Emma Raducanu crashes out at Queen's after 'breaking rule' against Qinwen Zheng

Daily Mirror2 days ago

Emma Raducanu lost in straight sets to Qinwen Zheng as she crashed out of Queen's at the quarter-final stage, having earlier pushed her luck during a break in play
Emma Raducanu's hopes of triumphing at Queen's are over after she was sent packing in straight sets by Qinwen Zheng on Friday afternoon. The new British No.1 needed a medical timeout for a nagging back problem before succumbing to the Olympic champion 6-2 6-4 on the hottest day of the year.
Raducanu lost the first set 6-2, but broke the Chinese twice at the start of the second to take a 3-0 lead. However, the world No.5 fought back impressively, winning six of the next seven games to emerge victorious in one hour and 50 minutes.

All the British players are now out of the singles and world No.37 Raducanu is now 0-6 in quarter-finals in WTA 500 events.

Zheng said: "I played really good today. It was really difficult, she's got more experience than me. I'm proud to be in my first semi-final on grass. I want to apologise for my shoes. I don't know how to run on grass!
"I still don't know when I have to change to grass shoes. I think now is the time because I feel much better to run. I have to keep my game more focused because I started really slow in the second set. Just happy to get the win.
Earlier in the afternoon, Raducanu did something she 'was not meant to do' during the break in play mentioned by Zheng. The Brit was kept waiting by her Chinese opponent in the first set and she pushed her luck with the chair umpire by taking an opportunity to stay sharp.
Zheng led 3-2 and was threatening to break Raducanu's serve, when she halted the match, returned to her seat and changed shoes. Raducanu stood, waited for about a minute, then smashed a practice serve down the court before Zheng had returned to the baseline.
USTA rules state that 'a player should take all warm-up serves before the first serve of the match' - and while chair umpires are given a level of discretion with such incidents, BBC commentator Annabel Croft quickly recognised Raducanu had done something that could have left her in a spot of bother.
She said: "I don't know if Raducanu is meant to hit a ball like that. She's just practiced a serve and normally you're not meant to do that!"

During the mid-match interruption, spectators made their feelings clear, booing and voicing their disapproval as Zheng held up proceedings. The 22-year-old held up a hand of apology before clinching the set 6-2.
Zheng halted the game once more in the third set due to an issue with her racket - a situation which left Raducanu further perplexed. But the top seed ultimately proved too good for the home favourite, winning comfortably to book a final four place.
Nevertheless, Raducanu's run to the last eight has ensured she will be British No.1 once more after the tournament, dropping Katie Boulter down to No.2. Raducanu downplayed the importance of the rankings shift before facing Zheng.
"Tennis is a funny one," she said. "You know, some people lose 250 points one week, some people lose zero, some people lose 100. It's something that happens every single week."

Wales rugby greats sing iconic song together to help famous Welsh club after historic season

