PBKS vs DC: Delhi finish IPL 2025 with win, add spice to top two race

India Today24-05-2025

Delhi Capitals have added some spice to the top two race as they defeated Punjab Kings by 6 wickets in Jaipur on Saturday, May 24. Sameer Rizvi's 58 off 25 balls was the difference in the end for Delhi, as Punjab wasted their chance to go to the top of the table and edge closer to a top two finish.Rizvi and Karun Nair's 44 were crucial on a track that helped the batters a lot as Delhi ended their campaign with a win as they ended a four-match losing streak. This fixture was initially played in Dharamshala on May 8 when the game had to be stopped due to the increasing cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan. The toss was won by DC in Jaipur amidst not a lot of fanfare on the night. It seemed like the energy was a bit low at the Sawai Mansingh stadium for the match, as RR were already out and the game didn't have a lot of significance for Delhi.advertisementThe Capitals tasted some early success as Priyansh Arya was dismissed early by Mustafizur Rahman. Josh Inglis and Prabhsimran would launch a counter-attack against Delhi as they ensured that PBKS' run-rate remained high. Inglis scored 32 off 12 balls and looked to be on the offensive as the duo added 47 runs before Vipraj Nigam dismissed the Aussie wicketkeeper.
Prabhsimran was joined by Shreyas, who started with a boundary. Prabhsimran was a bit subdued by DC but Kuldeep Yadav gave him a gift in the form of a no-ball and the PBKS batter ensured that the free hit went out of the park. He would get a boundary off Viraj before the DC bowler had his revenge off the next ball. This was a sign for Shreyas to change gears and he greeted Kuldeep with a six in the next over. While Vipraj was able to keep the PBKS batters in check, the rest of the bowlers failed to hit the mark.advertisementKuldeep conceded 36 off his 3 overs with Shreyas taking him on. Mukesh dismissed Nehal Wadhera, but Shreyas continued his fine form with a couple of boundaries. He got a lucky break twice when he was saved by DRS after being given out off the bowling of Mohit Sharma. He was then saved again as Kuldeep dropped a tough chance.PBKS vs DC: Highlights | ScorecardShashank Singh's stay was a very brief one as Stoinis came in to change the game. A wayward 17th over from Mukesh Kumar changed things for Punjab as the Aussie all-rounder hit two sixes and boundary off the Delhi pacer before Shreyas hit a four to get to his fifty.Stoinis got lucky as Mohit dropped a sitter before Kuldeep finally dismissed Shreyas for 53 off 34 balls. Azmatullah Omarzai also fell in the same over but by then, Stoinis got a good measure of things in the middle. The all-rounder, who revealed he battled covid and returned for the tournament, took apart Mohit for 22 off the 19th over. Mustafizur limited the damage in the final over but PBKS ended up with 206 runs in the first innings. The Delhi innings was off to a strong start as KL Rahul and Faf du Plessis scored 50 off just five overs, with the former scoring 35 off 21 balls. Jansen dismissed Rahul in the final over of powerplay but Karun came in and hit the pacer for a six as 61 came off the first six.advertisementHowever, Du Plessis' wicket in the next over put the breaks on the scoring a bit and started to get Punjab into the contest. Sediqullah Atal, who was making his IPL debut, showed promise and started with a six off Jansen but the scoring was being put in check by Punjab.Atal fell at the start of the 11th over as Pravin Dubey made a mark with the ball. Karun, who was back in the Indian team after 3000 days, hit four boundaries on the trot to get the momentum back into the innings. Sameer Rizvi provided good support from the other end as he also started to take on the bowlers. The 14th over of Jansen went for 18 runs as Karun and Rizvi ensured we were set for a grand finish. Harpreet Brar was brought back into the attack and was hit for a boundary by Karun. However, the PBKS spinner got the last laugh as he cleaned up for Karun.advertisementThis brought Stubbs to the middle but Rizvi continued to lead the charge from the other end. The last over from Brar went for 14 runs as DC needed 34 off the last three. Rizvi got a couple of boundaries off Omarzai to make the equation 22 off 12 balls.Shreyas turned to Arshdeep for the penultimate over and Rizvi picked up the knuckleball from the pacer and deposited it into the stands and got to his fifty in 22 balls. A boundary from Stubbs made the equation to be in favor of Delhi as Stoinis bowled the final over. However, a six from Rizvi ended the game for Delhi, who were able to end on a high after a season that promised a lot.Delhi needs to stop losing control in gamesWhile RCB and PBKS will have a chance to win the IPL title for the first time, DC will head home and wait for another season. The Capitals looked like one of the teams to beat after the auction and they were off to a sensational start winning four on the trot. However, where DC have lost games is their inability to go for the kill at the right time and lose complete control of the contest. This happened during their losses to MI this season, where there were points when Delhi were on top. This pattern continued in the loss to KKR and against PBKS, the bowlers lost control and allowed Stoinis to take them apart.advertisementTo be a champion side, this is one aspect that DC will need to solve in IPL 2026. They do have a few good players to bank on with the likes of Rizvi, Ashutosh and Vipraj being ones to build the franchise around for the next few seasons. But it is all about mentality for them next season.PBKS left in a spot with the lossIt seems like no one wants to finish in the top two this season. GT were the first to lose the advantage and then RCB followed. Now PBKS had the chance to take the advantage and they have fluffed it. It was unusual to see the Punjab bowling concede a lot of runs and lose discipline. They did miss the services of Yuzvendra Chahal, who was rested for the game. Now, Punjab have a big test ahead of them in the form of MI, who have been in great form heading into the playoffs. The final four maybe settled but the top two is where everyone wants to be in. PBKS vs MI could prove to be the one that finishes off the debate and it will happen in Jaipur on May 26.Stay updated on IPL 2025 with India Today! Sunil Gavaskar slams uncapped IPL crorepatis, wants BCCI to reward Ranji players better

