BJP goverments targeting Bengalis; labelling them Bangladeshi for speaking their tongue: Mamata
Accusing Bharatiya Janata Party governments in different parts of the country of targeting Bengali-speaking citizens, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Monday that state governments are labelling residents of Bengal with valid documents as illegal Bangladeshi immigrants.
Addressing the State Assembly, the Chief Minister said that BJP ruled governments are depriving migrant workers of their right to earn a livelihood despite their possessing voter IDs, PAN, and Aadhaar cards.
'Despite having all the legal documents. Bengalis are being pushed into Bangladesh. If anyone speaks Bengali, they become Bangladeshi? This is happening in every state that has double engine governments,' Ms. Banerjee said.
Double engine discrimination
The Chief Minister had in the past alleged that migrant workers from the State are being targeted in BJP ruled states. On this occasion Ms. Banerjee accused the double engine states of language based discrimination.
Her remarks came a day after three residents of West Bengal, working in Mumbai were allegedly forced into Bangladesh by the BSF. The migrant workers, two from Murshidabad and one from Purba Bardhaman, however, were repatriated on Sunday to West Bengal after intervention by the State authorities.
The Chief Minister also targeted the West Bengal State BJP president, Sukanta Majumadar, calling him a 'half minister.' Mr. Majumdar is the Minister of State for Education & Development of the North Eastern Region and has been embroiled in a controversy for hurling a poster resembling a pair of slippers towards a police officer during protests near the Chief Minister's residence. 'There is a half-central minister who is in love with slippers. Why don't they (BJP) open slipper shops?' she said without naming anyone.
Denial of central funds
Ms. Banerjee spoke out on the denial of central funds to the State. She said that the Union Government sent 155 teams to the State looking for corruption and found nothing. She stressed that funds for MGNREGA have been stopped by the Centre and the State Government has subsequently started its own scheme named 'Karmashree,' as part of which it has created 1.5 crore mandays under various schemes.
'Bengal has topped road and rural housing project rankings five times in a row... No one can derail us or stop us from realising our dreams,' the Chief Minister said.
Ms. Banerjee also spoke about the political courtesy her party displayed over the Air India plane tragedy in Ahmedabad. 'BJP looted the country and sold it. Even on the day so many died in Gujarat, we didn't speak a word. That's called political courtesy,' Ms. Banerjee said.
BJP legislators raised slogans while the Chief Minister was addressing the State Assembly. During proceedings in the House on Monday two BJP legislators were escorted out of the House. The BJP legislator Manoj Oraon was suspended for a day by the Speaker Biman Banerjee for unruly behaviour.

Lalu Yadav And The Ambedkar Photo Controversy: How BJP Turned The 'Dalit' Table In Bihar In 12 Months
Last Updated: A viral photo of RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, appearing to disrespect a portrait of BR Ambedkar, has sparked outrage among Bihar's SC and ST communities In politics, a week is a long time, and a year feels like a lifetime. It is no wonder that after last May's Lok Sabha election results, when the BJP lost 28 seats in Uttar Pradesh and nine in Bihar, the party was uneasy. A year ago, it was grappling with how the slogan '400 paar' had been used against it by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, RJD, Samajwadi Party, and other opposition parties. They projected fears of reservation vanishing, which dearly cost the BJP. The SP called it a triumph of 'PDA' (pichda-dalit-adivasi) and the RJD claimed it as Dalits rejecting the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). But things have changed in Bihar, where an assembly election is scheduled later this year. A viral photo op has significantly shifted the political landscape. On RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav's birthday, a follower gifted him with a portrait of BR Ambedkar, which he seemingly did not acknowledge. The video shows the former chief minister of Bihar stretching his legs while the portrait is placed on the chair, appearing disrespectful. Ambedkar is revered by many backward communities in Bihar, where Scheduled Castes (SC) make up 19.65 per cent and Scheduled Tribes (ST) constitute 1.68 per cent of the population, as per a 2022 caste-based survey. This incident has angered over 20 per cent of Bihar's population, presenting an opportunity for the BJP just ahead of the elections. भारत को संविधान देने वाले बाबा साहेब डॉ. भीमराव अंबेडकर जी के अपमान से मन अत्यंत दुखित है।लालू यादव और राजद को न तो बिहार माफ करेगा और न ही देश!- माननीय केन्द्रीय कृषि मंत्री श्री @ChouhanShivraj #BabasahebAmbedkar #DalitVirodhiRJD — BJP Bihar (@BJP4Bihar) June 16, 2025 The BJP deployed its top leaders to capitalise on the incident, including former chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who carefully criticised Lalu Prasad without hurting Bihari pride. He stressed on the disrespect shown to Ambedkar, stating: 'I have one lament. What has happened to you, Lalu Yadav ji? All these talks of backwards were just for pretense? The man who gave us the Constitution, who gave us reservation, you are disrespecting that person — Dr BR Ambedkar! My mind is troubled. I am hurt. The disrespect shown to his photo exposes the real intent of Lalu Yadav and the RJD. The elephant has one set of teeth for eating and another just to show. Neither Bihar nor India will forgive Lalu ji or RJD ever." ये 'चित्र' नहीं, आरजेडी का 'चरित्र' है। #ShameOnLaluFamily #DalitVirodhiRJD #BabasahebAmbedkar — BJP Bihar (@BJP4Bihar) June 15, 2025 The Bihar BJP has been vigorously promoting this photo through social media, using hashtags like 'Dalit Virodhi RJD'. On Monday, it tweeted that five days had gone by without an apology from Lalu Yadav, attributing this to his 'pride". Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, who is from the Dalit community, also criticised Lalu Prasad, saying: 'One came with a photo of Bhimrao Ambedkar and he wanted to gift him (Lalu Prasad). The body language of Lalu ji indicates a pride, which was reflected even in the way he was sitting. Now that this matter has become so big and you have disrespected Babasaheb, but his pride stops him from apologising." Meghwal said disrespecting Ambedkar while claiming to support the unprivileged cannot go hand in hand. 'People of Bihar, in the coming days will teach Lalu ji a lesson," he added. Union environment minister Bhupendra Yadav, who was in charge of the BJP's 2020 Bihar polls, demanded an apology. 'Bihar's citizen hasn't forgotten the tenure of Lalu ji. During Lalu ji's reign, the most amount of injustices were perpetrated against extremely backwards and Dalits…He is so submerged in his pride…that scene itself depicts his pride. That is why India's poor, extremely backwards, those who believe in social justice, know the way Lalu ji kept the photo near his leg…it hurt me too. I personally think he should apologise," he said. Five days later, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav dismissed the issue saying: 'This is not even an issue. No one has insulted anyone…" The Bihar SC commission, however, thinks otherwise. It has issued a notice to Lalu Yadav for allegedly insulting Ambedkar on his birth anniversary, giving him 15 days to respond. As the BJP goes all out in Bihar, it is remarkable to see how much can change in a year in Indian politics. An election slogan or a photo op can indeed be decisive.

