TNB Shares Slip At Mid-morning After RM840.1 Mln IRB Tax Notice

KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 (Bernama) -- Tenaga Nasional Bhd's (TNB) shares slip at mid-morning trading after receiving a notice seeking an additional RM840.1 million in assessment for 2022 from the Inland Revenue Board (IRB).
At 10.51 am, the counter fell 18 sen to RM13.42 with a total of 2.91 million shares traded.
In a note today, CIMB Securities Bhd said the issue was due to the cumulative amount from notices seeking additional assessment for the years 2013–2021 of RM5.05 billion, net of remission of penalties and RM1.76 billion paid to IRB in December 2020, for 2016-2017, bringing the total to RM5.89 billion to date.
'We believe there is a risk that the IRB may also potentially issue a notice of additional assessment for 2023–2024.
'If TNB's 2023-2024 financial year capital expenditure provides any indication, we think the additional tax assessment for 2023–2024 could be around RM2 billion, which raises the total amount for 2013–2024 to nearly RM8 billion,' it said.
The investment bank also said in light of the Federal Court's decision regarding a similar notice for 2018, TNB is currently evaluating its available legal options to address the issue.
'This evaluation takes into consideration that TNB has already applied for investment allowance (IA) under Schedule 7B of the Income Tax Act 1967 (including those for 2022) to the Finance Minister,' it said.
Therefore, CIMB Securities has maintained a 'Buy' call on TNB with a target price of RM15.75 per share.
On July 2, the Federal Court's final ruling allowed the IRB's appeal, overturning the decision by the High Court and the Court of Appeal, which had previously ruled in favour of TNB's judicial review application to set aside the notice of additional assessment amounting to RM1.25 billion for 2018.

MP13: Govt to curb abandoned housing projects with build-then-sell model

UNDER the 13th Malaysia Plan, the government plans to mandate the 'build-then-sell' model via amendments to Act 118 to curb abandoned housing projects, improve accountability and regulatory oversight. 'While this may pressure developers' balance sheets, financially stronger players are poised to benefit. The plan also highlights strategic industrial zones like JSSEZ, Kulim Hi-Tech Park and Carey Island, which are well-positioned due to infrastructure and location, in our view,' said Maybank Investment Bank. In our view, the BTS approach will help to reduce the risk of abandoned projects, encourages careful planning and better product quality to attract buyers. It may also address the oversupply issue by discouraging reckless launches and promoting more responsible, demand-driven development. However, the BTS model could weigh on developers' balance sheets, as financing must be secured before construction begins. The existing and new industrial parks/zones are poised to reshape the industrial investment landscape, intensifying competition as investors gain more choices and states offer varied incentives. We see JSSEZ, KHTP and Carey Island as the most competitive due to their strategic location to Singapore (JSSEZ) and Penang (KHTP), as well as strong infrastructure (Port of Tanjung Pelepas, upcoming JB-Spore Rapid Transit System [RTS] and Carey Island Port). Risk to our calls are such as the weaker-than-expected property sales dragged by weaker economic outlook, policy risks, stricter lending measures by the banks, higher-than-expected Liquidated Ascertained Damages compensation following latest ruling by the Federal Court, and rising building material costs and labour issues. —Aug 1, 2025 Main image: Tekkashop

Trading ideas: TNB, ITMAX, YTL-REIT, Paramount, Bintai Kinden, Chin Hin, Pharmaniaga, Unisem, Avillion

