who has 1.4 million followers on X, took Rugg's post and amped it up, but in the 'just asking questions' style of many conspiracy theories:
'Did Tim Walz have her executed to send a message?'
They were deeply ignorant about the MinnesotaCare issue.
Walz and Hortman — who was instrumental in passing legislation allowing undocumented people to sign up for MinnesotaCare as speaker of the House in 2023 — negotiated a compromise with Republicans in the Minnesota Legislature to end eligibility for adults, but keep it for children. They did so to win necessary Republican support in the 67-67 House to pass a state budget. Without it, state government would have shut down on July 1.
Both Hortman and Walz signed the compromise agreement in mid-May. This week, Hortman spoke tearfully about how difficult the vote was for her, but she was bound to vote yes on the issue because of the prior agreement.
Rugg and Cernovich's posts were shared widely and just the start of the disinformation.
Once law enforcement sources began revealing a suspect, right-wing influencers ran with an insignificant detail: That Vance Luther Boelter was a 'Walz appointee.'
Like many states, but even more so here, Minnesota is home to hundreds of nonpartisan and bipartisan boards and commissions, which are composed of thousands of people who typically win the appointment by simply volunteering. There are currently 342 open positions on Minnesota boards and commissions. Boelter was appointed to the Workforce Development Council by Walz's predecessor Gov. Mark Dayton and reappointed by Walz.
It was the equivalent of calling a Sunday school volunteer an 'appointee of the bishop.'
No matter, the Murdoch media machine, specifically the New York Post, had their headline: 'Former appointee of Tim Walz sought….'
Cernovich had his greasy foil hot dog wrapper and began constructing a hat:
'The Vice President candidate for the Democrat party is directly connected to a domestic terrorist, that is confirmed, the only question is whether Tim Walz himself ordered the political hit against a rival who voted against Walz's plan to give free healthcare to illegals.'
Walz had no such plan. He had signed an agreement to end eligibility for undocumented adults.
Joey Mannarino, who has more than 600,000 followers on X, was more crass:
'Rumor has it she was preparing to switch parties. The Democrats are VIOLENT SCUM.'
It was a ridiculous 'rumor.' One of the last photos of Hortman alive was an image of her at the Democratic-Farmer-Labor's big annual fundraising event, the Humphrey-Mondale dinner, which took place just hours before her assassination.
No matter, Cernovich wanted his new friends in federal law enforcement to act:
'The FBI must take Tim Walz into custody immediately.'
Finally, fresh off his humiliating defeat at the hands of President Donald Trump, world's richest man Elon Musk quote-tweeted someone again falsely alleging Hortman was killed by 'the left' and added:
'The far left is murderously violent.'
The suspect's 'hit list,' according to an official who has seen the list, comprised Minnesotans who have been outspoken in favor of abortion rights. CNN reported that it also included several abortion clinics, which doesn't sound like the work of 'the left.'
Right-wing influencers marred Hortman's death and smeared Walz on a pile of lies.
In a different, saner world, they would be humiliated and slink away. But the smart money is that during the next moment of national crisis and mourning, they will again lie for profit.

