Baha Targets World Cup After Morocco Lift Historic U17 AFCON Trophy
Morocco U17 head coach Nabil Baha hailed a 'historic' triumph after his side edged Mali on penalties to win the U17 Africa Cup of Nations.
Speaking in his post-match press conference, Baha thanked the Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), his staff, national team boss Walid Regragui, and his family for their unwavering support.
'I'm proud of the boys, proud of this title,' said Baha. 'The Federation backed us all the way. My family—my wife and kids—stood by me through everything.'
Baha, who is in his first major coaching role, called the title a dream start. His son scored Morocco's opening penalty in the shootout.
'As a coach and a father, this is massive,' he said. 'I saw a video of one of the players' dads praying during the shootout. I thought he was praying for his son, but it turned out he was praying for mine – Ziyad. That's the kind of unity we've built in this squad.'
Baha never doubted his players despite the fatigue and pressure of a final. He praised goalkeeper Chouaib Belaârouche for his composure and crucial saves throughout the tournament.
'We always believed. I knew we had the edge on penalties with Chouaib in goal,' said Baha.
The Morocco coach expects more from this team. He plans a short celebration before shifting focus to the U17 World Cup.
'We'll enjoy this for a week, then we prepare for the World Cup. This squad has ambition. We want to go far,' he said.
Baha also praised the overall level of the competition.
'We faced tough sides—Ivory Coast, South Africa. African football keeps growing,' he said. 'Why not see three African teams in a World Cup semi-final one day?'
He ended with a message to the fans: 'This win belongs to you. Every family, every city—you all played a part. Thank you. This is your trophy too.'
The Atlas Cubs qualified for the U17 FIFA World Cup after progressing to the quarter-finals of the AFCON, alongside Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Egypt, Mali, Senegal, South Africa, Tunisia, Uganda, and Zambia.
The tournament will feature 48 teams for the first time and will be held in Qatar from November 3-27. Tags: Moroccou17 afconU17 MoroccoU17 world cup

Franco Mastantuono: The Argentine Wonderkid Pitching PSG against Real Madrid
River Plate's midfielder Franco Mastantuono has become one of South America's most closely watched prospects, drawing interest from European giants Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain. Real Madrid's chief scout, Juni Calafat, travelled to Buenos Aires this week for discussions with River Plate executives and Mastantuono's entourage, with Los Blancos prepared to activate his $45 million release clause. Madrid's plan would allow the Argentine to remain at River Plate until the end of the year, as they did in 2023 with the Arda Güler transfer saga. The 17-year-old midfielder, who has scored 7 goals and 4 assists in 19 appearances this season, has also received his first call-up to the Argentina squad for World Cup qualifying fixtures in June. Meanwhile, reliable sports journalist Fabrizio Romano reports that PSG is also pushing to secure Mastantuono's signature. PSG believes it can leverage its recent European success to convince the young midfielder who has expressed a preference for the French club. Mastantuono was born in Azul, Buenos Aires Province. He signed his first professional contract with River Plate in August 2023, which included a €45 million release clause. River Plate's youth manager Martín Pellegrino has praised Mastantuono's left-footed versatility: 'He can operate as a forward, an 'enganche' or a playmaker.' Assistant coach Pablo Fernández also said: 'His prowess in one-on-one situations and dead-ball scenarios. Mastantuono cites Julián Álvarez, Phil Foden, and Neymar as inspirations for his dynamic, free-flowing style.' As both Real Madrid and PSG seek his signature, Mastantuono seems destined to follow in the footsteps of Julian Alvarez, Diego Maradona, Carlos Tevez, and Sergio Agüero, potentially securing a high-profile move to Europe in January 2026. Brahim Diaz Out, Amine Zahzouh Gets First Morocco Call-Up
Real Madrid midfielder Brahim Diaz has been ruled out of Morocco's upcoming friendlies against Tunisia and Benin with a muscle injury. Morocco team doctor Christophe Baudot confirmed the news on Tuesday, saying Diaz is continuing treatment at the Mohammed VI Football Complex. 'He won't be ready in time for the Tunisia match,' said Baudot. 'We'll assess his progress ahead of the second game.' Diaz started Madrid's final league match against Real Sociedad but was forced off in the 55th minute. His absence is a blow for Walid Regragui, who is already dealing with several injuries in the squad. Nayef Aguerd, Noussair Mazraoui, Ghanem Saïss and Chemsdine Talbi are all unavailable, while Abdessamad Ezzalzouli remains a doubt. In response, Regragui has handed a first senior call-up to FAR Rabat midfielder Amine Zahzouh, one of the standout players in Morocco's top flight this season. Zahzouh scored 11 goals and provided 13 assists in 43 appearances, finishing the campaign as the Botola Pro's top playmaker. The 23-year-old was already training with Morocco's local-based national team at Maâmora and joined the senior squad for Tuesday's session. Morocco are preparing for two friendlies in Fez against Tunisia on June 6, and Benin on June 9. The matches are part of the build-up to next year's Africa Cup of Nations on home soil. Despite the growing injury list, the camp remains in high spirits. Tuesday's session included a guard of honour for players who won silverware with their clubs this season. Morocco Fans Left Fuming Over Ticket Prices for Tunisia Friendly
A group of Morocco supporters has hit out at the rising cost of tickets for the national team's upcoming friendly against Tunisia in Fez. The RossoVerdi ultras, known for backing the Atlas Lions home and away, said the unexpected price hike, especially in the popular curva sections, has priced out many loyal fans. They've urged the authorities to reconsider ahead of Monday's friendly against Benin at the same stadium. Anger has also spilled over on social media. Fans say tickets vanished quickly from official platforms, only to reappear in the black market at more than triple the original price. The Moroccan Football Federation has confirmed that Friday's match against Tunisia will be played behind closed doors, with all tickets now sold out. Tickets for the Benin match will go on sale from Wednesday. Fans can get them via the Webook website or app, with entry to the stadium available directly through digital passes. No need to print or collect anything. Prices for the Morocco-Benin game are as follows: VIP: MAD 600 Category 1: MAD 150 Category 2: MAD 100 Category 3: MAD 70 The organisers say the new system is designed to make entry easier and ensure matches are run smoothly, especially as the team gears up for major competitions later this year.