KUALA LUMPUR: Stocks to watch today include Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB), ITMax System Bhd , YTL Hospitality Real Estate Investment Trust (YTL‑REIT), Paramount Corp Bhd , Bintai Kinden Corp Bhd, Chin Hin Group Bhd (CHGB), Pharmaniaga Bhd , Unisem (M) Bhd and Avillion Bhd , following their recent corporate developments. TNB has received an additional tax assessment of RM609.03mil for 2023 from the Inland Revenue Board. The group is reviewing its legal options, noting it has applied for Investment Allowance under the Income Tax Act. YTL REIT posted a lower net profit of RM148.56mil for the financial year ended June 30, 2025 (FY2025), compared to RM178.0mil recorded in the previous year. Revenue slipped to RM548.30mil from RM554.90mil previously. Paramount is acquiring 18.97 acres of freehold land in Bandar Cassia, Penang, for RM57.84mil to boost its landbank in the northern region. The project is expected to generate a GDV of RM744mil and will be funded via internal funds and borrowings. ITMax has secured a contract worth RM145mil from the Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) for the deployment and maintenance of the smart traffic light system across the Johor Baru area. Bintai Kinden's FY25 financial statements were deemed true and fair by auditors, with a qualification tied only to legacy FY24 opening balances. Despite posting a pre-tax loss of RM31.97mil on lower revenue, the group saw an improved financial position, secured new projects, and expects stronger contributions ahead, with optimism about exiting PN17 status this year. Chin Hin is disposing of its entire equity interest in Metex Steel Sdn Bhd (MSSB) to EC Excel Wire Sdn Bhd for RM70mil. The proposed disposal provides an opportunity for the company to unlock and monetise its investment in MSSB. Pharmaniaga has completed its rights issue and regularisation plan, paving the way for the group to exit PN17 status by the first quarter of 2026. The rights issue saw full subscription with a 26.14% oversubscription rate, while the private placement attracted 19 new investors, reflecting strong confidence in the group's recovery and long-term growth plans. Unisem reported a net profit of RM9.13mil for 2QFY25, down from RM16.76mil a year earlier, with earnings per share falling to 0.57 sen from 1.04 sen. Revenue during the quarter stood at RM475.15mil as compared to RM394.59mil in 2QFY24. Avillion's external auditor flags material uncertainty over the group's ability to continue as a going concern due to continued losses and negative cash flow. Despite the concerns, the auditor's opinion on the FY25 financial statements remains unmodified.

High CPO prices to lift IOI Corp earnings

RHB Research said the company's outlook remains positive as upstream earnings will continue to do well on strong CPO prices. PETALING JAYA: IOI Corp Bhd is expected to deliver stronger earnings in the coming financial years as it benefits from elevated crude palm oil (CPO) prices while pursuing fresh income streams through new ventures as well as mergers and acquisitions. The group is targeting fresh fruit bunch (FFB) output growth and cost containment measures that could support margins going forward. According to RHB Research, which met with IOI Corp's management recently, the company's outlook remains positive as upstream earnings will continue to do well on strong CPO prices. This is further supported by the group's embarking on new ventures to diversify its income streams. The research house said the group's valuation was still appealing, trading at 17.5 times its forecast price-earnings ratio for 2026, at the lower end of the 17 to 22 times range of peers. On production, it noted that IOI Corp achieved FFB growth of 1.3% year-on-year (y-o-y) in the financial year ended June 30, 2025 (FY25) – below its initial 3% target. 'While output saw a mini peak in April, IOI Corp expects production to pick up in July, with a bigger peak in the August to September period,' it said. For FY26, the group was targeting FFB output growth of 3% to 5% on the back of better weather conditions in line with RHB Research's 4% forecast. The company was also expected to keep unit costs in check. 'IOI Corp expects FY25 costs to come in at around RM2,000 to RM2,100 per tonne,' RHB Research said, adding that it had already secured fertiliser requirements for the first half of FY26 at flat prices y-o-y. However, a 2% to 3% rise in costs could result from minimum wage adjustments and Employees Provident Fund contribution requirements. On regulatory risks, RHB Research said IOI Corp would face minimal impact from the government's expanded sales and service tax (SST) and US tariffs. The group had obtained SST exemptions for its oleochemicals operations and over 90% of its trading volumes comprised CPO and palm olein, which were not subjected to the tax. 'There is no significant impact as 90% of Malaysian CPO production is exported to the European Union as certified products, with less than 2% exported to the United States,' it added. Looking ahead, IOI Corp was actively seeking brownfield upstream land bank in Malaysia and Indonesia and opportunities in specialty oleochemicals for the pharmaceutical and personal care sectors. It also expressed optimism over its 33% stake in a pulp and paper joint venture with Nextgreen Global Bhd to turn oil palm empty fruit bunches into renewable products. 'The first phase of the plant (150,000 tonnes) should be operational by 2028, with potential earnings before interest and tax (ebit) contribution of RM30mil to RM50mil,' RHB Research said. The group's diversification efforts extended to coconut plantations, where 3,500ha had already been planted, targeting 4,600ha in total. This business could bring in RM60mil to RM70mil in ebit at full maturity. RHB Research reiterated its 'buy' call on IOI Corp, maintaining a sum-of-parts-based target price of RM4.30 with a 2% environmental, social and governance premium.
