Sports bodies can apply matching grant to organise events
MIRI (April 28): National Sports Council management board member Alan Ling has alerted sports associations to the Sports Matching Grant (GPS).
He said the federal government has allocated RM30 million under the GPS initiative to support sports associations to organise competitions so as to support sports development at the grassroots level.
Ling made this call when he officiated at the recent Bintulu Open Archery Championships at Bintulu Stadium organised by the Bintulu Division Traditional Archery Association.
'This tournament is not only competitive but also able to unearth the talents of archery athletes who have high potential at higher levels including the SEA and Olympic Games,' Ling said.
He added that another RM25 million has been channelled through the Community Sports Fund (DSK) to support healthy recreation programmes involving communities nationwide.
'The total amount of RM55 million reflects the commitment of the federal government in driving the development of sports from the grassroots level to the elite level,' he explained.
Sports associations interested in applying for the grant can refer to their respective district Youth and Sports Offices for more information and application procedures.
Ling, who was representing federal Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh at the event, also presented a cheque worth RM25,000 as a GPS to the organising association. Alan Ling Sports Matching Grant

Rubber Tapper's Son Aims To Stand Proud Alongside Latif Romly
From Farah Najihah Zuraimi JAKARTA, Aug 20 (Bernama) -- Born into a rubber tapper's family in Pauh, Perlis, national deaf athletics athlete Zaiman Megat Abu, 24, has never allowed a life of hardship to be an excuse to stop 'dreaming', but instead uses it as motivation to raise Malaysia's name on the world stage. The youngest of five siblings now carries the big ambition of standing alongside his 'training mate' and national Paralympic champion, Datuk Abdul Latif Romly, with a mission to chase glory at the pinnacle of deaf sports, the Deaflympics Tokyo 2025. bootstrap slideshow Zaiman, who lost his hearing at the age of two after a fall, began to take athletics seriously at 17 when his talent was discovered by coach Sanusi Zainal Abidin, the same individual who once groomed Abdul Latif. 'I have trained once with Abdul Latif. The coach also always says I can be like Abdul Latif. Those are the words I hold on to until today,' he told Bernama ahead of the Southeast Asian (SEA) Deaf Games 2025 in Jakarta, which officially opens tomorrow and runs until next Tuesday (Aug 26). The honour of carrying the Jalur Gemilang (national flag) during the opening ceremony is a symbol of his determination, with a single target — to ensure the gold medal in the triple jump event is brought home as a gift in conjunction with the 68th National Day on Aug 31. Behind the success he is beginning to enjoy, Zaiman always places his family as his source of strength, especially his mother, Maznah Mansor, 65, following the loss of his late father, Megat Abu Mat Saman, who passed away at the age of 64. Meanwhile, his coach Sanusi, 59, who is also a secondary school teacher in Perlis, views Zaiman as an extraordinary figure, as in his 30 years of coaching, this is the first time he has trained a deaf athlete without any foundation in sign language. 'Zaiman comes from a very poor family. He has done all sorts of jobs before becoming a full-time athlete.

Yeoh congratulates Chong Wei on BAM appointment
KUALA LUMPUR: Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh congratulated Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei yesterday on his appointment as Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) council member. She added that his presence in the council was a moment she has looked forward to since she began her term as minister in 2022. "I believe Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei has much to contribute to the development of badminton in Malaysia and he shouldn't just be at the fringes of BAM. "His presence has helped us in the National Sports Council and the Road to Gold (RTG) programme, which I deeply appreciate, but I'm optimistic that when a former athlete leads in a national sports association, it will spur excitement, instill confidence and accuracy in decisions and policies of the association," she posted on Facebook. BAM president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz had previously announced Chong Wei's appointment along with three corporate figures, Employees Provident Fund director Tan Sri Gooi Hoe Soon, former NTV7 chief executive officer Datuk Seri Shazalli Ramly and lawyer Datuk Sunil Abraham, as new BAM council members.