Wales rugby greats sing iconic song together to help famous Welsh club after historic season The club are raising funds after a massive promotion A a dozen former Wales and British and Irish Lions players belted out a Beach Boys classic as part of a fundraising effort for London Welsh – and the heartwarming choral rendition has been caught on camera. Mike Phillips, Gareth Edwards, Robert Jones and Gerald Davies were just some of the names in attendance in the English capital as they belted out Sloop John B by the iconic American rock band. 1971 Lions choirmaster John Taylor conducted the rendition of the famous track, with the likes of Scarlets head coach Dwayne Peel and Wales legend Ken Owens also in attendance and singing along. ‌ The event was put on to raise funds for Welsh to invest in their facilities following a landmark season. All former rugby stars, including Sir Ian McGeechan and former England hooker Brian Moore, looked immaculate in their smart clothes, with everyone getting stuck into the song, with arms raised and smiles across the board. ‌ It was held at The Brewery on Chiswell Street, with famous Welsh comedian Rob Brydon a guest speaker on the night. It celebrated the 120th year since the first of more than 50 of the club's players represented the Lions. It's been a joyous season for the iconic club, who recently secured promotion back to the National Leagues after being booted out of the Championship back in 2017. After years of hard work by all those behind the scenes, like former Ospreys star Cai Griffiths, the club have climbed their way back to the upper echelons of English rugby and won the league title in the process. Article continues below Despite their ascent, director of rugby Griffiths assured WalesOnline back in March that the club have no intention of targeting a return to the Premiership, they simply want to retain their players and take it season by season. "We want to target top six next season. And then we will basically build on that. The biggest thing is sustainability," he said. "When you start thinking about Championship, Premiership, you start chasing it, that means stupid decisions: payments and costs spiral out of control. ‌ "For us, we've done well getting into this league, we want to get into that top six and build again the following year, then hopefully we can get more success. "Retaining 90% of the squad (is our goal), it's a key thing. If we do that, then they'll potentially be five players going to 100 caps next season. "These guys are still young. Seeing the areas we do need to bolster up, it's a big league, as in the players are bigger, there's more games. ‌ "You need that strength in depth. The quality is there, even in the second team now. There are a lot of players who have come from the seconds to the firsts. We want to keep on with that pipeline of players." Next season, Welsh will be competing in the National League Two division, which is the fourth tier of English rugby. Join our WalesOnline rugby WhatsApp community here. The project to get promoted was three years in the making, with Griffiths an Co initially focusing on developing young players, and now it's clear that approach has paid off. Article continues below "The group of players that we've got now, we've had them for four, five years. There's a couple of 70-cappers in there which is fantastic and also some players who haven't won anything, so it's fantastic for them to experience that," said Griffiths.

Inter Miami 0 Al Alhy 0: David Beckham watches Messi draw a blank in CWC opener next to Wenger days after knighthood

The Brit icon was congratulated by stars galore before the match BECK AND CALL Inter Miami 0 Al Alhy 0: David Beckham watches Messi draw a blank in CWC opener next to Wenger days after knighthood FORGET the scoreline - this was a knight to remember for Sir David Beckham. Fresh from receiving his knighthood, Becks was back in Miami, nestled into the posh seats alongside Arsene Wenger as his Inter Miami side kicked off the brand-new Club World Cup at Hard Rock Stadium. But here they were, bathed in Florida humidity, facing Egyptian titans Al Ahly in what promised to be a baptism by fire. On the face of it, drawing 0-0 didn't have Becks jumping up for joy. Yet it was a gritty point which proved his side might not be the pushovers many predicted, even if there will be sterner tests to come in the shape of Porto and Brazilian side Palmeiras. Miami have been in freefall in MLS. Al Ahly — 45-time Egyptian champions and backed by a deafening sea of red in the stands — were tipped to cruise. And they nearly did. On 42 minutes, they won a penalty - which showcased the new-fangled ref-cam for the first time - but standout keeper Oscar Ustari guessed right and denied Trezeguet with a brilliant save. It was a huge moment that kept Miami afloat. The tempo lifted and the crowd responded. Concerns over empty seats at the 65,000 capacity stadium were quickly erased — the place was almost at capacity and rocking with 60,927 taking it all in. Al Ahly began to fade, drained by the heat and Miami's late surge. Advertisement Sub Fafa Picault almost grabbed a late winner, another Messi curler grazed the bar in stoppage time before Egyptian keeper Mohamed El Shenawi pulled off an incredible save at the death from Maxi Falcon's close-range header. Becks, suit and booted, looked like he was kicking every ball in the stands, grimacing as he was beamed onto the big screen with the game in the balance. 7 But in the end, a draw for the MLS side and their superstar owner was a decent result. Advertisement FIFA boss Gianni Infantino would also have left Hard Rock Stadium a happy man. Not only was the opening match a lively affair, there was no repeat of the nightmare scenes at last year's Copa America final where Colombian and Argentina fans stormed into the stadium following lengthy delays to enter. FIFA, thankfully, installed a ring of steel around the perimeter to keep everyone safe for the first match of the new 32-team tournament. Miami boss Javier Mascherano said: "We knew we were up against a strong team. Advertisement The nerves and anxiety played a trick on us in the first half,. 'But we had our chances to win. The team left a very good impression. "This is the path forward, playing like this, we can beat anyone.' 7 Inter Miami's participation in the Club World Cup is a dream come true for co-owner David Beckham Credit: REUTERS

