Jerome Bettis discusses Chiefs TE Travis Kelce's return, reflects on Super Bowl XL
"I feel my game is trending right now, so I gotta as good a chance as any to have a better, better showing than last year," said Bettis regarding his training to compete in the American Century Championship. "My goal every year is to try to beat my best finish. I think some years ago, I finished 15th. So, that's my goal: to beat 15th. I've had a productive week, and I'm excited to go out there, spend some time with guys you don't normally get a chance to see, golf with them, and create some new friendships. I'm looking forward to it."
Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce ended speculation at the start of the offseason regarding his future after mulling retirement. He is focused on potentially one more Super Bowl run, and Bettis agrees, but it doesn't require him to put up Pro Bowl numbers.
"So yes, maybe (Travis) Kelce is on his farewell tour, if you call it that. But I promise you, even if he wasn't there, they would still be a quality football team," said Bettis, "Kelce doesn't have to catch eight passes for them to be really good. If he doesn't play well, he'll find other ways to beat you."
Bettis utilized his wisdom and leadership skills over statistics during his final season in the league and carried them through the journey to Super Bowl XL in his hometown of Detroit.
"Yeah. It was different for me because I had never been there before, so I knew it was my last game, but this is why I came back. This is why I stayed. This is why I played the game I played to have an opportunity to win a championship," said Bettis, "The Super Bowl is in my hometown. It's everything I ever wanted. So, it wasn't like a big pressure on my back. It was more of the excitement of the moment. I've been waiting for this my whole career, and it's coming down to this moment. So I was excited about the opportunity."
The Steelers defeated the Seattle Seahawks 21-10, securing Bettis' only Super Bowl title in his Hall of Fame career. He detailed his mindset throughout the moment and encouraged teammates to achieve the ultimate goal.
"So I thought, let's go out, leave it all out here, and see what happens, and if we lose, I could tip my cap to those guys over there and say, hey, great job, and I can lead knowing that I did the best that I could do, and my whole goal when I got to Pittsburgh was to help lead this franchise back to another championship" said Bettis, "So, win, lose, or draw, I would have fulfilled. I thought my obligation as a player, as a leader on this team, is to help get this team back to a championship because that's the standard, and that's, I think, what every player on that team right now should be saying themselves. I helped get us there, and now we gotta go out there and win it so we'll have that moment we're all cherished for a lifetime."
The annual tournament awards $750,000 in prize money, much of which the celebrity players donate to local and national charities. Over the years, nearly $8 million has been donated to non-profit causes. Network television exposure on NBC and a first-place prize of $150,000 make the celebrity tournament one of the most prestigious in the golf world.

Buccaneers land versatile linebacker in PFF's 2021 NFL re-draft
The NFL Draft remains the second-biggest event in the NFL calendar behind the Super Bowl. Like it or not, it remains one of the biggest things fans and media enjoy revisiting to see "what could have been." Pro Football Focus has done a good job this offseason by starting a re-draft series that we have been tracking here on Bucs Wire. In their latest draft, they looked back on, it just so happens to be one of the more impactful ones in recent memory for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers franchise: The 2021 NFL Draft. Coming off a Super Bowl, the roster was expected to compete for another with a returning Tom Brady, Mike Evans, and Lavonte David. Jason Licht went for a home run and selected Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, which did not work out. Fast forward a few years, and the former Washington Husky is now with the Cleveland Browns. Ironically, that team is where we get the alternate pick for the Bucs in this re-draft in Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah. The versatile linebacker would be a dynamic pick for the Bucs, as Trevor Sikkema explains. "The Buccaneers had Devin White with Lavonte David in their linebacker room at the time of this draft, but as we now know, that was not for the long haul. They have since been searching for a long-term answer at linebacker. JOK posted single-season PFF WAR marks of 0.25 in 2023 and 0.25 in 2021, good for sixth best and 12th best at the position. He also earned a 76.0 PFF overall grade in three of his four seasons, as well as a 91.7 PFF run-defense grade in 2024. Owusu-Koramoah is set to miss all of 2025 with a neck injury, which does cloud his projection moving forward." Sadly, Owusu-Koramoah is now dealing with some injuries and is going to miss the 2025 season. He remains one of the more prominent young linebackers in the NFL, and at age 25, he is one of the best at his position.