Sunil Gavaskar has slammed IPL 2025's uncapped crorepatis who only turn up to play league cricket. He urged the BCCI to introduce slab-based Ranji Trophy payments and incentives to stop players from skipping domestic cricket before IPL. read more Legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has shared his strong opinions about how some uncapped players in the Indian Premier League (IPL) are getting crores of rupees without proving themselves at the international stage. In his column for Sportstar, Gavaskar said that it is not always talent that helps these players earn big IPL contracts, adding that it's mostly just luck. Gavaskar slams uncapped IPL crorepatis Sunil Gavaskar did not mention any player by name but some of the young, uncapped crorepatis in IPL 2025 were Priyansh Arya (PBKS), Vaibhav Suryavanshi (RR), Nehal Wadhera (PBKS), Rasikh Dar (RCB), Naman Dhir (MI), Abdul Samad (LSG), Ashutosh Sharma (DC), Anshul Kamboj (CSK), Abhinav Manohar (SRH), Mahipal Lomror (GT), Arshad Khan (GT), Gurnoor Singh Brar (GT), Angkrish Raghuvanshi (KKR), Vaibhav Arora (KKR), Vijaykumar Vyshak (PBKS), Yash Thakur (PBKS), Harpreet Brar (PBKS), Shivam Dubey (RR). 'The argument that it is market forces is not really valid, for more often than not, it is sheer good fortune as some franchises want to take a punt with young talent. Have a look at the uncapped crorepatis throughout the IPL, and you will find that very few have gone on to do big things for India. It's their good luck that has made them the crores that they actually don't deserve,' Gavaskar wrote. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Gavaskar also talked about how some domestic players avoid playing Ranji Trophy matches before the IPL, just to avoid getting injured. According to Gavaskar, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) must work to fix this issue by introducing a better payment system. 'The BCCI has increased match fees, which is good. But if they add a slab system where players who play more matches earn more, it will encourage them to play more Ranji games instead of skipping them,' Gavaskar said. Gavaskar also suggested that the BCCI should introduce better incentives for teams that make the knockout stage of the Ranji Trophy. According to Gavaskar, it will motivate players to play the crucial matches before the IPL. 'If BCCI increases match fees for teams that reach the knockout stages, that will be another great incentive. Players won't withdraw from the tournament fearing injury before the IPL. Money is not a problem for BCCI or its units, so I hope these ideas are considered before the next domestic season,' he added.

