'Not coming back': Selwyn Cobbo cops massive new blow after Broncos axing
Selwyn Cobbo might be hard-pressed getting back into the Broncos' first-grade team anytime soon after Josiah Karapani bagged a double and looked very strong on Saturday night. Karapani scored two of Brisbane's eight tries as the Broncos bounced back to form with a 44-14 thrashing of the Titans. Starting in place of the axed Cobbo, Karapani had 15 runs for 176 metres, as well as three tackle breaks and two line breaks. The 23-year-old, who'd only played 11 games in first grade before Saturday night, doubled his career try tally and looked every bit an NRL player. He vindicated coach Michael Maguire's decision to bring him in to replace Cobbo, after also getting the nod over regular first-grader Deine Mariner. Cobbo was spotted at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night, and helped the team run through their warmup drills. He appeared to be in good spirits, and reportedly took his demotion well. Maguire explained the decision to dump him to reserve grade on Friday, saying: "As a group, and as a leadership group and as a coach, we're pushing standards here and expectations in how we're doing things, and Karapani's got his opportunity and Selly's got to look at a few things in his game. "(Karapani) has been really consistent in the way he's been playing through the pre -season ... and he's obviously experienced first grade. When he has played, he's played really well. I know he'll do a good job." Maguire refused to divulge on the areas of Cobbo's game he wants to see improved, but said he "definitely" could force his way back into the side. "I'm here to coach the team. We're creating standards and ... the more you meet those, the more opportunities you have," Maguire said. Complicating the situation with Cobbo is the fact he's off-contract at the end of 2025. According to reports, the Broncos haven't tabled him a formal offer and have prioritised the re-signing of centre Kotoni Staggs. With Gehamat Shibasaki and Jesse Arthars proving themselves as genuine first-graders, and Grant Anderson set to join the Broncos from Melbourne in 2026, it's looking increasingly likely that Cobbo will depart. If the Broncos choose to keep Cobbo, it'll likely be a one-year extension that would allow him to chase the riches on offer at expansion teams Perth or PNG from 2027. Unless there's an injury or Reece Walsh is called up for State of Origin duty for Queensland, Cobbo is set for a decent stint in Queensland Cup. One person wrote on social media: "When the media chimed up and slated Madge from dropping Cobbo, you just knew Karapani would salute. He did. Brilliant." Another wrote: "Karapani has got to retain his position after tonight. I like him a lot more than Cobbo on that wing." While a third added: "Cobbo aint coming back into this side anytime soon. Reece Walsh in State of Origin twist as Slater makes decision on Daly Cherry-Evans
Billy Slater is reportedly leaning towards axing Daly Cherry-Evans as Queensland halfback and captain for State of Origin 2, while Reece Walsh made a stunning late push to unseat Kalyn Ponga as fullback. However there were bizarre scenes involving Walsh when the fullback appeared to re-injure his knee in the Broncos' 44-14 win over the Titans on Saturday night. Walsh returned after a six-week absence for the clash at Suncorp Stadium, despite whispers he wasn't quite ready. And the gamble appeared to backfire on coach Michael Maguire when Walsh went down in agony with 10 minutes remaining. The fullback caught a high ball near his line, before pivoting on his troublesome knee and hitting the deck with no-one around him. Walsh grimaced in pain and was hobbling around, but pushed the trainer away who was trying to help him. It looked for sure as though Walsh had re-injured his right knee, ruining any faint hope he had of a State of Origin recall. But he pushed through the pain, and bizarrely scored two tries in the next five minutes. First he burned Chris Randall with a scintillating solo try from a scrum, stepping off his left leg and charging over. He then backed up on the inside after a break from Kotoni Staggs and managed to sprint to the line for the Broncos' eighth try. He didn't appear to be running at full speed, and it remains to be seen whether he's done more damage to his right knee. Another stint on the sidelines would be a hammer blow for the Broncos, and questions will be asked if he made his return too early. Eyebrows were also raised that he was allowed to stay on the field after appearing to aggravate his knee, given the Broncos had already sealed the