Buccaneers gain respect in ESPN's latest power rankings
Power rankings are always interesting to see how they can reflect upon your team and others within your division. Following the offseason and part of the preseason, groups are re-evaluating their rosters and projecting them out, incorporating new looks and overhauls based on observations from coaches. The Bucs had one of the better drafts, they had a great offseason, and now some units are really shining in the preseason. Which leads us to ESPN's latest power rankings they published where they have Tampa Bay in the 13 spot. ESPN's Jenna Laine, the Bucs beat reporter, updated their ranking, also provided which player is under the most pressure on the team as they look to win another Super Bowl. Her choice was cornerback Jamel Dean, she writes, "He counts $15 million against the salary cap in 2025 and nearly $16 million in 2026. The Bucs drafted two cornerbacks in Benjamin Morrison and Jacob Parrish in 2025. Dean has struggled to stay on the field due to injuries, missing 18 games in six seasons, including nine in the past two." Ironically, it is those picks she mentioned in Morrison and Parrish who could wind up making the difference between a Super Bowl or not for this team. The secondary was their biggest issue, and in some respects it remains that. If they play to their top potential and Dean meets the moment, this team could outperform their 13th spot in these power rankings.

Texans land top RB prospect Jeremiyah Love in ESPN's 2026 NFL mock draft
The Houston Texans have their franchise quarterback and are known for trading down in the NFL draft, so anytime prospects are mentioned, it's best to do so with a grain of salt, since it's unclear when the team will be on the clock. What's also clear is that, barring a breakout season from Tytus Howard and newcomer Tay Ersery, addressing the offensive line is critical to the future of Houston if it plans on being in the running for more than an AFC South division ESPN's Field Yates went through his first 2026 mock draft and many figured he'd go with the one position Houston has continued to target in the early rounds with the hopes of hitting on: offensive line. Ersery, the Texans' second-round pick, looks like a lock to stay on the left side for the season and beyond, but Howard's role should once again be shifted back inside in a contract year since Houston planned on starting him at right guard. So, who is the pick? Actually, it's Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love, who lands in Houston's lap for Nick Caley to do damage with at pick No. 21. No. 21: RB Jeremiyah Love, Notre Dame With Joe Mixon signed only through 2026, the Texans could use some reinforcements at running back. Next year's class at the position isn't particularly strong, especially in comparison to 2025, but Love is the exception. He has dynamic movement skills -- including unique speed, acceleration and burst -- to go along with real pass-catching ability. He rushed for 6.9 yards per carry last season en route to 1,115 yards and scored a total of 19 touchdowns (17 rushing, two receiving). It's not just that Mixon is signed through next season that alters the path for Houston's ground game. The Pro Bowler has missed the offseason with a foot injury and is now in jeopardy of missing multiple games in the regular season because of the rehabilitation. Nick Chubb has been a serviceable option in the preseason after signing a one-year deal with the Texans back in May. Again, it's a one-year, prove-it deal that could turn into a lucrative contract eslewhere, so it's best to assume the former four-time Pro Bowl runner isn't a part of the Texans' long-term future. Enter Love, who last season nearly guided the Fighting Irish to a national title behind his 17-touchdown season. His 1,115 rushing yards also catapaulted Notre Dame into wins over Georgia and Penn State in the second and third rounds of the playoff while helping the offense finish top 12 in rushing. He'd be a welcome addition to this revamped Texans' offense and may serve as a stepping stone toward a different approach in the personnel that already features Pro Bowl receiver Nico Collins and two rising stars in Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel.
