Luis García Jr. hit a two-run drive for last-place Washington, which had won three straight and five of seven overall. CJ Abrams had three hits.
García connected for his ninth homer in the third inning, lifting the Nationals to a 2-1 lead. But Diaz responded with a solo shot in the fourth for his 14th homer.
Walker singled and scored on Cooper Hummel's pinch-hit single in the fifth, and the Astros grabbed control with three more runs in the sixth.

The main reason why the Astros have been mentioned is because of two reasons: the first being that the team could use a third baseman, and the other is that the team went after Arenado before. However, Arenado wouldn't waive his no-trade clause last offseason when a deal could have been in place for him to go to Houston. However, it has been reported that the Astros have 'no interest in reigniting talks' for Arenado, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports. 'The Houston Astros would like to find a third baseman while Isaac Paredes recovers from his hamstring tear, but have no interest in reigniting talks with the St. Louis Cardinals for third baseman Nolan Arenado,' Nightengale wrote. They had agreed to a trade during the winter, and the Astros had permission to speak to Arenado, but they couldn't convince him they were still going to contend this year.' Houston general manager Dana Brown would say to USA Today that the team couldn't convince Arenado of their plans. 'We tried to convince him that we're not rebuilding, that the window is always open with our owner,' Brown said. 'We planned to compete in 2025 and beyond. He misunderstood the plan.' Cardinals 'entertaining offers' for Nolan Arenado While people will continue to focus on rumors around a possible Arenado trade away from the Cardinals, the third baseman does hold some leverage as he has the no-trade clause. Still, it would also be reported by Katie Woo of The Athletic that St. Louis will 'entertain offers' involving Arenado. 'St. Louis will entertain offers on Nolan Arenado and Sonny Gray,' Woo wrote. 'Both players have full no-trade clauses but could be motivated to waive them for the right fit. [President of Baseball Operations John] Mozeliak has started to gauge the interest of a handful of contending teams, though the talks are described as preliminary.' 'The odds of either player being traded before the deadline remain slim, but the Cardinals are financially motivated to move their contracts,' Woo continued. 'Gray is owed $35 million in 2026, his final guaranteed year of his three-year contract, and Arenado has $31 million (not including deferrals) remaining over the next two seasons.' Arenado has been great defensively, but his offensive numbers have been down as he sports a .237 batting average to go along with 10 home runs and 43 RBIs. It remains to be seen where Arenado ends up with the trade deadline on July 31, as said before. MIAMI (AP) — Jason Alexander pitched six scoreless innings, Jeremy Peña doubled twice and the Houston Astros used a five-run fourth to beat the Miami Marlins 8-2 on Monday night. Alexander picked up his second win of the season after holding Miami to three hits. He struck out six and walked one. The Astros built a 5-0 lead during a disastrous fourth by Marlins starter Sandy Alcantara (6-10), who was perfect his first time through the Houston order before giving up six hits in the inning. Peña led off the fourth with a double. Jesús Sánchez then drove in Peña with a double in his first game against his former team, which dealt him to Houston at the trade deadline. Raiders trade CB Jakorian Bennett to Eagles for DT Thomas Booker IV, AP source says
HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — The Las Vegas Raiders are trading cornerback Jakorian Bennett to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for defensive tackle Thomas Booker IV, a person with knowledge of the deal said Monday. That person spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press because the trade is pending physicals on both players. Bennett, drafted in the fourth round two years ago out of Maryland, started seven games for the Raiders last season before being shut down because of a torn labrum that required surgery. He played well as a cover cornerback, but Bennett was running with the second and third teams this training camp under first-year coach Pete Carroll. At 5-foot-10, Bennett doesn't fit Carroll's preference of playing taller cornerbacks. Six-foot Eric Stokes and 6-2 rookie Darien Porter have been competing with the starters this camp. Booker started one game and played in all 17 last season for the Eagles. He also appeared in four postseason games for the Super Bowl champions. But Booker, a 2022 fifth-round draft pick of Houston, was fifth on the depth chart at a deep defensive tackle position this season. The Raiders released defensive tackle Christian Wilkins on July 24 over a dispute over a recovery plan for a broken foot from last season.
