Probiotics can help heal ravaged coral reefs

Probiotics are everywhere, claiming to help us poop, restore gut health, and more. They can also be used to help threatened coral reefs. A bacterial probiotic has helped slow the spread of stony coral tissue loss disease (SCTLD) in wild corals in Florida that were already infected with the disease. The findings are detailed in a study published June 5 in the journal Frontiers in Marine Science and show that applying this new probiotic treatment across coral colines helped prevent further tissue loss.
SCTLD first emerged in Florida in 2014. In the 11 years since, it has rapidly spread throughout the Caribbean. This mysterious ailment has been confirmed in at least 20 other countries and territories.
Other coral pathogens typically target specific species. SCTLD infects more than 30 different species of stony corals, including pillar corals and brain corals. The disease causes the soft tissue in the corals to slough off, leaving behind white patches of exposed skeleton. The disease can devastate an entire coral colony in only a few weeks to months.
The exact cause of SCTLD is still unknown, but it appears to be linked to some kind of harmful bacteria. Currently, the most common treatment for SCTLD is using a paste that contains the antibiotic amoxicillin on diseased corals. However, antibiotics are not a silver bullet. This amoxicillin balm can temporarily halt SCTLD's spread, but it needs to be frequently reapplied to the lesions on the corals. This takes time and resources, while increasing the likelihood that the microbes causing SCTLD might develop resistance to amoxicillin and related antibiotics.
'Antibiotics do not stop future outbreaks,' Valerie Paul, a study co-author and the head scientist at the Smithsonian Marine Station at Fort Pierce, Florida, said in a statement. 'The disease can quickly come back, even on the same coral colonies that have been treated.'
Paul and her colleagues have spent over six years investigating whether beneficial microorganisms (aka probiotics) could be a longer lasting alternative to combat this pathogen.
Just like humans, corals are host to communities known as microbiomes that are bustling with all different types of bacteria. Some of these miniscule organisms produce antioxidants and vitamins that can help keep their coral hosts healthy.

First, the team looked at the microbiomes of corals that are impervious to SCTLD to try and harvest probiotics from these disease-resistant species. In theory, these could be used to strengthen the microbiomes of susceptible corals.
They tested over 200 strains of bacteria from disease-resistant corals and published a study in 2023 about the probiotic Pseudoalteromonas sp. McH1-7 (or McH1-7 for short). Taken from the great star coral (Montastraea cavernosa), this probiotic produces several antibacterial compounds. Having such a stacked antibacterial toolbox made McH1-7 an ideal candidate to combat a pathogen like SCTLD.
They initially tested McH1-7 on live pieces of M. cavernosa and found that the probiotic reliably prevented the spread of SCTLD in the lab. After these successful lab tests, the wild ocean called next.
The team conducted several field tests on a shallow reef near Fort Lauderdale, focusing on 40 M. cavernosa colonies that showed signs of SCTLD. Some of the corals in these colonies received a paste containing the probiotic McH1-7 that was applied directly to the disease lesions. They treated the other corals with a solution of seawater containing McH1-7 and covered them using weighted plastic bags. The probiotics were administered inside the bag in order to cover the entire coral colony.
'This created a little mini-aquarium that kept the probiotics around each coral colony,' Paul said.
For two and a half years, they monitored the colonies, taking multiple rounds of tissue and mucus samples to see how the corals' microbiomes were changing over time. They found that the McH1-7 probiotic successfully slowed the spread of SCTLD when it was delivered to the entire colony using the bag and solution method. According to the samples, the probiotic was effective without dominating the corals' natural microbes.
While using this probiotic appears to be an effective treatment for SCTLD among the reefs of northern Florida, additional work is needed to see how it could work in other regions. Similar tests on reefs in the Florida Keys have been conducted, with mixed preliminary results, likely due to regional differences in SCTLD.
The team believes that probiotics still could become a crucial tool for combatting SCTLD across the Caribbean, especially as scientists fine tune how to administer them. Importantly, these beneficial bacteria support what corals already do naturally.
'Corals are naturally rich with bacteria and it's not surprising that the bacterial composition is important for their health,' Paul said. 'We're trying to figure out which bacteria can make these vibrant microbiomes even stronger.'

'And yet it is sold in vape stores, in smoke shops, in convenience stores, in gas stations that are popping up around the United States. Are We That Simple? Predicting Human Behavior With AI

