Nine-time national champion Jinesh Nanal conferred with Maharashtra's top sports award

Indian Express03-05-2025
Twenty-year-old Jinesh Nanal, who ranks first in India and eighth globally in Inline Freestyle Skating, has added another feather to his cap by receiving Maharashtra's highest sporting honour, the prestigious Shiv Chhatrapati State Sports Award 2023-24. The award, presented at Balewadi stadium recently, recognises Nanal's journey from a four-year-old attending skating classes to a nine-time national champion who recently clinched silver and bronze medals at the World Games Series in Hong Kong.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Jinesh said, 'When I was four years old, my grandmother used to take me to skating classes as an extra-curricular activity. But gradually my interest evolved, and I started training professionally by the age of 11. Since the beginning, I have been training under coach Ashutosh Jagtap and uncle Dr Iqbal Sayed at the Maharashtra Mandal in Mukundnagar.'
'A typical day comprises around six hours of training, which includes off-skate exercise of two hours, and the rest time is spent in studies and rest. While on weekends, the training time increases. I've always taken care of my diet and made consistent efforts even on days when I had no motivation to train, which has been well-rewarding. The success so far is because my family, friends, sponsors and the government, who have always been supportive in aiding my preparation for this lesser-known sport in India,' said Nanal.
Considering the high-pressure situations, nervousness and the fear of failure during competitions, Nanal emphasises believing in one's training and hard work they have put in. 'By meditating, I take care of my mindfulness and by considering any competition as a normal routine test without taking any stress, it has helped me win major competitions,' he said.
However, Jinesh highlights the lack of sports infrastructure in the country. 'Despite being a metropolitan city, Pune still does not have wooden surface skating courts that are used at the World Games. If the government focuses and invests in the sports infrastructure, we can train and be well prepared to compete at a global level. Also, by helping budding sportspersons financially and with sports equipment, India may see a rise in the hidden potential,' said Jinesh.
Considering Inline Freestyle Skating, Jinesh currently ranks first in India and eighth in global rankings and has won the national championship titles nine times in a row. Recently, he has won a silver and a bronze medal at the World Games Series 2024 held in Hong Kong, held under the International Olympic Committee and will be representing the country at the upcoming World Games in China, which is to be held in August.
Along with his excellence in sports, Jinesh has been equally good in academics. 'Jinesh is currently studying in the third year of Computer Engineering at the MIT World Peace University, Kothrud. Over the years, he has managed his studies well, balancing his love for sports and now aspires to win at the upcoming World Games,' said Sheetal Nanal, Jinesh's mother, who is a practising doctor.

India vs England 5th Test Playing 11: Massive changes in both sides for the Oval Test today

India 5th Test Match Predicted Playing 11 vs England, Full Squad: India will be looking to avoid a series defeat at the Oval as they go into the fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy trailing 2-1. They have momentum with them, having drawn the fourth Test against all odds. However, they may have to get used to the fact that they are likely to be without two of their most consistent players of the past five years with Rishabh Pant injured and Jasprit Bumrah set to sit out. Captain Shubman Gill didn't make any clear suggestions as to whether Bumrah will play the fifth Test or not in his press conference on the eve of Day 1. However, it is certain that the Indian team sticks to its decision of only playing their pace spearhead for three Tests, it could mean that they could potentially have to make two changes in their fast bowling lineup. A report from Sandeep Dwivedi, The Indian Express' man on the ground in London for the Oval Test, mentioned the changes that India are likely to make for the fifth Test: Karun Nair to replace Shardul Thakur; Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah miss out. Gill said that Akash Deep is fit to play and so he becomes the obvious replacement for Bumrah. Meanwhile, Anshul Kamboj made a rather forgettable start to his Test career so it is likely that he will make way. Gill said that India asked Arshdeep Singh to get ready, while cushioning that statement up by saying that a final call on the playing eleven will be taken only after they take a look at the pitch later in the day. Pant's obvious replacement is Dhruv Jurel, who will finally get to bat in the series after filling in behind the stumps for most of the last two Tests. It also means that India will be reluctant to let to go of any kind of batting depth. Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja — after their gritty centuries they scored to power India's fight at Old Trafford — are obviously set to remain in the team. India predicted XI: Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill (c), Karun Nair, Dhruv Jurel (wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep, Prasidh Krishna England (announced XI): Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope (c), Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jacob Bethell, Jamie Smith (wk), Chris Woakes, Jamie Overton, Josh Tongue Squads: India: Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill(c), Dhruv Jurel(w), Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Anshul Kamboj, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Karun Nair, Kuldeep Yadav, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Prasidh Krishna, N Jagadeesan, Arshdeep Singh, Akash Deep England: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope(c), Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jacob Bethell, Jamie Smith(w), Chris Woakes, Gus Atkinson, Jamie Overton, Josh Tongue, Liam Dawson, Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer

