Novak Djokovic's X-rated outburst leaves Wimbledon crowd in stunned silence

News.com.au2 days ago
Novak Djokovic launched a foul-mouthed blast as he struggled with conditions on Centre Court against Alex de Minaur late on Monday night (AEST).
The Serb was not at the races as Katie Boulter's fiance easily took the first set 6-1 – the first time Djokovic has ever lost an opening Wimbledon set by that margin.

Djokovic then took an attritional second set 6-4 to level the match, while still appearing to struggle with the wind.
And frustrations boiled over in the third when the seven-time champion placed an easy-looking return well out of play.
He then launched an X-rated rant at the top of his voice in his native Serbian.
The Serb was accused by fans of saying: 'F*** you, f*** you, what a f***ing spin', according to The Sun.

There were audible gasps from the crowd before hushed silence set in with fans on Centre Court – despite probably not being able to understand what he said – being surprised at the sheer volume of his outburst.
One Djokovic fan took to X to say: 'Hahahahahaha I am not feeling well..'
While a detractor posted: 'This is why Djokovic isn't nearly as respected as his peers …'
If the umpire had understood what Djokovic had said, he would have picked up a code violation and been warned for the misdemeanour.
In the event of a second code violation, players are forced to forfeit a point, followed by a game for a third and finally, the match for a fourth.
In a tongue-in-cheek interview in 2023, Djokovic told Eurosport that he was trying to work out new ways of swearing in his own language to avoid falling foul of umpires.
He said: 'The problem we have, because of the success of Croatian and Serbian players in the last 30 years or so, we unfortunately have a situation where most of the umpires understand the swearing words.
'So we have to play around a little bit, we have to use the slang, create new words, but when you're p***ed off you don't think about creating.'
Despite his early troubles, Djokovic saw off his Australian rival 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.

NSW jockey Jean Van Overmeire closing in on personal best season as he prepares for arrival of third child

While some jockeys are winding down as the racing season draws to a close, it's the opposite for the prolific and hardworking Jean Van Overmeire. The 30-year-old is just four wins away from eclipsing his best ever season haul of 104 winners and he's also weeks away from a new addition to his family. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'My wife Jordan is due to have another baby in a few weeks,' Van Overmeire said. 'We've got Savannah who's eight and Hugo's three. 'We don't know the sex of this one so it's all very exciting in the Van Overmeire residence at the moment. 'Life couldn't be better.' On Saturday at Rosehill Gardens, Van Overmeire has a solid book of six rides. The popular jockey has spent the vast majority of the season riding on the provincial and country circuits and his 101 winners has him sitting in fourth place in the NSW jockeys' premiership behind Aaron Bullock (114), Braith Nock (107) and Ash Morgan (102). 'The season's going really well, it's been fantastic,' he said. 'I've probably been slipping under the radar, but things have gone really well this season. 'Being a jockey is very much a success-based job. 'Everything we do flows off riding winners. 'When you're riding winners your confidence builds, you get better opportunities in races, you make better decisions in races and with all that you get better outcomes.' One of those opportunities came a fortnight back at Rosehill Gardens when Van Overmeire did something a handful of the world's best jockeys, like James McDonald, Joao Moreira, Kerrin McEvoy, Craig Williams and Jason Collett, found beyond them – winning aboard Misterkipchoge. 'It's funny, I rode against the horse in the start prior and he powered past me at a rate of knots, really catching my attention, and I remember thinking 'that horse is going to be winning next start',' Van Overmeire said. 'Then luck would have it that I'm riding the horse in his next run. 'I remember being behind the barriers and I could feel him underneath me and I just thought if I can put this horse into a good spot, his last run and the feel he's given me, 'he can't get beat'. 'He flew out of the barriers and straight away we were on the front foot and the rest is history. 'It was just one of those situations where everything fell into place. Good fortune or good management, people will make up their own mind. 'When reflecting it's good to think back and know my Judgement was on point.' That was Van Overmeire's only win for Misterkipchoge's trainer Chris Waller from 17 opportunities in the last five racing seasons and Sydney's premier trainer has given the jockey another chance to make it two wins in a row this Saturday. Van Overmeire will again partner Misterkipchoge in the Toyota Forklifts 3&4YO Benchmark 78 Handicap (1800m). Another drought broken! Misterkipchoge wins his second race, 513 days after his first! Chris Waller take a bow 🙇🙇 @cwallerracing @jeanvovermeire — 7HorseRacing ðŸŽ (@7horseracing) June 28, 2025 'I'm very grateful and happy that Chris is giving me another opportunity on the horse,' Van Overmeire said. 'It looks a bit trickier from the wider barrier (9) this time but that's something I'll discuss with Chris on Saturday. 'One thing I do know is the horse is racing really well and that win last start won't have hurt his confidence.' Misterkipchoge ($6) is the pick of Van Overmeire's Rosehill Gardens engagement which he says; 'Is good book of rides but a bad set of barriers brings us back to the pack.' Based on prices, Vella's Best at $14 is Van Overmeire's next best ride in the Petaluma 3YO Benchmark 72 Handicap (1100m). 'I thought he ran really well behind King's Secret last start,' he said. 'He was forced to do plenty of work early and I thought he stuck to the task well in the straight. 'This time he's drawn more favourably and he will probably strip fitter again on Saturday being his third run back after a 12 month break.'