Accountability Missing, Terrorists Still At Large: Abhishek Banerjee Slams Centre over Pahalgam Attack
In a scathing critique, TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee has launched a pointed attack on the Centre over its silence and alleged failure in handling the Pahalgam terror attack, which left 26 civilians dead more than 55 days ago. Raising five hard-hitting questions on social media, Banerjee questioned the government's border security preparedness, intelligence lapses, and what he called a shocking lack of transparency. Banerjee demanded to know how four terrorists crossed Indian borders undetected and questioned why the Intelligence Bureau chief was granted a one-year extension shortly after the attack. "Why was he rewarded rather than held accountable?" he asked. He also raised a red flag over the silence surrounding the terrorists responsible. 'Are they dead or alive? If neutralized, why hasn't the government said so? If not, why this disturbing silence?' he wrote. It has been over 55 DAYS since the PAHALGAM terror attack. It is deeply concerning that in a democracy neither the mainstream media, members of the opposition, nor the judiciary has stepped forward to raise these five critical questions before the Government of India. However, as… — Abhishek Banerjee (@abhishekaitc) June 16, 2025 Banerjee went further, questioning India's foreign policy direction, asking why global financial institutions rewarded Pakistan with billions in aid just weeks after the attack, and how it managed to secure the Vice-Chair seat at the UN Counter-Terrorism Committee. Despite being part of India's official post-attack outreach delegations, Banerjee made it clear that 'India deserves accountability, not spin.' In a speech delivered in Japan during the diplomatic mission, he minced no words: 'If terrorism is a rabid dog, Pakistan is its vile handler.' This marks one of the strongest public challenges to the Modi government's handling of national security from a sitting MP, with Banerjee alleging that critical questions have been ignored by the media, judiciary, and even opposition voices. As public pressure builds, Banerjee's intervention has reignited calls for clarity, justice, and decisive action.

"American President is absolutely right": Nishikant Dubey backs Trump's mass deportation remarks
New Delhi [India], June 17 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Nishikant Dubey supported US President Donald Trump's strong remarks on illegal immigration and mass deportation in America on Monday. Dubey claimed that India too was facing a similar crisis, blaming large-scale settlement of illegal Bangladeshi migrants across states like Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Assam, Tripura, Delhi, and Mumbai for vote bank politics. In a post on X, Dubey said, 'The American President is absolutely right. In our country too, illegal Bangladeshi intruders have been settled on a large scale in Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Assam, Tripura, Delhi, Mumbai for vote bank.' He further linked the issue to a global concern over cultural and civilisational identity. 'The entire world from America to Britain, European countries are not able to save their civilisation, culture, this is a movement of the whole world, by running a similar mass movement in India too, the women, tribals, scheduled caste people of the country can be saved,' Dubey added. Dubey's remarks came a day after Donald Trump announced plans for the largest mass deportation program in US history, calling it a response to rising illegal migration in major cities. 'Our Nation's ICE Officers have shown incredible strength, determination, and courage as they facilitate a very important mission, the largest Mass Deportation Operation of Illegal Aliens in History,' Trump said on Sunday night. He alleged that Democratic politicians were using illegal immigrants to expand their voter base. 'These, and other such Cities, are the core of the Democrat Power Center, where they use Illegal Aliens to expand their Voter Base, cheat in Elections, and grow the Welfare State, robbing good-paying Jobs and Benefits from Hardworking American Citizens,' he said. Trump accused the 'Radical Left Democrats' of enabling open borders and policies that he claimed threatened American safety and values. 'That is why they believe in Open Borders, Transgender for Everybody, and Men playing in Women's Sports,' he added. He emphasised that ICE and law enforcement would be fully supported in their mission. 'Our Federal Government will continue to be focused on the REMIGRATION of Aliens to the places from where they came,' Trump said, adding that the aim was to 'reverse the tide of Mass Destruction Migration'.
