Downe House Muscat welcomes Helen Booth-Smith as new Principal
Muscat: Downe House Muscat, a leading British International School for girls in the region, is delighted to announce the appointment of Miss. Helen Booth-Smith as its new Head of School, effective from the start of the 2025–26 academic year.
A respected educator and senior leader, Miss. Booth-Smith has been an integral part of Downe House Muscat since its establishment in 2022 having served as Deputy Head. During this time, she has led academic and pastoral provision across Grades 1 to 12, playing a central role in developing the school's academic standards and fostering a learning environment where every pupil is known and valued.
Throughout her tenure, Miss. Booth-Smith has contributed significantly to the school's growing academic reputation, helping to deliver excellent academic results and championing a culture of high expectations and achievement. As she steps into her new role as Head of School, she will continue to shape and refine the school's tailored pathways, ensuring pupils are well prepared for success in IGCSEs, A-Levels, or the Omani General Education Diploma. As part of the prestigious Downe House family of schools, Downe House Muscat offers a dynamic curriculum that combines the academic rigour of the Cambridge Programme with the educational excellence of Downe House UK, inspiring curiosity, creativity, and independence, while maintaining a deep commitment to Arabic Language and Islamic Studies.
A passionate educator, she has remained actively involved in teaching, earning respect for the value-added progress achieved by the students. She brings with her a rich background in British and international education, with previous leadership roles in Cairo and London, as well as experience with Teach First, where she supported school-wide improvements across the UK.
Commenting on her appointment, Miss. Helen Booth-Smith said: 'I am honoured to lead Downe House Muscat into its next chapter. This is a community shaped by care, ambition, and shared values — a place where every girl is encouraged to challenge herself and is supported to succeed. As we move forward, I am committed to ensuring that our culture continues to expect excellence and live kindness every day.'
Miss. Booth-Smith will work closely with the current Founding Head Miss. Michelle Scott to ensure continuity and a smooth transition of leadership. Miss. Scott will be stepping down at the end of this academic year after having successfully launched and established the school.
Mrs. Emma McKendrick, Headmistress of Downe House UK, commented 'It has been a great privilege to work with Miss Scott in her role as Founding Principal of Downe House Muscat. Setting up a school during the pandemic brought with it unique challenges and yet she never lost sight of the need to keep the girls' best interests at the centre of all that she did. Her commitment and dedication to ensuring the delivery of a first-class holistic education to every pupil is the most powerful legacy to leave and one which will live on for many years to come. I am most grateful to her.
It will be a great privilege now to work with Miss. Booth-Smith, Miss Scott's successor. Having known Helen as Vice Principal, I am in no doubt that she will continue to build and develop our school community with both grace and humility but also ambition. Enabling all our girls in Muscat to benefit from an education where every girl can shine will, I know, be at the core of all she does. Downe House Muscat has recently celebrated several notable achievements. In the past academic year, 100% of Grade 12 graduates secured places at their first-choice universities, both in Oman and internationally. Pupils were recognised with eight prestigious Pearson Education Learner Awards, including the 'Highest Mark in the World' for A-Level Arabic. Beyond the classroom, the Under-12 football team was crowned champions of the Muscat School Secondary Sports League, reflecting the school's commitment to all-round excellence.
Looking ahead to the 2025-26 academic year, the school will further expand its offering with the launch of its new Kindergarten for KG1 and KG2, with a curriculum that is supported by small class sizes, bespoke facilities, and dedicated Early Years specialists, creating a warm and purposeful environment that nurtures curiosity, creativity and confidence.

Oman marks World Oceans Day, renews pledge to protect marine environment
Muscat - On the occasion of World Oceans Day (which falls on 8 June every year), the Sultanate of Oman highlights efforts on protecting the marine environment and promoting ecological sustainability. Oman is considered a leading country in this field. Oman boasts a long coastline of approximately 3,165 kilometres that makes the country home to a rich biodiversity of coral reefs, seabirds, fish and rare and endangered species like sea turtles. Oman is actively seeking to preserve its marine environment through a set of elaborate initiatives and policies. The Environment Authority was established to act as the body responsible for developing environmental strategies, notably in the field of protecting oceans and coasts. The Environment Authority conducts studies and research aimed at understanding common environmental challenges posed by the marine environment like pollution, overfishing and climate change. As part of its efforts to promote marine sustainability, Oman keeps implementing a variety of projects, including the "Artificial Coral Reefs" project, which aims to rehabilitate damaged coral reefs, enhance biodiversity, support sustainable fishing and protect coastal areas. Oman has also established a number of marine reserves like Ras Al Jinz Marine Reserve, the Daymaniyat Islands Marine Reserve, and Al Khor Marine Reserve, which all provide safe sanctuary for endangered marine species. Oman's efforts also include awareness campaigns and workshops aimed at raising and developing the knowledge of citizens and residents about the importance of preserving marine life. In particular, such initiatives target younger generations, encouraging them to actively contribute to environment conservation efforts. Oman also accords attention to international cooperation in the field of marine environment protection. UAE committed to protecting oceans, advancing their sustainability: Amna Al Dhahak
Abu Dhabi: Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, UAE's Minister of Climate Change and Environment, affirmed the UAE's ongoing commitment to protecting ocean ecosystems and enhancing their sustainability as a vital resource at both the national and global levels. On World Oceans Day, Al Dahak said, "Covering more than 70 per cent of the Earth's surface, our oceans are undeniably essential to human lives and livelihoods. They are the lifeblood of our planet, regulating our climate, providing sustenance, and supporting countless ecosystems. We recognise, however, that our oceans face unprecedented challenges. From the impacts of climate change, evidenced by coral bleaching and rising sea levels, to the pressures of unsustainable fishing practices, the health of our oceans is at risk." She added, "As a nation deeply connected to the sea, we understand the urgency of these challenges and are committed to leading the way in finding solutions. We recognise the responsibility we have to safeguard these resources for future generations, and we are actively implementing strategies to mitigate these threats and restore the health of our marine ecosystems." She continued, "This year, World Oceans Day is being celebrated under the theme 'Wonder: Sustaining What Sustains Us", a theme that resonates deeply with the UAE's vision for a sustainable future. It reminds us of the awe-inspiring beauty and immense value of the sea and underscores the urgent need to protect it from the threats of pollution, overfishing, and climate change. Our efforts in mangrove preservation and coral rehabilitation have been highly successful. Work is underway on our coral rehabilitation project to outplant more than four million coral colonies in the emirate's waters by 2030. We are also working to achieve our 100 million mangrove plantation target by 2030. These are goals that we must all work together to achieve." Al Dahak highlighted the UAE's international cooperation in ocean protection, saying, "Our commitment extends beyond our national waters. The UAE is proud to be the first nation in the Middle East to join the '100 per cent Alliance,' a UN initiative by the High-Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy, calling on coastal states to commit to sustainable management of all ocean areas under their jurisdiction." "On this World Oceans Day, I urge each of you to become an ocean advocate. Learn about sustainable seafood choices. Reduce your plastic consumption. Support organisations dedicated to ocean conservation. Instil in your children a love of the oceans and teach them about the wonders of our seas. Every action, no matter how small, makes a difference. Let's work together to restore the vibrancy of our oceans. Let's ensure that the 'Wonder' of the ocean endures," the minister concluded.