California Sues Trump To Hang Onto $4 Billion Of Bullet Train Funds

California's high-speed rail system is under construction in the Central Valley, but needs tens of billions of dollars to connect to San Francisco and Los Angeles. California High-Speed Rail Authority California Gov. Gavin Newsom said the state is suing the Trump Administration after Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced his agency is clawing back $4 billion of federal funds previously awarded for high-speed rail construction, the latest challenge for the country's costliest infrastructure project. Duffy this week said the decision to take back funds awarded by the Federal Railroad Administration during the Obama and Biden Administrations came after a compliance review that determined the California High-Speed Rail Authority 'simply cannot meet its obligations under the grant agreement.' He also cited the state's failure to identify a sustainable source of funds to cover the full cost of connecting San Francisco to Los Angeles, estimated to be as high as $135 billion, as justification for canceling the grants. Newsom's office said its suit alleges that the cancellation of agreements is 'political retribution, motivated by President Trump's animus toward California and the high-speed rail project, not by facts on the ground.' Currently, construction work is underway on a 119-mile section of the state's Central Valley, between the cities of Fresno and Bakersfield. Ian Choudri, the bullet train's new CEO and a rail and infrastructure veteran, is developing a new business plan intended to lower costs, accelerate construction and add private sector partners. 'This is just a heartless attack on the Central Valley that will put real jobs and livelihoods on the line,' Newsom said in an emailed statement. 'We're suing to stop Trump from derailing America's only high-speed rail actively under construction.' During his first term, Trump took back a $900 million award to the state, citing similar reasons. President Joe Biden restored the grant and provided an additional $3.1 billion for the project from funds set aside for high-speed rail in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Brightline West, a private rail project intended to connect Las Vegas to suburban Los Angeles, also got $3 billion of federal rail funds and is raising at least $9 billion more. It's doing prep work for the future line that will run through the Mojave Desert, but hasn't started heavy construction. The U.S. currently has no high-speed trains capable of hitting speeds of 200 miles per hour or more, unlike dozens of nations, including Japan, China, South Korea, France, Germany and Spain. California's project, approved by voters in 2008 with a $10 billion bond for initial construction costs, had an estimated price tag of $45 billion–long before the routing had been determined and the land acquired. The slow, tedious work of purchasing hundreds of miles of property, along with extensive environmental reviews, added more than a decade to its construction timeline and caused its cost to triple. Though track hasn't been laid, construction employing more than 15,000 people is active on a 171-mile section of the future line, with over 50 bridges, overpasses and viaducts built and 60 miles of guideway completed, according to the Governor's office. 'Canceling these grants without cause isn't just wrong–it's illegal,' Choudri said in a statement. 'These are legally binding agreements and the Authority has met every obligation, as confirmed by repeated federal reviews, as recently as February 2025.' New text scam in Colorado pretends to be DMV employee, alleges unpaid tickets

A new type of scam text message looks like it's coming from the Colorado DMV. But the goal of all scammers is the same -- separating you from your money. Lakewood resident Lauren Perrin almost got hit with it before asking her father to take a look at the message. It saved her from potentially clicking a bad link or sending money somewhere. "I had to ask two people, and the verbiage was very formal," Perrin told CBS Colorado. "It definitely fit the way that it would be sent if someone here said this." The texts have ended up everywhere, even in our CBS Colorado newsroom, where many of our coworkers have received the scam. The DMV says the texts have started to become more prevalent lately. When a person receives the text, it says they have overdue tickets to be paid, and, if they do not do so soon, there may be more penalties. "I think my text said I had one day to get all the tickets I never paid," Perrin joked. "But it came from a random number. It wasn't like 1-800. I actually asked my Dad and he said forget about it" In a statement to CBS Colorado, the DMV suggests not clicking any links to a suspicious text, not sharing any personal information or replying to the message at all. Those that responded to our question on the CBS Colorado Facebook page said they largely received and deleted them. If you have been affected by a scam text, the DMV suggests changing your passwords, contacting your bank or financial institution, consider a fraud alert and staying generally vigilant. Perrin now has a trained eye as well as a unique strategy for sussing out scammers going forward. "They're probably using ChatGPT or AI to make these texts, so I would run it through there to see if it was," Perrin said. "And just ask your friends."

How Sam Altman Outfoxed Elon Musk to Become Trump's AI Buddy

Just two weeks after Elon Musk's spectacular breakup with President Trump, the tech billionaire's nemesis strode into the dining room of the president's New Jersey golf club wearing a suit and a wide smile. Sam Altman, the 40-year-old chief executive of OpenAI, had just finished a long one-on-one meeting with Trump, and the two men were about to dine with the president's top donors. Trump introduced Altman to the club's applauding members as 'a very brilliant man,' adding: 'I hope he's right about AI.'