India Claims England Getting Preferential Treatment When Picking Match Balls: 'When We Asked For...'

Last Updated: As per a report, an Indian cricket team official claims that England are being given a preferential treatment in choosing match balls. England have been given the first choice to pick match balls on several occasions as a report claims that the hosts are receiving preferential treatment on their ongoing Test series with India. Indian officials want a relook at the protocol followed to pick balls for a Test match with the red cherry continuing to be the center of attention even as the series enters its final phase. According to a report in The Indian Express, among the match balls that have been presented to both the teams in the dressing room ahead of the start of plat, is one which has a darker shade of red with others being pure red. It's claimed that the darker shade swings more compared to others and on occasions, when the Indian team has asked for it, they were informed that England have already chosen it as their second new ball. 'I am not alleging anything but when we asked for the darker ball, we were told that was the ball England had selected as their second new ball," the official was quoted as saying. As per the practice, it's the fourth umpire, from the host country, who oversees the ball selection process and carries the box to the dressing rooms. The official indicates that the absence of a neutral judge (match referee) means the whole process can be bent to suit the home team. 'The match referee, the neutral chief judge of the Test, is not present," said the official. 'The right thing would be to have this ball selection in the match referee's room and not in the dressing room with the local umpire as the only official present," he added. Duke Balls Under Scrutiny India have on multiple occasions asked for the ball to be changed complaining it's going soft too early and losing shape. The manufacturer of the Dukes ball – the brand of ball being used in the Test series – has defended the quality claiming if the balls were made harder, it will result in broken fingers and backs. view comments First Published: July 31, 2025, 09:51 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Another Lifeline For Karun Nair? Big Changes For 5th Test As India Set To Drop...

Last Updated: India plan to bolster their batting for the final Test against England at The Oval with Karun Nair expected to make his return. India are reportedly turning to a similar team combination that gave them their solitary Test win of the ongoing England tour at Edgbaston earlier this month. The Shubman Gill-led side is trailing 1-2 in the five-match series with the final contest set to be played at The Oval from Thursday (July 31). According to a report in The Indian Express, Karun Nair is set to return to the playing XI after being benched for the Manchester Test which ended in a draw. The top-order batter has been struggling to convert his starts after making his Test return in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The report states that India are looking to strengthen their batting order for the series-decider which they must win to ensure parity. With the pitch at The Oval having a layer of grass on the match eve, the team management could add an extra batter in Nair. Shardul To Be Dropped? If Nair gets a look in, allrounder Shardul Thakur will likely get the axe due to his unimpressive bowling in the 4th Test. Nair has scored 131 runs from six innings on the tour so far while averaging 21.83 with a best of 40. The fifth Test could be another lifeline for him to keep his place in the Test squad. Nair made his much-awaited India return during the 2nd Test, replacing B Sai Sudharsan who was consigned to the bench after an unremarkable debut in Leeds. However, this time around, both are expected to keep their spots. Should the fifth Test be played on a green pitch, left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav may have to return to India without playing a single game on the tour. India have not ruled out Jasprit Bumrah's inclusion for the fifth Test despite him already playing three matches as per his workload plan. Should he sit out, Akash Deep could make his return alongside Prasidh Krishna, the report states. In that scenario, left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh will have to wait longer for his Test debut. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