A large part of what we're doing with large language models involves looking at human behavior. That might get lost in some conversations about AI, but it's really central to a lot of the work that's being done now. With projects that reckon seriously with the predictive power of LLMS, we can see how predicting human behavior represents what these technologies can do well. But to do that, you have to cut through the noise, and get to the signal. How does that work? Some Modern Efforts Various projects are aimed at this concept right now. For example, there's the Centaur model, built at the Helmholtz Institute for Human-Centered AI. This used Meta's Llama 3.1 and a natural language data set featuring 10 million choices from 60,000 people. which gave the model its food for thought. Centaur got top rankings benchmarked against human psychologists in figuring out behavioral predictions for a human target audience. Closer to Home We also have our own human behavior projects at MIT – and I've been interested in compiling a lot more information about what our people are doing, the kinds of results that they're getting, and the resulting insights. For example, there are efforts made in this direction by researchers like Jacob Andreas and Athul Paul Jacob and Abhishek Gupta. 'To build AI systems that can collaborate effectively with humans, it helps to have a good model of human behavior to start with,' explained Adam Zewe in April of last year, describing related projects. 'But humans tend to behave suboptimally when making decisions. This irrationality, which is especially difficult to model, often boils down to computational constraints. A human can't spend decades thinking about the ideal solution to a single problem.' That's the noise. Zewe continued: 'Researchers at MIT and the University of Washington developed a way to model the behavior of an agent, whether human or machine, that accounts for the unknown computational constraints that may hamper the agent's problem-solving abilities. Their model can automatically infer an agent's computational constraints by seeing just a few traces of their previous actions. The result, an agent's so-called 'inference budget,' can be used to predict that agent's future behavior.' So these 'inference budgets' can be spent in analyzing either a human or a machine… this is ground-breaking stuff that will probably be prominent in the history books when future writers chronicle the rise of AI as a predictive force. Also at MIT, there's the work of full-time AI researcher Rickard Bruel Gabrielsson, who also collaborates with Justin Solomon and others in the MIT community. In an online presentation, Gabrielsson talks about how all of this works. Data tools featuring what people say ends up being noisy input – a much more focused control set, these researchers suggest, might be composed of data about how people use their money and their time, or other action events that speak louder than words. This makes sense to those who understand how AI scans for deep detailed data, and makes in-depth comparisons to drive insights. It's not intuitive – it's data-driven. But it works. As an example, Gabrielsson talked about a project with old movie posters that shows the granular intentions of human users, and other projects involving AI helping to pick out gifts for other people. A teenager, for example, where Gabrielsson invokes the inscrutable nature of the adolescent, or when he asked a model to help brainstorm a gift for his own wife. He described how the LLM tried to look up what a married woman would want – jewelry, etc. – but ultimately suggested a gift card. His wife, he said, wondered why he didn't pick a more personalized gift. So maybe that particular foray did not show off the LLM's capability well. But in general, he explained, this technology is at our fingertips now. In the end, he said, it's all about AI figuring us out in more detailed ways. 'If you want AI to help us and make us better, it needs to know the true story,' he said. 'It cannot just understand the filtered fictions we put online – it needs to understand the unfiltered reality that makes us who we are. It also needs to see the everyday heroes who don't get recognition, how we care for loved ones, and how we do all those boring tasks for them that never (get represented) online. Any intelligence that doesn't understand that will never truly understand us.' So what is this study, really? You could call it behavioral AI. It's the study of human psychology, using predictive tools that rely on technical indicators rather than human intuition. Human intuition is powerful for a lot of things, but it may not be the best at predictive analytics. We have to be humble about that, and keep our minds open, as we continue exploring what LLMs can do.

A household sweetener could hold the potential to create an anti-cancer treatment. New research from Hiroshima University in Japan revealed that stevia leaf extract could help fight pancreatic cancer cells. The leaves of the stevia plant (Stevia rebaudiana) are used to make stevia extract, a naturally sweet substance commonly used as a sugar substitute. Two Cancer Drugs Show Promise In Reversing Alzheimer's Devastating Effects The study, published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, investigated the anti-cancer properties of stevia leaf extract when it is fermented with a certain strain of bacteria. In laboratory research, the fermented extract exhibited "significantly enhanced antioxidant activity and cytotoxicity" against pancreatic cancer cells, the researchers revealed. Oberstein, M.D., medical oncologist and assistant director of the Pancreatic Cancer Center at NYU Langone Perlmutter Cancer Center, shared his thoughts in an interview with Fox News Digital. "As the authors point out, the actual stevia plant does not seem to have any benefit for stopping cancer, so they had to use a chemical process to change the plant and make it stronger with a fermentation process." Oberstein recommended approaching this with caution, as it is unknown whether altering the plant will lead to side effects or toxicity. The study was not performed on humans, so there is "still a lot that's unknown about whether this will help patients," the oncologist added. As stevia extract alone does not have an impact on cancer cells, Oberstein said these findings most likely will not lead to any immediate changes in treatment plans. "The study suggests that if the stevia can be changed in the lab, it may have an impact, so hopefully they will further test this and determine whether this effect happens when tested in people and if it doesn't cause new side effects," he added. "I hope the researchers keep testing this in various formats and in people." Dr. Kristen Arnold, a surgical oncologist and pancreatic cancer specialist at the Orlando Health Cancer Institute, reacted to these study findings in a separate interview with Fox News Digital. "Pancreatic cancer is a very aggressive malignancy," she said. "And we know that even with the most aggressive of therapies, unfortunately, our outcomes are not good." "As a pancreatic cancer community, we spend a lot of time and there's a lot of ongoing effort into trying to find better modalities to treat this disease." Although more research is needed to confirm these preliminary findings, Arnold said she is encouraged by the study.
