Jerome Bettis discusses Chiefs TE Travis Kelce's return, reflects on Super Bowl XL

USA Today15 hours ago

This week, Chiefs Wire's Ed Easton Jr. spoke to Pro Football Hall of Famer and Pittsburgh Steelers legend Jerome Bettis about his participation in this year's American Century Championship, which will take place July 9-13 at Edgewood Tahoe, his thoughts on Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce's return and his farewell game in Super Bowl XL.
"I feel my game is trending right now, so I gotta as good a chance as any to have a better, better showing than last year," said Bettis regarding his training to compete in the American Century Championship. "My goal every year is to try to beat my best finish. I think some years ago, I finished 15th. So, that's my goal: to beat 15th. I've had a productive week, and I'm excited to go out there, spend some time with guys you don't normally get a chance to see, golf with them, and create some new friendships. I'm looking forward to it."
Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce ended speculation at the start of the offseason regarding his future after mulling retirement. He is focused on potentially one more Super Bowl run, and Bettis agrees, but it doesn't require him to put up Pro Bowl numbers.
"So yes, maybe (Travis) Kelce is on his farewell tour, if you call it that. But I promise you, even if he wasn't there, they would still be a quality football team," said Bettis, "Kelce doesn't have to catch eight passes for them to be really good. If he doesn't play well, he'll find other ways to beat you."
Bettis utilized his wisdom and leadership skills over statistics during his final season in the league and carried them through the journey to Super Bowl XL in his hometown of Detroit.
"Yeah. It was different for me because I had never been there before, so I knew it was my last game, but this is why I came back. This is why I stayed. This is why I played the game I played to have an opportunity to win a championship," said Bettis, "The Super Bowl is in my hometown. It's everything I ever wanted. So, it wasn't like a big pressure on my back. It was more of the excitement of the moment. I've been waiting for this my whole career, and it's coming down to this moment. So I was excited about the opportunity."
The Steelers defeated the Seattle Seahawks 21-10, securing Bettis' only Super Bowl title in his Hall of Fame career. He detailed his mindset throughout the moment and encouraged teammates to achieve the ultimate goal.
"So I thought, let's go out, leave it all out here, and see what happens, and if we lose, I could tip my cap to those guys over there and say, hey, great job, and I can lead knowing that I did the best that I could do, and my whole goal when I got to Pittsburgh was to help lead this franchise back to another championship" said Bettis, "So, win, lose, or draw, I would have fulfilled. I thought my obligation as a player, as a leader on this team, is to help get this team back to a championship because that's the standard, and that's, I think, what every player on that team right now should be saying themselves. I helped get us there, and now we gotta go out there and win it so we'll have that moment we're all cherished for a lifetime."
The annual tournament awards $750,000 in prize money, much of which the celebrity players donate to local and national charities. Over the years, nearly $8 million has been donated to non-profit causes. Network television exposure on NBC and a first-place prize of $150,000 make the celebrity tournament one of the most prestigious in the golf world.

Former Gators football star Trey Burton inducted into Florida Sports Hall of Fame

The Florida Sports Hall of Fame announced former Florida Gators football star Trey Burton as a member of the 2025 induction class on Friday. Headlined by Super Bowl-winning Tampa Bay Buccaneers Mike Alstott and World Series-winning Florida Marlins manager Jim Leyland, the seven-member 2025 Florida Sports Hall of Fame class will be inducted in a ceremony to be held at the Bradenton Area Convention Center in November. 'We are excited to be able to recognize such a talented and accomplished class who have all contributed tremendously to their respective sports,' said board Chair Keyna Cory. 'Their contributions to their sports and their communities make this a remarkable class. We are honored to welcome them as the newest members of the Florida Sports Hall of Fame.' Burton is the 50th Florida Gator across all sports to enter the Hall of Fame. He was recruited by Urban Meyer as a quarterback but played several positions for the Gators, including wide receiver, tight end and fullback. Burton broke Tim Tebow's team record for touchdowns in a single game with six against the Kentucky Wildcats on Sept. 25, 2010, most coming out of the wildcat formation. After his freshman year, he turned into a versatile threat in a true "athlete" role. He had 720 rushing yards, 976 receiving yards and 20 total touchdowns in 50 career games with Florida. The Philadelphia Eagles signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2014 and won Super Bowl LII with him in 2018. Recent mock draft gives the Eagles the game changer they've been coveting

