
Can I trust my sunscreen? Choice test results have created uncertainty over SPF claims and lab testing process
With Australia having one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, the Choice report left many worried and wondering: can I trust my sunscreen to protect me?
Even four Cancer Council branded sunscreens were flagged in the report: its Ultra Sunscreen SPF 50+ was found by Choice to have a sun protection factor of 24. The worst result, though, belonged to Ultra Violette's Lean Screen SPF 50+, which Choice's testing found had an SPF of just 4.
While some brands have fiercely disputed the findings, the investigation has prompted debate over the reliability of sunscreen testing, as well as questions over the way these products are regulated.
What's going on?
Australians love spending time in the sun and sun safety is instilled in people from a young age.
So the Choice investigation, with its results published in June, created a storm. Choice tested 20 popular SPF 50 or 50+ sunscreens from a range of retailers and prices in a specialised, accredited laboratory and found 16 of them did not meet their SPF claims.
No surprise, the Choice results have been contentious.
Choice has said it handed over its findings to the companies before they were released publicly. Some have produced test certificates showing that their product met the claimed SPF using the same testing method that Choice used.
When contacted by Guardian Australia, the brands stood firmly by their SPF claims and said they test their products in accordance with the regulations. The Cancer Council said it stood by its previous results but, out of an abundance of caution, has submitted their four products that Choice reviewed for additional testing.

Ultra Violette, the sunscreen brand that had by far the worst-performing product according to Choice's testing, has fiercely disputed the findings. The Ultra Violette Lean Screen SPF 50 plus Mattifying Zinc Skin Screen, a higher-end product that retails for upwards of $50, returned a result of just 4 in Choice's test. A second test returned a result of 5, Choice said.
Ultra Violette has disputed Choice's findings very strongly and very publicly. It has taken the step of speaking directly to consumers via social media. One of the brand's co-founders, Ava Chandler-Matthews, posted a video on Instagram in which she strongly disputed Choice's methodology. In response, Choice has defended the rigour of its testing.
The SPF or sun protection factor rating of a sunscreen measures how well it protects the skin from sunburn by indicating how much ultraviolet radiation can still penetrate the skin through the product when applied properly. For example, SPF 30 is estimated to filter 96.7% of UVB radiation, whereas SPF 50 is estimated to filter 98%.
Dr DJ Kim, a senior lecturer at the University of New South Wales' school of chemistry, says the difference between SPF 30 and SPF 50 is actually 'very marginal'.
Kim says SPF ratings are given by timing how long it takes skin to burn with and without the sunscreen.
'Let's say that you took 300 seconds for your skin to burn with sunscreen, and then if … it took 10 seconds to burn without the sunscreen, then 300 divided by 10, that becomes SPF 30,' he says. 'So, it's not the most scientific method to measure the SPF factor, honestly.'
SPF claims in Australia are regulated by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).
Sunscreen brands must get approval from the TGA to sell their products to Australian consumers. To do this, they undertake SPF testing in accordance with the Australian/New Zealand standard in an approved laboratory.
The accepted method is to test sunscreen on human skin. The methodology involves putting the sunscreen on 10 volunteers who are exposed to artificial solar UV radiation. This is the method Choice says it used, working with an accredited laboratory that specialises in sunscreen testing.
Sunscreen brands submit their results to the TGA for approval to 'self-certify' that they have tested their SPF claims and that they stack up. The TGA does not usually do its own testing.
Dr Michelle Wong, a cosmetic chemist, says she doubts the TGA would have the resources to do all of the testing itself.
'And so, in terms of the regulations, most of the time, in this sort of situation where it's a public body, there is always going to be some level of an honour system,' she says.
There are potential inconsistencies in sunscreen testing. SPF effectiveness is measured by essentially getting people to put sunscreens in patches on their skin and measuring how 'red' they get over time.
A TGA spokesperson says it is a known issue that there is variability in SPF testing results across laboratories because testing on humans can be highly subjective and the response to a test can differ dramatically from one individual to another.
'While progress is being made internationally toward in-vitro sunscreen testing (for example, not on human subjects), which will improve consistency of results, these methods are not yet in place,' they said.
Wong, who is known for her work on social media and her blog Lab Muffin, says in-vitro testing would be easier for the TGA to run in-house, which would limit the variability of the results and stop the potential for fraud at labs seeking to make a profit.
She also suggests having a limited number of designated labs that are accepted by the TGA for sunscreen testing.
Wong says although sunscreen is complicated and there are 'technicalities' in the testing and regulation process, the most common problem is 'user error' in that people aren't applying enough product often enough.
