Taxi strikes, kills pedestrian in downtown Vancouver

The victim, a 55-year-old man, was hit by a Blacktop Taxi at the intersection of Smithe and Cambie streets just after 10 p.m., the Vancouver Police Department said in a statement Saturday. He was pronounced dead in hospital. Police say the taxi driver suffered minor injuries and remained at the scene. The department asked anyone who witnessed the crash or has dash camera video to call 604-717-3012.

The Ottawa Police Service says emergency crews were called to an 'industrial incident' at 8:22 a.m. Police have closed westbound Carling Avenue between Churchill Avenue and Clyde Avenue. A minor injury was reported, police say. An Ottawa paramedics spokesperson says they were not called to the scene. Additional details were not immediately available. Police say the Ministry of Labour has been notified and will be conducting an investigation. The public is being asked to avoid the area.