Gorka Marquez eyes up two Soccer Aid celebs for next series of Strictly

The dancer is on the lookout for famous faces to join the BBC show and reveals which pair he's tried to sign up Gorka Marquez is using his Soccer Aid debut to recruit celebrities for the next series of Strictly Come Dancing - and has two big names in his sights. The professional dancer takes to the pitch for the charity match tonight at Old Trafford and admits he's being scouting for talent in the process. Tapping up marathon legend Sir Mo Farah, 42, and presenter Big Zuu, 29, Gorka reckons they'd both be perfect additions to the BBC show. 'I should be the new casting director,' laughed Gorka, 34. 'I was saying to Mo Farah he should do it. The nation loves him. He is such a great inspiration for us. So him on Strictly, such a legend, and I think because he has the stamina, he's light on his feet, he'd be brilliant. Big Zuu too. I said to him a few months ago, and today I said it again, 'You would win Strictly,' I said, 'and I'll dance with you.' He's hilarious and he can move. He's very good.' ‌ READ MORE: Soccer Aid stars bonding in unusual way ahead of charity match ‌ Gorka lines up for the World XI FC team tonight as they take on England in the Soccer Aid for UNICEF match. England took the crown last summer and fan favourites including Lioness Jill Scott and singer Tom Grennan will be back as well new signings including boxer Tyson Fury and former England goalkeeper Joe Hart. One Direction star Louis Tomlinson returns as does Manchester United ace Wayne Rooney. Gorka says he won't be shirking from the tough tackles - even with Strictly just one month away. 'Dancers are so robust,' he said. 'We get injured and we carry on dancing, you know? We're used to having injuries and niggles so I will be fine. I mean, I touch wood. No one gets injured. I don't get injured. In a month of time, I'm starting Strictly so I'd hopefully be careful.' Competitive Gorka says he the celebs might be pals off the pitch, but they won't be on it. 'I'm going in,' vowed Gorka. 'We wanna win, you know? We're friends now but there's no friends on Sunday.' Taking no prisoners, Gorka says he won't be afraid to take on his idols. 'For example, if I have to tackle Paul Scholes, I'd tackle him, then I will go, 'I'm so sorry. Big fan!' he laughed. Speaking at the team's training session at Champneys in Tring, Herts, Spanish dancer Gorka said he's was loving being involved and helping a worthwhile cause in the process. 'I just feel like a bit like an imposter syndrome being here,' he admits. 'There are so many people that I admired growing up, professional footballers and celebrities like Steven Bartlett, I listen to his podcast every day. I'm very privileged and it's so for such a great cause, raising money for children so they can have the basic things that we take for granted.' ‌ Dad-of-two Gorka says he could pass for a footballer with his skills and look. 'When I was growing up, I was playing football until I was 14 and then I choose dancing,' he explained. 'A lot of people said I could have been a footballer. They say I look more like one than a dancer because of my tattoos. With dancing, you have to have co coordination. You have to change your rhythms, have speed, stamina, so it pays off on the pitch.' But he says don't bet on him scoring any goals. 'When I'm in front of the goalkeeper, I might have the wrong foot to score, because I'm like a penguin!' laughed Gorka, who says fiancé Gemma Atkinson, 40, and their two children Mia, five, and Thiago, one, will be watching from home. Soccer Aid for UNICEF 2025 will take place on Sunday 15th June at Old Trafford, Manchester and will be shown live exclusively on ITV1, ITVX, STV and STV Player.
