WWII Vet Grows Food for Hungry Kids—And Still Helps at Age 96!
Nobody should go hungry! Bill thought, his heart moved. I'll do anything to help them.
He had a lifelong passion for gardening that was instilled in him by his mother during the Great Depression, Bill and Verna had bought a property with 20 acres to grow crops like beans, peppers and corn.
Thinking back on the life lessons his mother had taught him, Bill remembered sharing okra, peas, beans, onions and collard greens from the Mississippi farm where he grew up with all of his neighbors. Planting and picking the crops with the family was a favorite pastime, and Bill knew just what he could do to help.
'We can feed kids with food from our huge garden!' Bill decided, telling Verna his plans.
Week after week, the couple fed more and more families in need with fresh vegetables they grew themselves.
'This is really something,' Bill smiled, realizing the impact they were making. 'What if we make it an official food bank? We can call it The Children's Table!'
Bill and Verna decided to grow peas, potatoes, squash, mustard greens, collard greens, onions, garlic and cucumbers. 'And we'll never ask customers any questions or require proof of income. The Children's Table is for everyone.'
In the early 1990s, the Browns launched their food bank, which serves many food deserts in rural areas around Levy County, Florida, and surrounding counties with more than 1.5 million meals each year.
In Florida's warm climate, they can harvest vegetables year-round, and they usually plant seeds that take about 90 days to mature. People who come to The Children's Table for food assistance receive both fresh produce from the garden and regular shelf-stable foods common at food pantries, such as canned goods, pasta, cereal and oatmeal.
The organization now uses its own volunteer-run, 5-acre garden to grow all the vegetables. While Mr. Bill has retired from the grueling gardening labor, he is still active as president of The Children's Table and is beloved by the community. He even visits the operations manager, Stacey Kile, in her office each day, asking, 'What's going on today?'
The main telephone for The Children's Table is connected to his hearing aid, and even now, at age 96, Mr. Bill is willing to respond to hunger calls in the early morning hours to deliver food to families in need—anytime, anywhere.
I wonder if there's a way to do even more, the kindhearted Mr. Bill thought one day as he dreamed of making an even bigger impact in his community.
Before long, The Children's Table launched its Helping Hand program to provide a $500 check for people in the area who are facing hardships—like a house fire, a sick child or unexpected expenses.
Over the past three decades, Mr. Bill has occasionally had the privilege of serving more than one generation of a family. Many years ago, he brought food to a father who couldn't work due to an injury. Then, years later, a young man came to The Children's Table with a donation and said, 'You don't know me, but when I was a young boy, you came to our house with food!'
'There is nobody anywhere else I know who would do what he has done,' Stacey says of Mr. Bill. 'He has touched thousands of lives. There are certain places you can't go and mention his name without people saying, 'Oh, I know Bill Brown!''
'These people come and we love them, and they know we love them,' Bill's wife, Verna, says. 'When we meet someone and they recognize us and thank us, you can just feel their sincerity.'
As for what drives Mr. Bill to help meet so many needs year after year: 'I just wanted to help someone who needs help,' he says, his heart continuing to fill with gratitude for the chance to serve and meet a need. 'We're not always able to take care of the whole situation, but we are at least always there to let them know that we care.'

Historian wants to return WWII medals to family of N.B. veteran George Mann
A Saskatchewan author and historian wants to return a set of Second World War medals to a New Brunswick veteran's family. John Brady McDonald said the medals belonged to George Mann, who was born in Liverpool, England, in 1905 and moved to Canada after the war. Mann served in the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, which McDonald said was "kind of like the supply chain aspect of the Royal Navy." Mann immigrated to Canada after the war and then married Alice Margaret in Saint John. McDonald's research doesn't say exactly where Mann resided but that he lived in New Brunswick. McDonald has been searching for Mann's relatives since April. He said Mann received the 1939-1945 Star, the Atlantic Star for specific service in the Atlantic Ocean, and the Africa Star for being a part of the campaign in Africa. McDonald said duty in the Atlantic Ocean meant "dodging German submarines and German aircraft trying to take out the convoys that were feeding Britain at the time." Returning veterans' possessions is a project McDonald began in 2022 as a way of honouring military veterans. "That's my way of saying thank you to these veterans and it's something that's very important to me to be able to ensure that our history is not forgotten any more than it already has been," said McDonald, who even covers the cost of framing and shipping the medals. He has returned six sets of medals, a veteran's headstone and a family ration book. But to date, he has never returned anything to family in Atlantic Canada. McDonald got the idea of returning veterans' memorabilia when he learned more about his late grandfather's service. He wants to give families that same experience. "So many times when I've returned medals, not only did they not know that their grandfather served in the Second World War, they don't know what he did." McDonald is a civilian instructor with the Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps and he wants to ensure the stories of sacrifices made by veterans are shared. "We need to understand those ancestors of ours, those grandfathers, those great uncles, those fathers who stood up to fascism, who stood up to oppression, who stood up to the ultimate hatred that we had in the world at the time." He is also concerned about medals being sold as antiques in pawn shops or estate sales. "I wanted to make sure that, you know, our veterans' sacrifices weren't in vain," he said. McDonald said the majority of the medals he receives are sent to him by people who stumble across them. The process of finding relatives can be as quick as days or more than a year. He starts with a name and uses online searches and social media to try and track people down. A lot of his "cold" calls go unanswered, which he understands. But when there is an answer, McDonald said relatives have "immense gratitude and appreciation" for his work. WWII hero's remains finally coming home after 80-year mystery is solved through military dedication
Nearly eight decades after he disappeared in a World War II plane crash over Burma, the remains of a Pennsylvania airman have been identified, paving the way for the hero's long-awaited burial at Arlington National Cemetery. In the summer of 1943, U.S. Army Air Forces 1st Lt. Henry J. Carlin, a 27-year-old from Philadelphia, was among six crew members aboard a B-25C "Mitchell" bomber that went down during a low-altitude raid in Meiktila, Burma. Carlin's remains and those of three others on board were not recovered after the war, and they were declared missing in action. The other two surviving crew members were captured by Japanese forces, according to the report. It is unclear if they returned home. The four heroes' remains were buried in a common grave near Kyunpobin, Burma, without identification, and later recovered by the American Grave Registration Service in 1947. Witnesses only described them as being from an "American crash," complicating the identification process. The bodies, listed as "unknowns" in Honolulu's National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, were exhumed in 2022, after the Department of Defense approved the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency's (DPAA) disinterment request. To identify Carlin's remains, scientists from DPAA used dental, anthropological and radio isotope analysis. The Armed Forces Medical Examiner System also used mitochondrial DNA analysis to make a positive ID, which was confirmed April 16. Bringing closure to a mystery that spanned generations, Carlin's remains will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery in May 2026. Carlin's name is recorded on the Walls of the Missing at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, an American Battle Monuments Commission site in the Philippines, along with the others missing from WWII, according to the DPAA. A rosette will be placed next to his name to indicate he has been accounted for. Carlin served as a navigator and was a member of the 22nd Bombardment Squadron (Medium), 341st Bombardment Group (Medium), 10th Air Force.