Lukhan Salakaia-Loto and David Havili to lead AUNZ Invitational XV against Lions

Queensland Reds lock Lukhan Salakaia-Loto and Crusaders centre David Havili will co-captain the AUNZ Invitational XV in Saturday's clash against the British and Irish Lions at Adelaide Oval. In announcing his 23-man squad on Thursday, AUNZ Invitational XV coach Les Kiss said the co-captaincy model would 'really suit this team and what we represent'. Havili was skipper of the Crusaders side that won this year's Super Rugby Pacific title, while Salakaia-Loto has represented the Wallabies 41 times and is a chance to be named in Australia's squad for the upcoming three-Test series against the Lions. Other players with Wallabies experience in the AUNZ squad are hooker Brandon Paenga-Amosa, lock Angus Blyth, flanker Pete Samu, flyhalf Tane Edmed, winger Marika Koroibete and reserve back Jock Campbell. 5 games in...5 to go ðŸ¦ #Lions2025 — British & Irish Lions (@lionsofficial) July 9, 2025 'This week has been building nicely and the boys have put a lot of time into getting to know each other,' Kiss said. Wild twist as Queensland hero gets away ugly Latrell act

Latrell Mitchell has been given no respect after the NSW star's penalty pleas were ignored by officials during Queensland's 24-12 win at Accor Stadium on Wednesday night. Adding insult to injury, the NRL Match Review Committee on Thursday morning announced no charges would be laid after the series decider. It must feel like a slap in the face for Mitchell after he took a hammer blow to his groin during a scuffle with Maroons fullback Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow late in the second half. FOX LEAGUE, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every game of every round in the 2025 NRL Telstra Premiership, LIVE with no ad-breaks during play. New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited-time offer > The incident has been largely overlooked in the aftermath of the Maroons' mighty series comeback where the Blues' star-studded backline was well contained by Queensland's inexperienced outside backs. Queensland coach Billy Slater was criticised for his selection gambles on centres Robert Toia and Gehamat Shibasaki — but the critics have been put in their place. You can watch the incident in the video player above. Mitchell looked the most dangerous player on the field for the Blues, but also found himself out of position in the NSW defensive line on several occasions. On a night where he was given only meagre opportunities to work some magic, the frustrations appear to have got to the Rabbitohs star when he flipped Tabuai-Fidow over while making a try-saving tackle, but gave up a ruck infringement penalty with eight minutes left in the game. The Dolphins No. 1 responded in ugly fashion in lashing out with his right boot straight into Mitchell's tender zone. The Bunnies star grimaced in pain immediately and fell to the floor looking directly at referee Ashley Klein as Tabuai-Fidow got back to his feet to play the ball. The match official ignored Mitchell's complaint and allowed play to continue down the other end of the field. Mitchell was still on the ground as Queensland got within 20m of the try line. Fox League's Warren Smith noted the kick, but stopped short of saying it was a deliberate act. 'There it was. He got one right where you don't want to get one,' Smith said. Queensland legend Cooper Cronk also said Mitchell had to get back and defend his edge rather than stay on the ground. The Match Review Committee clearly agreed. Mitchell was far from the only Blues star on the field struggling to control his frustrations on a night where playmakers Nathan Cleary and Jarome Luai struggled to make an impact. Blues coach Laurie Daley has been criticised over his selections, particularly in the middle of the field. Stefano Utoikamanu — a player controversially picked over the likes of Terrell May and Keaon Koloamatangi — has been singled out after he failed to put his body on the line to stop Harry Grant's burrowing try. Galvanised by Cameron Munster's brave decision to play days after his dad's passing, the Maroons defied the odds to blow NSW off their home ground in Sydney in a blistering first half. Phil Gould was scathing of NSW's attack and the lack of spirit shown by the Blues, saying on Nine post-game: 'Origin is different to club football and it looked like an Origin side playing against a club side.' After the Blues' shocking first half, when they trailed 20-0, Gould said: 'Credit to Queensland, they've played perfect Origin football. 'I can't say the same for NSW in attack. They've looked very predictable. They've looked rushed. There's been no cohesion in defence. They're really disconnected all up and down the field, not just on their goal line. NSW just look so predictable. There's nothing dangerous coming at you and Queensland are really connected. 'They've played perfect Origin football and I don't know what NSW are doing to be honest.' An emotional Cleary told Nine post-game: 'Shattering to be honest. Just wasn't good enough. And at the end of the day, we probably didn't react well enough to their rushing defence. And they saved tries, they scrambled and we struggled to do that.'