'Sunscreens, in general, they work very well, and they are very effective at protecting your skin against sun exposure,' she says, noting that a sunscreen with an SPF of, say, 24 still offers very good protection.
Not long after Choice published its findings, sunscreen was back in the news for different reasons.
Last week, the TGA said it would begin consultation on additional controls for some sunscreen ingredients, including the controversial oxybenzone.
The medicines regulator says it has conducted a review of sunscreen ingredients used in Australia and is recommending additional safeguards for three chemical compounds.
The review proposes that some sunscreen products containing homosalate, oxybenzone and benzophenone be reformulated to ensure sunscreens meet what the TGA considers 'the highest standards of safety for prolonged and frequent use'.
Homosalate and oxybenzone are active ingredients in sunscreen, while benzophenone arises from another ingredient called octocrylene, either as an impurity during the manufacturing process or from degradation as the product ages.
The TGA has begun a consultation process to help determine the level in sunscreens at which these ingredients remain suitable for use.
A week before that, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission launched legal action against the maker of two popular sunscreens over allegations it had misled consumers by falsely claiming its products are 'reef-friendly'.
The consumerregulator alleges Edgewell Personal Care engaged in greenwashing. While these sunscreens do not contain oxybenzone or octinoxate, another chemical linked to coral damage, the ACCC alleges that they contain other ingredients that risk causing harm to coral and marine life. Edgewell is contesting the proceedings.

Dr Alessia Roehnelt, a board-certified endocrinologist in New Jersey, revealed the three most common drinks that can cause significant damage to your body. She noted that coffee, especially when made with disposable pods, could cause a buildup of hormone-disrupting microplastics in the body. Meanwhile, sports drinks are also filled with tumors-causing food dyes that can pave the way for cancer. Apart from this, the physician also said that drinking decaffeinated coffee or tea also pose a risk to your health due to the chemical solvents used to remove its stimulant effects. The warnings comes as two in three American adults drink some form of coffee every day, according to the National Coffee Association. ALong with this, over 159 million Americans regularly drink tea while one in four adults consumes sports and energy at least one time per week in the US. Below, reveals the three popular beverages that can cause long-term damage to your body, as noted by Dr Roehnelt: 1. K-Cups K-Cups, made wth a Keurig machine, are coffee beans or tea leaves sealed in a disposable pod, usually made of plastic. The cup has a plastic ring covered with a foil top, and the inside of the capsule is lined with a filter material to keep the coffee contained while brewing. While more convenient than the traditional coffee-making process, Dr Roehnelt claims that this process can lead to a builup of microplastics inside the liquid and increase the risk of chemical exposure with 'each sip.' Micro and nanoplastics (MNPs) are small plastic pieces less than five millimeters long that can damage DNA and accumulate inside vital organs. Scientists believe that an increasing consumption of microplastics through foods and beverages can cause inflammation and lead to colon cancer. Additionally, a March 2025 study also found that microplastics and their related toxins build up in human brain and cause inflammation and brain damade, which can lead to dementia. It revealed that about a tablespoon worth of microplastics and nanoplastics were discovered in the brain and levels were three to five times higher in people diagnosed with dementia. MNPs have also been linked to cell death, changes in the gut microbiome, blood clots and increased risk of heart attacks. Instead of K-cups, Dr Roehnelt recommends using a French press or stovetop espresso machine, as neither require the use of any plastic cups to filter coffee beans into liquid. 2. Decaf coffee or tea In recent years, decaf beverages have gained popularity due to health concerns and lifestyle preferences. About 26 million Americans drink decaffeinated beverages every day as people's desire for the taste of coffee without the stimulant effects of caffeine continues to rise. However, Dr Roehnelt believes decaf may not be healthy, as many are processed using chemical solvents. Chemical solvents are usually used in the processing of various items including soybeans, ice cream, instant noodles and palm oil to purify and enchance their flavor. Typically, the decaffeination process for coffee beans involves using chemical solvents, primarily methylene chloride and ethyl acetate, to remove the beverage's stimulant effects on the body. But previous research has found that exposure to methylene chloride can increase the risk of liver cancer, lung cancer, breast cancer, brain cancer, leukemia as well as neurotoxicity, liver harm and even death in some cases in humans. In 2024, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) banned most industrial uses of methylene chloride after noting that at least 88 people have died from acute exposure to the solvent since 1980. But despite its well-known dangers, it continues to be used to decaffinate coffee beans. While ethyl acetate is not fatal to humans in small amounts, high levels of ingestions can cause gastrointestinal irritation and, potentially, central nervous system depression. Central nervous system depression refers to a condition where brain and spinal cord activity slows down, impacting various bodily functions such as heart rate and breathing - eventally damaging vital organs. Dr Roehnelt recommends instead opting for herbal teas such as mint or chamomile that naturally do not have any caffeine and therefore do not require any decaffeination processes. 3. Store-bought electrolyte drinks Lastly, Dr Roehnelt warned against drinking electrolyte-filled energy drinks as they are 'filled with artificial sweeteners, food dyes and other chemicals' such as Blue 2. Blue 2 is a modified version of the natural indigo dye and is used to give a blue color to a wide range of products including sports drinks, baked goods, cereals, snack foods, candies, maraschino cherries, sausages, ice cream and sherbet. Previous studies have found that consuming excessive amounts of Blue 2 can raise the risk of tumors developing, particularly in the bladder and testes. Additionally, animal studies have also shown links between Blue 2 and an increased risk of brain tumors. It has also been associated with allergic reactions and hyperactivity in young children. Since his appointment, Human and Health Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr has been making several efforts to ban the use of Red 3, Red 40, Green 3, Blue 1, Blue 2, Yellow 5 and Yellow 6 food dyes from all foods and beverages across the U S. The secretary also announced earlier this month that America's ice cream giants - including Nestle, Kraft Heinz and General Mills - have pledged to remove artificial dyes from their products within the next three years. As an alternative to energy drinks made of synthetic dyes, Dr Roehnelt suggested drinking a glass of water with a sprinke of Celtic salt and a squirt of lemon juice.

