Man charged with murder and attempted murder in Downpatrick
The body of Stephen Brannigan, who was aged 56, was found in a house in Marian Park in Downpatrick on Sunday afternoon.
On the same day, Father John Murray was attacked at St Patrick's Church in the Co Down town.
Detectives investigating the murder of Mr Brannigan and the assault on Fr Murray announced on Tuesday evening that they had charged a man to court.
The man, aged 30, has been charged with murder and attempted murder.
He is due to appear before Newtownards Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.
As is normal procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.

She was crossing Via Saponaro when she was struck by the Citroën, which was allegedly stolen from a French man the day before and had a French licence plate. Emergency services arrived at the scene shortly afterwards but could not save her despite their best efforts. Ms De Astis' sons, Gaetano and Filippo, reportedly arrived at the scene of her death shortly after and collected her remaining belongings. The woman was described in Italian media as having a passion for travel and a dedication to her family. She had dinner with her sons on the night before her death, according to La Stampa. Ms De Astis originally hailed from Ruvo di Puglia in southeastern Italy but moved nearly 1,000km north west to Milan, where she built a new life with her husband, who died around 15 years ago. She worked at the Cederna cotton mill for more than 30 years, but left shortly before the factory's closure in 2020. The death has also sparked political reaction in Italy, with the right-wing populist Northern League calling for the parents to be 'severely punished', according to Il Fatto Quotidiano.

THE MOST dangerous towns and cities in the UK have been revealed - and the number one spot may surprise you. New data from the Home Office reveals that more than 5.3 million non-fraud related crimes were recorded in the year ending March 2025 by the 43 domestic police forces in England and Wales. 1 This is down 2% from the previous year, when around 92,000 more crimes were recorded. At the top of the list is Westminster, in London, home to iconic landmarks such as Buckingham Palace and the Houses of Parliament. A total of 423 crimes per every 1000 residents took place last year, which may seem surprising given the wealth of the area. However, huge numbers of tourists visiting the city are targeted by pickpockets and criminals every year, meaning the location is consistently at the top of the list. Camden, which is second on the list, with 195 crimes per 1000 residents, also has a huge number of tourists year round, who are targeted by phone thieves and other criminals. Outside of London, the area with the highest crime rate is Middlesbrough, which has 158.3 crimes per 1,000 people, which equates to almost one in 6 people being victim to a crime. A whopping 23,000 crimes were recorded in the North East town last year, a 5% fall from the previous year. Following Middlesbrough, Blackpool has 154.4 crimes per 1000 people, slightly higher than the posh borough of Kensington and Chelsea, which has 154.2. Below that, Manchester has 152.4 crimes per 1000, and Hartlepool has 141.5. Rounding off the top 10, Islington in London has 140.8 per 1000, Bristol has 132.3 and the London Borough of Southwark has 127.6. The figures also show that 7.8 percent of over 16s experienced domestic abuse last year, whilst 2.9% experienced stalking. 1.9% of people experienced sexual assault, and 8.6% of people experienced stalking. There were 535 homicides recorded last year, the lowest since the year ending March 2014, when there were 533 offences. Offences involving knives or sharp instruments decreased by 1% across the UK last year to 53,047. However, police forces saw increases and some saw decreases.

Mayor calls for DC to become 51st state after Trump's National Guard crackdown
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has revived calls for the District of Columbia to become America's 51st state in response to President Donald Trump 's move to federalize Washington's police force. Trump announced a huge crackdown on street crime in the nation's capital on Monday, insisting it was necessary to safeguard the public from 'violent gangs and bloodthirsty criminals, roving mobs of wild youth, drugged-out maniacs and homeless people,' despite the official statistics for the last two years showing a steep decline in offenses. The National Guard duly hit the streets on Tuesday night but, for Bowser, their presence is not necessary. 'We have seen a precipitous lessening of crime in the city, violent crime, especially after a post-Covid spike that we acknowledge, and we got after, and we drove down the numbers in 2023,' the mayor said on The Breakfast Club radio show on Tuesday. 'We reported last year the lowest level of violent crime in 30 years. So, we're not taking our foot off the gas. 'We're continuing to work, but we think that this action kind of plays into his narrative about cities, about using force, about being tough on crime, and I can say a little bit more about why D.C. is different, but it's times like this when America needs to know why your nation's capital, a place where 700,000 taxpaying Americans live, should be the 51st state.'
