Mandala Murders Actor Piloo Vidyarthi Backs Shanoo Sharma's Casting Process: 'She's Clear…'
Piloo Vidyarthi praised Shanoo Sharma's casting process for Mandala Murders. Recently, several actors called out Sharma for her 'weird' audition process.
Piloo Vidyarthi, who has been earning praise for her portrayal of Kalindi Shastri in Mandala Murders, believes that the role's success had as much to do with trust as it did with her craft. In an exclusive conversation with News18 Showsha, the seasoned actor credited casting director Shanoo Sharma for recognising her potential and giving her the platform to deliver. Please note, the interview was conducted days before Sharma was called out by several actors for her 'weird' casting process.
It was YRF casting lead Shanoo Sharma who roped in Piloo Vidyarthi as Kalindi Shastri in Mandala Murders. Praising her stance, Vidyarthi told us, 'Shanoo Sharma knows what I can deliver. She has a different audition process. She didn't meet anyone for Kalindi. She knew and she called me and made me audition 2–3 times. She is clear about what she wants. She has been associated with YRF for a long time and knows her job. She knows that she wants me, she will extract that from me and pass it on saying, 'She is the one'. She has that hold. You need more such casting directors".
The actor emphasised that this clarity of vision is rare but invaluable in the industry, especially for performers who thrive when directors and casting teams believe in them. Vidyarthi's journey with Mandala Murders was, in her own words, 'a satisfying experience" because the makers gave her character weight, space, and importance.
Piloo Vidyarthi says Mandala Murders is not about black magic
Speaking about Mandala Murders, and whether she believes in the supernatural herself, Piloo Vidyarthi told us, 'No, (laughs)." She then went on to speak about the show. She revealed that the brief she received wasn't about mysticism — it was science. 'It's actually not what people think. It's a sci-fi series set in the Indian 1952 context. My character was part of a scientific cult… researchers and engineers who believed in natural energy transfers, from the arms, head, body, and mixing them. The story was about energy, not black magic."
But public perception was very different. 'They were outcasts as witches. But that's what makes the story so fascinating. It's not ghosts or black magic. People in opposition used to comment that they are performing black magic, so burn them. But they didn't burn, they continued with what they are doing."
Why is Shanoo Sharma making headlines?
Recently, Isha Talwar, known for her acclaimed roles in Mirzapur, Saas Bahu Aur Flamingo, and Article 15, spoke out against a bizarre and uncomfortable audition experience she had with YRF casting director Shanoo Sharma.
'I was told I should have no inhibitions as an actor and hence should be able to cry at a table with Shanoo and her assistants watching me," Isha wrote as a reply to a user on Instagram. Calling the experience 'confusing and weird," she added that it 'shattered [her] confidence as a young girl in films."
Isha criticised the lack of professionalism, arguing that casting directors should either arrange an appropriate space for auditions or cover the cost of a controlled venue. Choosing to stand by her principles, she declined to audition in such conditions and, as expected, lost the role. Still, she says she has no regrets about her decision. 'At least I didn't give in to the weird ask and surely didn't cry at a restaurant for a role!" she wrote, ending her post with the hashtag #DignityFirstAlways," she said.
Soon after, Manipuri actor Bijou Thaangjam reacted to Isha Talwar's comment on Instagram, revealing that he had a similar experience with Shanoo Sharma too.
Reacting to Isha Talwar's comment about her audition experience with Shanoo Sharma, Bijou Thaangjam commented, '@talwarisha I hear you! My very first film audition was with her, for Byomkesh Bakshy. I wasn't fluent in Hindi, not very confident, but hopeful to give it my best. And just like your experience, I was asked to perform a scene right in front of a café, the one that used to be called Bru World, Yari Road. I didn't give in. A few days later, her assistant called me back for a proper studio audition. But by then, I had already signed Mary Kom." Bijou played the role of Naobi in Omung Kumar's 2014 film Mary Kom, starring Priyanka Chopra.

Chennai to host three-day Patriotic Film Festival from tomorrow ahead of Independence Day
Patriotism has long been a central theme in Indian cinema, with filmmakers across generations celebrating the nation's history, struggles, and spirit through powerful storytelling. This Independence Day week, that enduring tradition will be honoured through a special patriotic film festival, is jointly organised by the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) and the National Film Archive of India (NFAI). The three-day festival, to be held from August 11 to 13 at the Tagore Film Centre in Chennai, will showcase a curated selection of landmark feature films and documentaries that have stirred national pride over the decades. The event will be inaugurated on Monday, following the opening screening of the 1965 classic 'Shaheed', which pays tribute to the sacrifices of freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev. Seven feature films and four documentaries are on the festival's line-up. Among the feature films are timeless works such as 'Veerapandiya Kattabomman' (1959) and 'Parasakthi' (1952) -- both starring the legendary Sivaji Ganesan -- as well as more recent hits like 'Uri: The Surgical Strike' (2019) and 'Swatantra Veer Savarkar' (2023). Other notable titles include 'Saat Hindustani' (1969), Amitabh Bachchan's debut film set against the backdrop of the liberation of Goa, which will be the festival's closing screening. The documentary segment will feature 'Our Flag, Shahadat, Netaji Subash Chandra Bose, and Tilak', each exploring pivotal moments and personalities in India's freedom struggle and nation-building journey. According to the organisers, the festival aims to connect audiences -- especially younger generations -- with films that have not only entertained but also inspired patriotism and civic pride. The screenings will serve as a reminder of cinema's powerful role in shaping and reflecting India's collective identity. Entry to all screenings is free, offering the people an opportunity to experience these classics on the big screen. "We want people to relive the stories that shaped our nation and inspired millions," an NFDC official said. For additional details about the schedule and screenings, interested viewers can contact the organisers at 8778553991.

He noted the similarities in their careers and praised NTR for his dedication, calling him a 'one-take final-take star.' Hrithik mentioned that he has learned the importance of giving 100 percent to each shot from NTR, a lesson he intends to carry forward in his future projects. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Pallav Paliwal (@pallav_paliwal) 'I see a lot of myself in Tarak. We have had very similar journeys for 25 years now, and I think Tarak sees a little bit of himself in me also. It is true when they say that he is a one-take final-take star. On set, Tarak, I have not just observed you, but I have learnt from you. I have learnt how to go into a shot 100% — not 99.99%, not 99.999, but 100%. Which is why when he comes out of a shot, there is no judgement on me. He will not even check the shot because he knows he has given everything to it. And I will apply that in my future films. Tarak, thank you for teaching me that," he said. About War 2 War 2's plot sets up an intense face-off between Hrithik Roshan's character, Major Kabir Dhaliwal, and Jr NTR's Vikram. Both are Indian spies but operate on vastly different interpretations of patriotism, leading to a clash that promises to be both physical and ideological. Kiara Advani steps in as Kavya Luthra, a character expected to play a pivotal role in the unfolding drama. Directed by Ayan Mukerji, War 2 serves as the sequel to the 2019 blockbuster War, which starred Hrithik Roshan, Tiger Shroff, and Vaani Kapoor. The first film was a runaway hit, praised for its slick action and stylish storytelling. This sequel is also a part of the growing YRF Spy Universe, which connects characters and narratives from films like Pathaan and Tiger Zinda Hai. view comments First Published: August 10, 2025, 21:33 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