IPL 2025

A banker by profession , a sportsman by heart, one who eats, sleeps and breathes cricket. Mantra for life - Play each ball on merits & keep the scoreboard moving. The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season, which concluded on June 3, with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) clinching their maiden title against Punjab Kings (PBKS), was a showcase of emerging talent. Among the standout performers were uncapped Indian players who made significant impacts, proving their potential to be future stars. In this article, I have picked my uncapped XII, backed by key statistics from the season to highlight why they form an exciting combination. Top order: Explosive young guns 1. Vaibhav Suryavanshi (Rajasthan Royals) At just 14 years old, Vaibhav Suryavanshi became the youngest player to make waves in IPL history. Playing for Rajasthan Royals, his explosive batting was a revelation. In 7 innings, Vaibhav scored 252 runs at an average of 36.00 and a staggering strike rate of 206.50, including a century (101 off 38 balls) against Gujarat Titans and a fifty (57 off 33). His fearless approach, highlighted by a strike rate of more than 200 (highest in IPL 2025 for players facing at least 50 balls), made him a standout opener. Despite a duck against Mumbai Indians, his ability to dominate attacks marked him as a prodigy. 2. Priyansh Arya (Punjab Kings) Priyansh Arya, another dynamic opener, from Punjab Kings, was a run-machine at the top. Playing his first-ever IPL, he amassed 475 runs at a strike rate of 179.24 in 17 innings, including a sensational century off 39 balls. His consistency and ability to accelerate made him a key figure in PBKS campaign, challenging some of the top batters for the Orange Cap. Arya's aggressive stroke play and composure under pressure earned him a spot in this squad, forming a formidable opening pair with Suryavanshi. 3. Ayush Mhatre (Chennai Super Kings) Ayush Mhatre, signed as a mid-season replacement for the injured Ruturaj Gaikwad, emerged as a gem for Chennai Super Kings. Batting at the top, Mhatre impressed with his technique and flair, providing much needed firepower to CSK's batting in the powerplay. He scored 240 runs in 7 innings at an outstanding strike rate of 188.97. Middle order: Stability and firepower 4. Prabhsimran Singh – Wicketkeeper (Punjab Kings) Prabhsimran Singh, the wicketkeeper-batter for Punjab Kings, brought dynamism to the side along with his opening partner Priyansh. Known for his aggressive batting, he amassed 549 runs at a strike rate of 160.52 in 17 innings. As a big-hitting keeper-batter he is a vital cog in this line-up, doubling as the team's gloveman. 5. Nehal Wadhera (Punjab Kings) Nehal Wadhera, acquired by Punjab Kings for ₹4.20 crore, is a reliable middle-order batter. His ability to stabilize innings while accelerating when needed makes him a perfect foil at no.5 for the big-hitters above and below him. Wadhera's versatility and clutch performances enabled him to score 369 runs in 15 innings at strike rate of 145.84. 6. Shashank Singh – Captain (Punjab Kings) Shashank Singh continued to be a revelation for Punjab Kings, delivering match-winning knocks under pressure. His all-round batting prowess, combining power and finesse, made him a key middle-order player. He scored 350 runs at a strike rate of 153.50 with 3 fifties which highlights his impact as a finisher and a dependable batter. All-rounders and bowlers: The game-changers 7. Naman Dhir (Mumbai Indians) Naman Dhir, Mumbai Indians' uncapped all-rounder, added depth to the line-up with his batting and occasional bowling. His aggressive approach and ability to contribute in multiple facets made him an asset. He scored 252 runs in 12 innings at a strike rate of 182.60 which makes him an ideal number seven, offering flexibility as a finisher or stabilizer, if required. 8. Vipraj Nigam (Delhi Capitals) Vipraj Nigam, a bowling all-rounder for Delhi Capitals, impressed with both bat and ball. His ability to contribute in crunch situations earned him recognition as a breakout star. He picked up 11 wickets at an economy rate of 9.12 with his leg-spin while contributing 142 runs in 8 innings at a strike rate of 179.74 lower down the order. The bowling arsenal 9. Digvesh Rathi (Lucknow Super Giants) Digvesh Rathi, the leg-spinner for Lucknow Super Giants, was a standout bowler, claiming 14 wickets in 13 matches at an average of 30.64 and an economy rate of 8.25. His signature celebrations became a fan favourite, but his ability to outfox batters with clever variations was his true strength. Rathi's inclusion as the lead spinner in this XI underscores his impact as one of the best uncapped bowlers in IPL 2025. 10. Anshul Kamboj (Chennai Super Kings) Anshul Kamboj, CSK's right-arm pacer, had a decent campaign, taking 8 wickets in 8 matches at an average of 21.50, with a best of 3-13. His ability to bowl at different stages of the game made him a versatile resource. Kamboj's pace and accuracy earn him a spot in this squad. 11. Yash Dayal (Royal Challengers Bengaluru) Yash Dayal, RCB's left-arm pacer, played a pivotal role in their title-winning campaign. He picked up 13 wickets at an average of 36.15, contributing to RCB's success in crucial matches. His ability to bowl tight lines and take wickets in the middle overs made him a reliable option. Dayal's experience and skill make him the spearhead of this bowling attack. Impact substitute: Ashwani Kumar (Mumbai Indians) Ashwani Kumar, Mumbai Indians' left-arm pacer, was a revelation with the ball. In 7 matches, he took 11 wickets at an average of 21.09 with a best of 4-24 on debut. His ability to swing the ball and deliver in high-pressure situations made him a key component of MI's bowling attack. His inclusion as an impact sub adds depth to the bowling unit, ready to replace a batter or bowler as needed. Why this XII stands out This uncapped XII combines youthful exuberance with match-winning potential. The top order, led by Suryavanshi, Arya, and Mhatre, provides explosive starts, while Prabhsimran, Wadhera, and Shashank offer stability and firepower in the middle. Dhir and Nigam add all-round depth, and the bowling attack—featuring Rathi's spin, Dayal's swing, Kamboj's versatility, and Kumar's pace —is well-rounded. With a blend of high strike rates, wicket-taking ability, and clutch performances, this team could rival any IPL side. This uncapped squad encapsulates the spirit of the tournament, showcasing talent that could soon dominate Indian cricket. As these players continue to grow, their IPL 2025 performances will be remembered as the launchpad for their careers.
