News gets worse for Moses, Blues, Eels

Mitchell Moses won't return for the third State of Origin clash after scans confirmed the severity of his calf injury which has provided a hammer blow to the Blues and his club side Parramatta.
Jarome Luai was brought into NSW camp late on Thursday after confirmation star playmaker Moses had strained his calf, ruling him out of next Wednesday's second clash with the Maroons.
But scans have confirmed just how bad the injury is, with Moses to be sidelined for up to six weeks, ruling him out of the third clash in Sydney.
Moses might not be back in the NRL until as late as round 21 cruelling the chances of the Eels to lift themselves out of second last on the ladder in new coach Jason Ryles' first season in charge.
It comes after Moses had his 2024 season ended by a bicep injury in last year's third Origin clash. He only played eight games last season.
NSW coach Laurie Daley vowed to charge on without Moses, confident Luai could get the job done, adamant the late change wouldn't prove too big a hurdle to overcome.
'It's a funny game, rugby league. With the group of guys that you've got, you've got to make sure that they're prepared really well,' he said.
'We've had setbacks and challenges all the way through the campaign so far, but I'd be disappointed if the fact that we lost a guy six days out and we couldn't cope with that.
'I think the guys are very professional. It's not like we're bringing in a rookie; we're bringing in a guy who has won Origin series before and won four grand finals so he knows what he's doing.'
The Blues can seal back-to-back series wins with a game two victory.

How to watch Chelsea vs Manchester United live: Stream link, TV channel, team news, prediction

Chelsea's tenuous hold on a Champions League space meets an old rival when lower-half Manchester United visit Stamford Bridge on Friday. The Blues enter Week 37 with 63 points, above sixth-place Aston Villa on goal differential and seventh-place Nottingham Forest by a single point. Advertisement WATCH — Chelsea v Manchester United Enzo Maresca's men control their own destiny with the visit from the Red Devils before a potentially-huge scrap at Forest to close the season. As for Friday's visitors, Manchester United are prepping for the Europa League Final, their only path to the Champions League thanks to a mostly-abysmal Premier League campaign. The 16th-place Red Devils go to London with more than a single eye on their Wednesday UEL Final against Tottenham Hotspur in Bilbao. Of course Amorim will expect fire from the players he selects for this match, but Chelsea's first-choice team — even without suspended Nicolas Jackson — is better than United's first-choice team, let alone its depth. Chelsea 3-1 Man United.

The Crusaders will host the Super Rugby final after edging the Blues 21-14 in the first semifinal

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand -- The Christchurch-based Crusaders will host the Super Rugby final for a record eighth time after edging the Blues 21-14 on Friday to end the Blues' one-year title reign. The Crusaders improved their winning record in home playoffs to 31-0 in a thrilling match that ended in the 85th minute. They will now face the winner of Saturday's second semifinal between the Hamilton-based Chiefs and ACT Brumbies as they attempt to win the Super Rugby title for the 13th time. The Crusaders rallied from two tries and a man down after 21 minutes to level the score at 14-14 by halftime. They took the lead for the first and last time with Will Jordan's second try of the match in the 70th minute and held on under immense pressure. The Blues held the ball through 40 phases on the Crusaders' goalline after the fulltime siren, won a penalty and attacked again before backrower Christian Lio-Willie won the turnover that ended the match. 'That was just pride,' Jordan said. "Some boys must have made 10 or 15 tackles just in that last five or 10 minutes. 'The Blues are a helluva side, champions and showed that tonight. We just managed to hold out.' The Blues opened the scoring with a try to winger Mark Tele'a after 11 minutes. The Crusaders were then reduced to 14 men when center Braydon Ennor was sin-binned after a head clash with Hoskins Sotutu. Blues center Rieko Ioane scored under the posts in the absence of his marker in the 21st minute and Beauden Barrett converted to make the score 14-0. The Crusaders scored through backrower Tom Christie in the 24th minute and when the Blues were down to 14 men with Joshua Fusitua in the sin-bin, scored through Jordan to level the scores. Jordan was outstanding in the aerial contest and dangerous around the field. The Crusaders weathered pressure near their goalline between the 46th and 51st minutes before relieving that pressure with the first of a series of scrum penalties. The Blues were forced to use hooker Ricky Riccitelli at loosehead prop temporarily after exhausting their prop resources. After a series of eight consecutive penalties in the Blues' 22, Jordan scored the match-winning try. The Blues then threw everything at the Crusaders to keep the match and their title defense alive but couldn't score again. 'We started very well but we let them back in and they were good at what they pride themselves on around their set piece,' Blues captain Patrick Tuipulotu said. 'On top of that we were pretty ill-disciplined and they wre able to get on top of us in that way.'