victory. It was the same situation when he played out the match after suffering the injury the first time in Round 7. His two-try performance would have given Slater plenty to ponder given Ponga hasn't been in the greatest of form. Ponga has probably done enough to retain his spot, and the sight of Walsh hobbling around would have worried Slater no doubt. Walsh no need to be brave. The veteran halfback was poor in the second half against Newcastle on Thursday night, while Tom Dearden has been in much better form. is reporting that Slater is leaning towards picking Dearden at halfback to partner Cameron Munster in Origin 2, and leaving Cherry-Evans out of his 17 altogether. The team will be announced officially on Monday evening, but it appears as though DCE's Origin career is over. Broncos' Courtland Sutton Gets Bad Contract Update originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Broncos drafted Courtland Sutton in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft. The veteran receiver signed an extension with the Broncos in 2021 for four years and $60.8 million. Advertisement Now, the Broncos receiver is entering his eighth year in the NFL and a contract year. He has blossomed into a fringe No. 1 receiver in Denver, coming off his second 1,000 yard season. Sutton has reeled in at least 58 receptions and 770 yards each year since his initial extension. His touchdown production has picked up over the last two seasons as well. After 14 touchdowns in his first five years in the league, Sutton has collected 18 touchdowns in the last two seasons. If Sutton can replicate his 81 catch, 1,081 yard and eight touchdown 2024 season in 2025, he will be due for a massive extension. After all, Tee Higgins just signed a four-year, $115 million extension with the Bengals. Now, some consider Ja'Marr Chase and Higgins as a 1-A and 1-B duo, but Chase is the No. 1 option in Cincinnati. Advertisement Higgins will be paid $28.75 million annually as one of the best No. 2 receivers in the league. If you go down the list of the top-paid receivers in the NFL, Jaylen Waddle comes in at No. 10 earning $28.3 million annually as the No. 2 option, at least for now, in Miami. Sutton is the Broncos' bonafide No. 1 receiver right now, and if he gets paid that way it'll be a steep check for the Broncos to write. Chase set the record this offseason with his massive extension earning $40.3 million annually. Now, Sutton won't get that kind of money, but if you look through the top 10 highest paid receivers, it's an easy assumption Sutton's price range would land north of $25 or $30 million annually. Advertisement Meanwhile, the Broncos are only allocating a base salary of $13.5 million with a cap hit of $20.2 million to their No. 1 receiver in 2025. However, there's another option. The Broncos don't spend the money and rely on their young receivers - on rookie contracts - to step up and develop into that No. 1 role. The Broncos have four young receivers who will have the 2025 season to show the Broncos whether one of them can step into the role Sutton is occupying, or if Denver needs to think harder about extending their No. 1 receiver. Marvin Mims was a second-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft and came on late in 2024, finishing the second half of the season with 446 receiving yards. If you calculate that for a full season, Mims would have reeled in nearly 900 yards in 2024. Advertisement Devaughn Vele had an impressive rookie year in 2024 after being drafted in the seventh round. Vele finished his rookie campaign with 41 receptions for 475 yards and three touchdowns. He also looked impressive at the Broncos OTAs. Troy Franklin is a second-year player as well, drafted by the Broncos in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Franklin's rookie season wasn't as impressive as Vele's, but he has a connection with Bo Nix that can't be understated from their time at Oregon. Franklin also had a very strong performance at the Broncos' OTAs and even earned praise from his head coach. Lastly, the Broncos drafted Pat Bryant in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft. The Illinois product finished his senior year with 54 receptions for 984 yards and 10 touchdowns. Advertisement The Broncos have a lot of young talent at the receiver position and it'll likely be up to them to prove in 2025 that someone can step up to be the No. 1 guy for the future. Denver will also have the contracts of All-Pros Nik Bonitto and Zach Allen up at the end of 2025. The Broncos won't be able to pay everyone, and with the deep, young receiver room, Sutton may be the one they let go.
