James McClean makes telling admission on Wrexham and Ryan Reynolds' involvement
Wrexham skipper James McClean has lifted the lid on how involved co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney get in running the club. The Hollywood actors have transformed the Welsh side's fortunes since taking over more than four years ago.
The Red Dragons have enjoyed three successive promotions under manager Phil Parkinson, taking them from the National League to the Championship. Former Republic of Ireland international McClean played a key role in their two most recent campaigns in League One and League Two.
And the 36-year-old wing-back has praised Reynolds and McElhenney for resisting the temptation to interfere in playing matters. The pair are heavily involved in supporting the club in other ways, including boosting its profile through the Welcome to Wrexham documentary, providing players with advice and making savvy business deals to increase revenue.
However, McClean believes that leaving key football decisions to Parkinson and his coaching staff has been a masterstroke by the two A-listers. He also spoke in glowing terms about his time at the club to date and how it has helped to prolong his career.
"It's class and I've found a place where I'm appreciated," McClean told the Irish News. "People have got a lot of respect for me and when that's the case, obviously I'll go above and beyond to repay that.
"It has given me a new lease to life, I'm enjoying my football and I feel like I can do this for a long time yet. Rob and Ryan are 100 per cent part of it, but they are very clever men. They are part of it to a certain extent.
"They obviously don't get involved with team affairs, they leave that to the managers, but to have owners involved as they are in the right way, it's class. There are no words to describe the impact that they've had and the praise they deserve, because it's absolutely above and beyond."
Wrexham are currently preparing to play in the Championship for the first time in 43 years. Parkinson has also brought in two new faces to help his side compete in the second tier, with Plymouth striker Ryan Hardie and Leicester goalkeeper Danny Ward joining, and more expected to follow.
While the manager is expected to be well-backed in the transfer market by Reynolds and McElhenney this summer, some pundits have already dismissed Wrexham's chances of pulling off an unprecedented fourth promotion in a row. But McClean was bullish when asked about the club's hopes of reaching the Premier League for the first time ever and warned people not to write them off.
The ex-Sunderland and West Brom player said: "The rise of the club from where it was a few years ago to where it is now is great. We're on a roll at the minute, momentum is like a steam train, the buzz around the place is brilliant.
"From our point of view, it's the same as every year. We'll go into the season with people telling us 'this can't be done' and 'that can't be done' and 'this is a step too far', but with Wrexham it's the old fairytale story and let's see how we get on."
McClean added: "We we told two in a row would have been tough, three in a row would be impossible and four in a row is just non-existent and it won't happen. We've done the previous ones, so I wouldn't put it past us doing the unthinkable."

Will the Principality Stadium roof be open for the Oasis gigs?
Will the Principality Stadium roof be open for the Oasis gigs? Oasis take to the Principality Stadium on Friday, July 4 and Saturday, July 5, but will the roof be open? Will the Principality Stadium roof be open or closed for Oasis? (Image: Huw Evans Picture Agency ) The inaugural night of Oasis Live '25 at Cardiff's Principality Stadium on Friday, July 4, is almost here. Those who've experienced a gig in the Welsh capital, or attended one of its numerous major sporting events, will be familiar with the unique charm of the Principality and its retractable roof. This crucible of Welsh rugby is perfectly suited to closed-roof concerts, with sound ricocheting off the towering metal structure, creating an electrifying atmosphere and a deafening space filled with cheers and song. Conversely the open-air option lends the music a sense of liberation, evoking a summery, festival vibe. Oasis fans will be thrilled to learn that for their opening dates in Cardiff the roof will remain shut, according to the fan guide distributed to Ticketmaster customers. The Principality Stadium will be the place that the famous Gallagher brothers, Noel and Liam, reunite for the first time since the band split. Cardiff is expected to be incredibly busy with thousands of fans and many road closures and you can read everything you need to know about the gig here. There will also be extra trains put on to help fans get home and disruption to bus routes due to the road closures. Gates to the Principality Stadium open at 5pm for both gigs. The first support act announced was Richard Ashcroft, the former lead singer of The Verve and completing the line-up is Scouse band Cast. Cast will begin their set at 6pm, Richard Ashcroft his at 7pm and Oasis are expected to be on stage at 8.15pm. You can read more here. Tickets for the Oasis reunion sold out across all venues due to huge demand when they went online earlier in the year. However, there are still several options available for fans trying to snag a last-minute spot. Limited last-minute tickets can be bought from the official Ticketmaster resale site, where fans who can no longer go can sell their seats, although these tend to go in and out of stock quickly. Article continues below Elsewhere, resale sites like Viagogo, Vivid Seats, StubHub, and Twickets are selling tickets for various dates with prices from £121, although fans should always bear in mind that many official sites, such as Ticketmaster and Live Nation, discourage the purchase of resale tickets.

Liverpool FC will retire Diogo Jota's No20 out of respect and his song will echo on Kop into eternity
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) IT'S always a great sadness to lose a football legend, and truly devastating to see one cut down in their prime. Diogo Jota's untimely death is an incomprehensible shock to the global army of Reds fans who worshipped him. He regularly worked miracles. His final goal for Liverpool confirmed his legendary status: a late winner to push his team closer to that 20th league title. At the Kop end. In a Merseyside derby. Goals don't come much bigger than that. Jota the Slotter's crucial strikes earned him the ultimate badge of honour — his own song from adoring Kopites. Even when on the bench, the crowd would bellow it out to the tune of Creedence Clearwater Revival's hit Bad Moon Rising. 'He's a lad from Portugal; better than Figo, don't you know; Oh, his name is Diogo.' Barely a month ago, I was among a record 1.5million who saw him and his teammates parade the Premier League trophy through Liverpool on an open-top bus. It turned into a harrowing day when a motorist drove into a crowd, injuring 109. 'Profound loss and shock' - Martin Lipton on death of Liverpool star Diogo Jota dies aged 28 in tragic car crash Two weeks after that day of triumph and horror, Jota lifted the UEFA Nations League trophy with Portugal. And only ten days ago he married his sweetheart Rute, mother of his three young children. Our grief as fans cannot begin to compare with the pain felt by the Jota family, who have lost not only Diogo but his younger brother, Andre. We see our heroes as indestructible, and the striker Jota was no exception I'm sure the club and its supporters will ensure they never walk alone. Over decades as a Liverpool fan, I've stood many times in silent tribute to Kop legends - from Bill Shankly and Ron Yeats to Gerard Houllier and Ray Kennedy. No crowd does it better than Anfield. But there will be an added poignancy when Diogo is honoured as he enters the pantheon of lost legends at the age of just 28. I suspect the club will retire the Number 20 he wore as a mark of respect. But his song will echo on the Kop into eternity.
