PERANTIS Aims To Tackle Drop In Women's Political Representation

Barnama24-04-2025

PUTRAJAYA, April 24 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's representation of women in politics has declined to 13.36 per cent in Parliament, prompting calls for more robust policy interventions and leadership development programmes.
Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the issue is not due to a lack of party support, but rather a deeply rooted political culture.
'When I first came in as a Member of Parliament in 2008, there were about 14 per cent of us. Now it is reducing, but this does not mean that the parties did not send enough (female candidates).
'The party did send, but people did not vote for women because that is not a trend that we have in Malaysia. Our trend is to vote for the party. That is why my ministry introduces the Women's Leadership Apprenticeship Programme (PERANTIS) programme, to see more women take up leadership roles in politics,' she said.
Nancy was speaking to reporters after delivering her keynote address at the International Conference for Empowering Women's Inclusive Leadership (ICEWIL) here today.
PERANTIS prioritises the development of women's leadership skills in fields such as the economy, politics, social affairs, law, education, health, safety, welfare and other relevant professional areas.
The initiative was launched with a RM5 million allocation by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on March 8, last year, during the International Women's Day celebration.
According to Nancy, in 2024, 25 recipients were selected for the programme, but only two focused on politics, indicating limited engagement with political leadership among Malaysians.
'That is why we need more leadership programmes like ICEWIL, so that we can expose more young people to what leadership is all about,' she said.

Iran Urges IAEA To Act Against Israel

Iranian Ambassador to Malaysia Valiollah Mohammadi Nasrabadi during the Solidarity Visit to the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Tuesday. By Nur Atiq Maisarah Suhaimi KUALA LUMPUR, June 17 (Bernama) -- Iran has urged the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to take strong actions against Israel's blatant aggression on its territory. Iranian Ambassador to Malaysia Valiollah Mohammadi Nasrabadi said the IAEA should condemn Israel's actions and prevent further violations of international laws. bootstrap slideshow "Israel, as a non-member of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), attacks the country which is a member of the NPT, so the IAEA must have a very strong position against Israel and stop them from this aggression,' he told reporters after meeting some 50 representatives from Malaysian non-governmental organisation during a solidarity visit at the Embassy here, Tuesday. The visit was led by the president of the Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organisations (MAPIM), Mohd Azmi Abdul Hamid. To a question whether Iran will leave the NPT, Valiollah said Iran remains committed to the treaty. Iran has been a signatory to NPT since 1970. Iran on Monday said that the authorities will decide whether to withdraw from the NPT, following IAEA's report that found Iran is in breach of its nuclear obligations for the first time in 20 years. Meanwhile, Azmi said MAPIM will hold a peaceful rally in solidarity with the Iranian people on June 20. The group is expected to march from Masjid Tabung Haji after Friday prayers to the Embassy of the United States where it will submit a memorandum of understanding (MoU) outlining its stance and demands in regards to the escalating conflicts between Israel and Iran. Regional tension has escalated since Friday after Israel launched coordinated air strikes on multiple sites across Iran, including military and nuclear facilities, prompting Tehran to launch retaliatory strikes. -- BERNAMA BERNAMA provides up-to-date authentic and comprehensive news and information which are disseminated via BERNAMA Wires; BERNAMA TV on Astro 502, unifi TV 631 and MYTV 121 channels and BERNAMA Radio on FM93.9 (Klang Valley), FM107.5 (Johor Bahru), FM107.9 (Kota Kinabalu) and FM100.9 (Kuching) frequencies.
