Six injured after SUV crashes into Amish buggy in Southwest Michigan
The crash happened about 7:45 p.m. Friday along County Road 388 in Van Buren County's Bloomingdale Township. The Van Buren County Sheriff's Office reported the buggy was westbound on County Road 388 when it was struck from behind by the SUV.
Multiple ambulances were called to the scene to assist the injured. Injuries were reported as serious to four of the buggy riders, and critical to another.
The driver of the SUV was arrested on a charge of operating while intoxicated causing serious injury and taken to the Van Buren County Jail.
"It appeared that speed and alcohol were both factors in the crash," the report said.
County Road 388 was closed for about four hours in the immediate aftermath of the crash.
First responders assisting deputies on scene included Bloomingdale Fire, Columbia Fire, LIFE EMS and Van Buren EMS.

LOWELL, Mich. (WOOD) — A West Michigan school librarian is suing a parent who she says harassed her for years over the library's catalog. 'The accusations that have been made against me are not even decent. They're absolutely horrific things that people have said,' Christine Beachler told News 8. Beachler, the library media director for Lowell Area Schools, said she has found herself in the national spotlight after Stefanie Boone, a parent of a Lowell student, launched an alleged smear campaign against her. Spring Lake board votes to remove book on sexuality from high school library In her civil lawsuit, Beachler claims Boone has posted countless social media texts and videos over the past five years calling Beachler a 'smut-peddling media specialist,' 'groomer' and 'pedophile.' 'They're accusing me of criminal activity. They're making accusations that I am abusing children. And that's not right,' she said. The alleged attacks started after Boone, a member of the conservative group Moms for Liberty, appealed library books that contained LGBTQ+ themes. 'Rather than sexually grooming our children in school, how about we groom them to be upstanding citizens who are accountable, responsible, respectful,' Boone said during a board of education meeting last academic year. 'Gone are the days of denying the existence of sexually explicit material in our schools.' Local school board races become theater for national culture wars Beachler told News 8 that the district has more than 75,000 books spread across its six libraries. Of those, only two have been flagged in the past five years for mature content. A special committee and the school board read the two books entirely and opted to retain the titles in the school's collections. 'It's important to remember that library books are optional. These are not required materials. These are not curriculum materials,' Beachler said. Additionally, Beachler told News 8 that Lowell Area Schools offers parents an option of restricting specific books and genres their kids can access. 'I understand that they do have the right to control what their children read. But what some of them are forgetting is that they don't have the right to control what other students read,' she added. 'I have been confronted a few times out in the community and so I really don't go many places in the community anymore,' Beachler said. Driver killed after flipping car on Highway 680 offramp in Pleasant Hill
A man died after his vehicle crashed and overturned on an off-ramp from northbound Interstate Highway 680 in Pleasant Hill on Tuesday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol. The crash was reported at 8:14 a.m. on the Monument Boulevard off-ramp from northbound Highway 680. Investigators determined a man was driving a silver Lexus SUV in the slow lane on the highway when he veered right toward the off-ramp, then lost control of the vehicle as it went up an embankment and overturned, CHP officials said. The man was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. Authorities determined he was not wearing his seatbelt during the crash. His name was not immediately available. The off-ramp was closed for a little more than two hours following the crash. Former Detroit Riverfront Conservancy CFO denied request for more time before reporting to jail
The former CFO of the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy, who was sentenced for embezzling $40 million, was denied a request to extend his time out of jail before surrendering. U.S. District Court Judge Susan DeClercq denied William Smith's request on Monday, requiring him to report to jail on Tuesday. Court documents showed that Smith cited medical treatment as the reason behind the request. However, DeClercq wrote that the court had already extended Smith's report date by 60 days to receive treatment. Smith was sentenced in April 2025 to 19 years in prison, followed by three years' supervised release. He pleaded guilty in November 2024 to one count of wire fraud and one count of money laundering. As part of his plea agreement, he agreed to pay at least $44.3 million in restitution. Smith served as the Conservancy's CFO from 2011 until he was fired in May amid an FBI investigation. Federal prosecutors previously said Smith used the money "to live a deeply immoderate lifestyle," including purchasing real estate, clothes, jewelry, and a 35-foot boat and leasing a $200,000 Mercedes-Benz. Court records showed that Smith wire-transferred some of the money into multiple accounts he owned. The money funded multiple trips, including a yacht for a Mediterranean cruise and a private jet to travel to Las Vegas, according to prosecutors. Smith also leased a Maserati for a woman he was romantically involved with and sent her $3.7 million. Additionally, he attended a Detroit Lions game at the Los Angeles Rams' SoFi Stadium, renting a private suite for $29,000, according to court documents. Matthew Cullen, chairman of the Conservancy, said, "From the moment the Board discovered his complex embezzlement scheme, the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy team promised to assist in Smith's prosecution; to reorganize and reform its internal operations; and to push forward with its plans to create the world's most dynamic and inclusive Riverwalk – 5.5 miles of perpetual public access along the Detroit River." In a statement, Matthew Schneider, attorney for the Conservancy, said, "William Smith is where he belongs – in prison.