2026 mock draft gives the Eagles the offensive weapon they keep seeking but never seem to find. Sometimes, the mind wanders to intriguing thoughts. For example, what would it be like to be a fly on the wall in Howie Roseman's office, or to follow the Philadelphia Eagles' general manager for a day? Over time, it has become clear that no matter how much he is analyzed, predicting his next move remains increasingly impossible. We've observed some trends. Regardless of how effectively Philadelphia runs the ball, Roseman and Jeffrey Lurie prefer to see their team throwing long passes and scoring touchdowns. They want the offense to be exciting, but they also appreciate a touch of physicality. This has led to an experiment they have been conducting on and off for several seasons. Remember Tyree Jackson? Sure you do! He was the six-foot-seven, 249-pound quarterback the Eagles worked to turn into a tight end. It didn't work, but every so often, they try to find his upgrade, usually with little to no success. They added Julio Jones and wanted him to be a possession receiver. They tried to develop Noah Togiai. In 2024, they drafted Johnny Wilson, and if ESPN's recent theory is correct, they might revisit an old idea. Eagles land Denzel Boston in an ESPN 2026 NFL mock draft Philadelphia loves A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. They're without question the best wide receiver tandem in the game, but based on recent acquisitions and signings, the Eagles also seem intent on finding two more weapons. They want a speedster who can go deep. They want a big-bodied possession receiver who can serve as a mismatch. ESPN may have the answer. In Matt Miller's 2026 mock draft, they land Washington Huskies star Denzel Boston. He stands at six feet four and tips the scales at 209 pounds. He's two inches shorter than Johnny Wilson and 19 pounds lighter, but Boston has better hands. Miller offers his take: "The Eagles have thrived on finding top-20 players who slip through the cracks. Boston could fit that mold, as the 6-foot-4, 210-pounder had 63 catches, 834 yards, and 9 touchdowns last season. His physical, above-the-rim style is a lot like Tetairoa McMillan's style. Philadelphia has two bona fide star receivers in A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, but there isn't much behind them. With Brown entering his age-28 season, it's worth taking a young receiver like Boston for three-wide sets now and to eventually replace Brown later." Miller's mock, interestingly enough, has Philadelphia picking 31st, one spot ahead of the Buffalo Bills. It sounds like he has the Birds getting back to the Super Bowl and losing vs. Josh Allen and company? Let's return to Boston. We discussed his height, but he has also put significant effort into his resume. Last season, in 16 games, he accumulated 834 yards and scored nine touchdowns while making 63 tackles. He will definitely be a player to watch throughout the season as we begin building the draft board for next April.

Mock draft hints at possible Eagles plan for life after Dallas Goedert

This could be Dallas Goedert's swan song in Philly, and a recent mock draft believes it has found a worthy successor. Here's some radical honesty. It was cool to see the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Goedert find some common ground. One of the offseason's biggest stories involved him being allowed to seek a trade partner and initiate his exit. In the end, a deal was reached, allowing him to stay with the only NFL team he has ever known for one more season. The starting quarterback reportedly made his case, highlighting his value to the organization to the tight end. This situation serves as a reminder that, despite the emphasis on the business side of football, there are still moments that emphasize bonds, connections, and familiarity. Unfortunately, it appears that there is an anticipated conclusion here. Goedert is in the final year of his contract, and unless there are any unexpected developments, this will likely be his last season with the team. Philadelphia needs to consider a succession plan, and a recent mock draft for 2026 attempted to address this issue. Ladies and gentlemen, meet Max Klare It appears that Pro Football Network is forecasting a Super Bowl rematch featuring the Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs. It also seems that they have Philadelphia winning. Their recent 2026 mock draft has the Chiefs selecting cornerback Will Lee III at No. 31, while the Birds wrap the first round with the final selection one spot later. The Ohio State Buckeyes' tight end, Max Klare, is the 32nd overall pick for Philadelphia. He stands six feet four inches tall and weighs 240 pounds, making him two inches shorter and twelve pounds heavier than Johnny Wilson. Recently, Pro Football Network (PFN) shared insights on this selection, and a month ago, Pro Football Focus conducted a detailed analysis of Klare. "Dallas Goedert's future in Philadelphia is uncertain, and this draft could provide them with a younger solution. After transferring from Purdue to Ohio State, Max Klare will get the chance to prove his dominance with a championship contender. He compares favorably to another former Philadelphia Eagles tight end: Zach Ertz." Other options for Philadelphia in Round 1 next season include planning for a successor to Lane Johnson, acquiring a third wide receiver, and possibly selecting an outside cornerback if Kelee Ringo and Adoree' Jackson do not meet expectations. While we are far from engaging in serious discussions about these possibilities, training camp hasn't officially started yet. However, it's certain that Philadelphia's scouts are already compiling a draft board.
