'The problem with the proposal is that it's too logical, it makes so much sense, just as it works in the NHL and the NBA,' says Jane Leavy, the preeminent baseball biographer whose

'But baseball is different. It can't presume the way those leagues can to eliminate the perquisites of its history, and so what makes sense doesn't always work for baseball.
'It's like, 'Erase the record books, erase the collective unconscious, wipe the slate clean.' Baseball is too much trapped by its history, I understand that and I get that, but it also is indebted to its history in ways that younger sports are not.'
Manfred would do it all anyway, determined as he seems to write a lasting personal legacy over what's best for the game. He's already overseen dramatic change, some of it excellent (the pitch clock), some of it OK (universal designated hitter, extra-inning ghost runner), and some of it bad (automated balls and strikes, automatic intentional walks). And he's pushed back on some truly awful ideas (such as the golden at-bat). But this latest salvo shows once again how much of his own baseball soul is missing, a willingness to use the inevitability of expansion to fundamentally alter baseball fandom and history as we've known it.
'In my mind, I think if we expand, it provides us with an opportunity to geographically realign,' Manfred said on the ESPN broadcast. 'I think we could save a lot of wear and tear on our players in terms of travel. I think our postseason format would be even more appealing for entities like ESPN because you'd be playing out of the East, out of the West, and that 10 o'clock where we sometimes get Boston-Anaheim would be two West Coast teams. That 10 o'clock slot that's a problem for us sometimes becomes a real opportunity for our West Coast audience.'

We get it — baseball hasn't expanded since the 1998 addition of the Rays and Diamondbacks, and has two existing teams, Las Vegas (via Oakland) and the itinerant Rays awaiting new stadiums. Travel demands have indeed grown, but part of that is on baseball for adding regular-season interleague play. And let's be honest, the private chartered life of a baseball player is not the same as flying commercial. Plus, baseball could help that problem with smarter scheduling on its own, grouping cross-country road trips and emphasizing division rivalries.
But Manfred would rather blow it all up, or at least bring the idea to the upcoming bargaining table with the players' union, attempting to curry favor with ideas as better for player well-being, while ignoring what it might mean to longtime fans who thrive on those rivalries, who grew up with those adversaries, who invested those emotions.
'I don't like any of that,' Hall of Famer Jim Kaat agreed. 'What's the World Series going to be like without the competition of the two leagues?'
Kaat already is on record about baseball
So, apparently, is the link to the past.
'You can see that incrementally they've been working toward this. I've heard about it for years,' Leavy said. 'I understand, but there's got to be a way to balance the needs of growth and modernity without erasing the game's essential self.'

New TV deal for Southland

The Southland Conference will get more exposure in the coming years. On Wednesday, the league announced it signed a multi-year agreement with CBS Sports to televise future league events on linear television. Starting in the 2025-26 season, CBS Sports Network will televise up to five men's basketball games annually, adding to the deal the league recently renewed with ESPN earlier this month. It is a big win for the conference and its commissioner, Chris Grant, who continues to try to build the league's brand on the regional and national levels. 'Adding CBS Sports to our media rights lineup is another huge win for the Southland,' said Grant in a statement. 'This partnership amplifies our momentum, puts even more of our incredible student-athletes on national television, and shows that the Southland brand continues to surge forward. We're thrilled to bring our basketball programs to an even bigger audience.' Southland men's basketball has been on the rise the last two years, thanks in large part to the elevation of the McNeese basketball program, which won its first NCAA Tournament game last season. Under head coach Will Wade, the Cowboys became a national sensation last season when they upset Clemson in the tourney. They fell to Purdue in the second round. After winning the last two Southland titles, Wade moved on to North Carolina State, while the Cowboys named Bill Armstrong the new head coach. The new deal with CBS Sports makes the Southland a growing mid-major league in terms of national exposure, something Grant has been trying to accomplish. 'Visibility is currency in college athletics,' added Grant. 'With CBS Sports joining ESPN as a Southland media partner, we're not just showing up—we're standing out.' The new deal will be a boost to McNeese, which is likely going to get more exposure as well as the league's current top dog. 'I'm thrilled about this new TV contract,' said McNeese State head coach Heath Schroyer. 'Not only did we get a new and better deal with ESPN, but having five more basketball games on linear TV is a game changer for the Southland. 'This enhances our brand as a conference in a way nothing else can.' Schroyer gave credit to his commissioner. 'What Chris Grant has done for this league in a very short amount of time is simply amazing,' Schroyer said. 'The league is in a great place, and this new contract with CBS signifies that. I couldn't be happier or more excited.' Saturday, the conference will be on center stage when Incarnate Word travels to Nicholls to help open the new football season on one of the ESPN networks. 'That game is a great opportunity for our league to showcase some of the talent we have,' said Grant. Last year, McNeese opened the season on ESPN linear at Tarleton State during Week 0.

Falcons OT Storm Norton out 6-8 weeks after ankle surgery

The Falcons offensive line is having a tough day on the injury front on Wednesday. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that tackle Storm Norton is set to miss six-to-eight weeks after having ankle surgery. Norton has been sideline for an extended period of time this month. The news of Norton's timeline comes shortly after right tackle Kaleb McGary was carted off the field at practice. McGary appeared to suffer a lower left leg injury and the Falcons said he will have an MRI. Norton, who has been in 31 games for the team over the last two years, would have been next in line at right tackle if healthy. Elijah Wilkinson took over after McGary's injury and the Falcons may have to look for more help if McGary is set for a long absence from the lineup.

College Football Playoff reveals rankings schedule, adjusted metrics

The first College Football Playoff rankings will be announced Nov. 4 on ESPN. File Photo by Aaron Josefczyk/UPI | License Photo Aug. 20 (UPI) -- The College Football Playoff committee on Wednesday announced its rankings schedule and adjustments and additions to metrics used to determine its criteria. "All of these modifications will help the selection committee as they rank the Top 25 teams," College Football Playoff executive director Rich Clark said in a news release. The first edition of the rankings will be announced at 8 p.m. EST Nov. 4. Additional rankings will be announced the next four Tuesdays. The final rankings revelation will be Dec. 7. Each edition of the rankings will be revealed on ESPN broadcasts. The committee convened a data analytics panel and membership panel to assess policies, procedures and data analytics before instituting changes to tools they use to assess schedule strength and how teams performance against those schedules. Current schedule strength metrics were adjusted, applying more weight to games against strong opponents. The committee added an additional metric -- record strength -- to assess how a team performed against its schedule. The metric will reward teams that beat high-quality opponents while shrinking penalties for losing to those teams. The changes also will result in providing minimal reward for beating a lower-quality foe, while enforcing stronger penalties against those who lose to those teams. The committee previously announced seeding and bye modifications for the College Football Playoff. That policy will result in the five highest-ranked conference champions receiving a place in the field, but no longer feature a bye for the four-highest-ranked champions. As a result of that change, the four highest-ranked teams in the final College Football Playoff rankings will now receive first-round byes. "We feel these changes will help construct a postseason bracket that recognizes the best performances and teams on the field during the regular season, and I want to thank our veteran selection committee members and data analytics groups for helping implement these changes," Clark said.
