Today in Politics: SC to hear pleas challenging Waqf Act; Cong to launch ‘Jai Hind Sabhas' on national security
The pleas will be heard by a bench comprising Chief Justice B R Gavai and Justice Augustine George Masih. The bench said it would hear arguments for passing interim directions on three issues including the power to denotify properties declared as waqf by courts, waqf-by-user or waqf by deed.
The second issue raised by the petitioners relates to the composition of state waqf boards and the Central Waqf Council, where they contend only Muslims should operate except ex-officio members.
The third issue relates to a provision that says a waqf property will not be treated as a waqf when the collector conducts an inquiry to ascertain if the property is government land.
The Centre had opposed the apex court's proposal to pass an interim order against the denotification of waqf properties, including 'waqf by user', aside from staying a provision allowing the inclusion of non-Muslims in the central waqf councils and boards.
Congress's 'Jai Hind Sabhas'
Beginning on Tuesday, and running until May 30, the Congress is set to hold 'Jai Hind Sabhas' in 15 states to raise questions on the government's handling of national security and its 'silence' on the 'concerning involvement' of the US in halting hostilities between India and Pakistan.
These meetings will see the involvement of army veterans, party leaders and the general public, Congress general secretary in-charge organisation K C Venugopal said in a post on X.
'Congress will hold 'Jai Hind Sabhas' across India to salute the supreme valour and success of our Armed Forces. We also must raise serious questions on security lapses, the Government's handling of national security, and its silence on the concerning involvement of the US in our national security matters,' Venugopal said.
Jai Hind Sabhas will be held in Delhi, Barmer, Shimla, Haldwani, Patna, Jabalpur, Pune, Goa, Bengaluru, Kochi, Guwahati, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bhubaneswar and Pathankot.
The Congress has accused the BJP of 'politicising' Operation Sindoor trying to make the military action a 'brand' for itself.
Meanwhile, in Karnataka, the Congress government is set to mark two years in power with an event at Hosapete in Vijayanagara district. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said three lakh people are expected to attend the event, which will also see Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi present besides Karnataka leaders like Deputy CM D K Shivakumar.
MP Cabinet meet at Rajwada Palace
On Tuesday, the Madhya Pradesh cabinet will meet at the historic Rajwada Palace in Indore to mark the conclusion of the 300th birth anniversary celebrations of famed 18th-century queen Devi Ahilyabai Holkar. The Cabinet is expected to make several decisions concerning public welfare, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said.
Ahilyabai Holkar, wife of Holkar dynasty ruler Malhar Rao Holkar, governed the Malwa region from 1767 to 1795. She is revered for her administrative skills, philanthropy, and religious devotion.
Recently, the Maharashtra Cabinet also held a meeting at Ahilyabai's birthplace in the Ahilyanagar district to commemorate her 300th birth anniversary. Though Ahilyabai is highly revered among all castes and communities, present-day Holkars belong to the Dhangar community, which has a significant presence in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.

Crowds swell as Rahul yatra raises pitch over Bihar SIR
PATNA: The ongoing 16-day, 3,000-km Yatra of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been drawing massive crowds in Bihar, with people lining the roads, waving flags, and cheering him. Hundreds of young people were seen clicking selfies, while Rahul himself appeared overwhelmed by the response. On Tuesday, the Yatra moved from Gaya towards Nawada and Sheikhpura. In Nawada, Rahul addressed a public meeting on the third day of the march before continuing his journey. The programme has been running behind schedule, as Rahul makes frequent unscheduled halts to meet people personally. Some, however, were left disappointed. 'I wanted to take a selfie with Rahul Gandhi, but could not because of the rush. I don't know if I'll ever get the chance again,' said Sangeeta Kumari, 21, a student from Nawada. Her cousin Raj Kishore, a 24-year-old UPSC aspirant, was luckier. 'I jostled with Congress workers to get close. The security was tight, but I managed to take a photo with him,' he said.

Brazilian police say ex-President Bolsonaro had planned to flee to Argentina seeking asylum
BRAZILIA: Brazil's federal police said that messages found on the telephone of embattled former president Jair Bolsonaro showed that at one point he wanted to flee to Argentina and request political asylum, according to documents seen Wednesday by the Associated Press. Bolsonaro is currently awaiting a Supreme Court ruling about an alleged coup attempt and on Wednesday found out he might face another case as police formally accused him and one of his sons, Eduardo Bolsonaro, of obstruction of justice in connection with his pending trial. The AP had access to the police investigation, messaging app exchanges, voice messages and reviewed the documents, which were sent to Brazil's Supreme Court. The 170-page police report said that Bolsonaro had drafted a request for political asylum from Argentine President Javier Milei's government dated Feb. 10, 2024. Bolsonaro saved the document two days after authorities searched his home and office as part of an investigation into an alleged coup plot. In a 33-page letter addressed to Milei, Bolsonaro claimed he was being politically persecuted in Brazil. 'I, Jair Messias Bolsonaro, request political asylum from Your Excellency in the Republic of Argentina, under an urgent regime, as I find myself in a situation of political persecution in Brazil and fear for my life,' the former Brazilian leader wrote. Argentina's presidential spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Bolsonaro did not make comments about the investigation either.

PM Degree Row: Delhi HC defers verdict on DU's plea against CIC order
New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday deferred pronouncement of its verdict on Delhi University's plea challenging a CIC order directing disclosure of information on the bachelor's degree of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Justice Sachin Datta, who was scheduled to pass the judgment at around 2.30 pm, did not preside on Wednesday. The verdict is likely to be pronounced on August 25. At the time of arguments, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who appeared for DU, argued the CIC order deserved to be set aside for the "right to privacy" superseded the "right to know". Mehta, however, had said the university was willing to show to the court its record pertaining to Modi's degree but cannot disclose the same for "scrutiny by strangers" under the RTI law. The court has reserved its judgement on other similar petitions which would also be pronounced. Following an RTI application by one Neeraj, the Central Information Commission (CIC) on December 21, 2016, allowed inspection of records of all students who cleared the BA exam in 1978 -- the year Prime Minister Modi also passed it. The High Court stayed the CIC order on January 23, 2017. DU challenged the CIC order on the ground that it held the information of students in a fiduciary capacity and "mere curiosity" in the absence of public interest did not entitle anyone to seek private information under the RTI law. Earlier, the counsel for the RTI applicants had defended the CIC's order on the ground that the Right to Information (RTI) Act provided for disclosure of the prime minister's educational information in greater public good.