Sino Biopharmaceutical to acquire LaNova Medicines for up to $951 million
July 15 (Reuters) - Hong Kong-listed Sino Biopharmaceutical ( opens new tab said on Tuesday it will buy the remaining 95.09% stake it does not hold in Shanghai-based LaNova Medicines for no more than $950.92 million. The acquisition of the cancer treatment developer will enhance Sino's competitiveness and influence in oncology innovation, while also enabling potential future international transactions by leveraging LaNova's R&D capabilities, it added. Sino added LaNova will become an indirect wholly owned subsidiary once the deal is completed, which is expected within 30 business days after regulatory conditions are met. The firm had already bought a 4.91% stake in LaNova in November, opens new tab last year, paying around 142 million yuan ($19.80 million) at the time. LaNova Medicines was founded in 2019, specialising in discovering and developing antibody-based cancer treatments, according to details mentioned on their website. In November last year, Merck (MRK.N), opens new tab licensed an early-stage cancer drug LM-299 from LaNova in a deal worth up to $3.3 billion, taking over its development. The drug candidate targets the PD-1 protein, which prevents the immune system from killing cancerous cells. It also curbs levels of VEGF protein, which can encourage tumor growth if found in excess. Teenage vaping has ‘turned a corner' in Australia, says Mark Butler, as data shows falling rates
The federal government believes dangerous vaping rates among younger Australians may have turned a corner after years of rapid growth, with new research showing take-up could have peaked among teenagers and high school-age children. Data released by the health minister, Mark Butler, on Wednesday showed that vaping rates fell from 17.5% at the start of 2023 to 14.6% in April this year among children aged 14-17 years. Overall, rates for people aged over 15 reduced by more than a third, while vaping rates among the 30-59-year age group also dropped by about half. The figures are is from the Cancer Council's latest Generation Vape research, considered the most comprehensive survey on vaping in Australia. The report says the data follows the July 2024 vaping reforms, which were designed to curb youth access and use, and to reduce the social acceptability of vaping. The figures come as the Therapeutic Goods Administration and Australian Border Force announced more than 10m illicit vapes had been seized since January 2024, worth a combined street value of $500m. Advertising for vaping products is also not allowed under the rules. However, under-the-counter sales are common, with experts warning that unaffordable legal cigarettes and vape restrictions have caused an explosion in black market trade. Butler said in a statement the government was resolute in enforcement of the rules and educating Australians on the health risks associated with vaping. 'Vaping rates skyrocketed in the five years before these reforms, particularly among young people,' he said. In South Australia, school suspensions related to vaping have dropped by 50% since the new laws were introduced. In term 1 of 2023, suspensions topped 388. That number fell to 186 in term 1 of 2024 and a trend of 50% declines continued throughout terms 2 and 3. The vaping crackdown is designed to stop younger people migrating to smoking. Tobacco use remains Australia's leading cause of preventable death and kills more than 24,000 people each year. Butler said a major decrease in vaping and smoking rates would take time, 'but we are here for the long haul for a healthier Australia'. It follows 2023 data analysed by Cancer Council Victoria's Centre for Behavioural Research in Cancer that found an uptick in the proportion of 14-to-17-year-olds using tobacco and vaping, with the centre noting it was the first increase in teen smoking since the early to mid-1990s.
