Golf: Ryan Fox misses rich Tour Championship

New Zealand golfer Ryan Fox. Photo: Matthew Maxey/Icon Sportswire / PHOTOSPORT Auckland golfer Ryan Fox has missed out on a maiden appearance in the lucrative PGA Tour Championship. Fox finished 43rd in the second FedEx Cup play-off tournament, the BMW Championship in Maryland. He finished with his best round of the week, a one-under par 69, which left him 12-over for the tournament and 27 shots from the winner. World number one Scottie Scheffler reeled in overnight leader Robert MacIntyre of Scotland to win. Scheffler began the final day four shots behind, but was in front by the seventh hole and finished two clear. It was Scheffler's 18th Tour win and fifth of the season (becoming the first player since Tiger Woods in 2006 and 2007 to record five or more wins in consecutive years). Fox started the tournament needing a top finish to make the exclusive 30-player field for the $68 million Tour Championship this week. He was ranked 34th, but his projected standing is now 43rd. Fox has had an impressive season with two victories, while his place in the BMW Championship for the top 50 players ensures he can play every PGA tournament next year. The 38-year-old won the Myrtle Beach Classic and the Canadian Open in 2025. Tuataras champions after upset win

Never write off a champion team. The Taieri Tuataras crashed the Albany Alligators' party, retaining the Otago premier men's club title with a 1-0 win that was reminiscent of the 1998 Super Rugby final. There was a huge crowd at the McMillan Centre, and while Albany had more supporters, it was Taieri's finals experience that really shone through. The game itself was a bit of a non-event. Albany were in control, dominating the first half, with Taieri failing to even register a shot in anger. That said, Issac Hallam was not overly busy, with the Tuataras' conservative strategy keeping the game in check. It seemed right throughout if there was to be a winner, it would come from Albany — but that was not what transpired. The Tuataras immediately shot out of the blocks, had their first effort on goal at the start of the second half, and continued to get themselves further up the field. Midway through the third quarter, Jarrod Casey fired home the goal of his life over the shoulder of keeper Michael Lobb, but it was disallowed as officials deemed it was shot from outside the circle. Replays showed that may not have been correct, but Taieri had to get on with the job. Into the final quarter, the game was on a knife edge, and eventually, with eight minutes to go, the decisive moment arrived. A hopeful ball was slapped down-field, and after an unfortunate deflection, it sat up for Oliver Battrick, who calmly rounded Lobb with his first touch, before smashing it home into an empty net. The crowd was absolutely silent — which was a little bizarre, but the defending champions did not care. It was now or never for Albany, but there was no way past Hallam, who put in his performance of the season. Taieri saw the game out, and were crowned champions again. This title felt extra special for many of the Taieri players, simply for the reason it was not expected. Their young side was written off, but they did the job. Best on the day for the Tuataras was Casey, who was a man possessed in the middle of the park. Zeke Buschl and Baxter Meder were also very good, as well as keeper Hallam. For Albany, in the losing effort, Lachie Crowle was very strong, putting out fires at the back right throughout. Hamish Davenport was also an ever-present threat. They say you have to lose one to win one, so expect Albany to be back with vengeance next year. — Nicholas Friedlander

Coach Scott Robertson surprised to hear All Blacks top world rankings

All Blacks coach Scott Robertson has praised his side's performance in Cordoba this morning, after they overcame both the Pumas and their own mistakes to come away with an ultimately comfortable 41-22 win . "It was a great test match, with a great atmosphere," he said at the post-match press conference. "31-10 at halftime, we let them back in by not having the discipline that's required. "There's a lot of efforts we can look back on and areas we can improve." The big halftime lead was built on some clinical work in the first 40 minutes, but several entries into the 22 were blown by simple handling errors and miscommunication. The second half saw the inaccuracy spread to the other side of the ball, with defensive lapses allowing the home side to score two tries and come within seven points of the lead. The result also means the All Blacks are now the top-ranked side in the World Rugby rankings, thanks to the Wallabies' upset win over the Springboks in Johannesburg this morning, but Robertson and the All Blacks were unaware of that fact, when it was put to them in the press conference. "It's actually something we just learned, because you just told us, he said. "Look, it shows how tough test footy is and the margins. "Argentina were great tonight and defended really, really well, and were passionate - just like the Springboks were too." The two-time reigning world champions led 22-0 after only 20 minutes, before the Wallabies scores 38 unanswered points. "A moment, discipline, a card, great play, two or three tries back to back can turn test matches," Robertson said. "We're pleased we're No.1, but our sights are settled on next week's match, rather than rankings." Robertson added there was plenty to improve on. "You're never satisfied as an All Black, because there's always room to improve," he said. "The exciting part is we did so much good stuff." Just what next weekend's clash in Buenos Aires will entail is very interesting in terms of selection. Tamaiti Williams and Wallace Sititi have been flagged as available, and while Williams will likely go straight back into the front row, Sititi's path may well be off the bench, thanks to another very tidy performance at blindside by Tupou Vaa'i. Some form-based selections will be considered too, with several squad members yet to debut. The two sides meet again next Sunday morning NZT.
