Jeff Gordon addresses Chase Elliott's 'frustrating' start to 2025 NASCAR season
Chase Elliott has dealt with a frustrating beginning to the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season, by his standard.
The Hendrick Motorsports driver has not recorded a win in 2025 and has watched two of his teammates, William Byron and Kyle Larson, earn victories with another teammate Alex Bowman in contention for a win last week at Homestead-Miami Speedway before Larson sped by for the victory.
Byron (244), Larson (208) and Bowman (205) occupy the top three spots in the NASCAR Cup Series standings. Elliott (181) is sixth.
Jeff Gordon, four-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and current vice Chairman of Hendrick Motorsports, said in a postrace press conference at Homestead that Elliott's early-season frustration can stem from a strong offseason and a solid preseason exhibition victory at The Clash at Bowman Gray Stadium.
"I feel like they came into the season with a lot of momentum as well and started strong, meaning just you could just sense that they've got a lot of confidence and coming to the racetrack ready to go." Gordon said. "The last couple of weeks probably were a little bit frustrating for them."
"They're a really solid team," Gordon continued. "Just a lot of depth and a lot of belief in one another. You know, you've got to get through the rocky times."
Gordon added that when a team is struggling similar to the No. 9 team, led by crew chief Alan Gustafson, the tendency is to measure up to what other teams are doing. So far this season, they're measuring against teammates.
"So, if you're not achieving what you want to achieve, then you know you've got to go to work, and you know that you're not meeting expectations," Gordon said. "(Gustafson and Elliott) have high expectations. It's not unusual for them to get down a little bit on, 'Hey, this isn't good enough,' but I've seen them react really well and positively to that too."

A Nationwide Celebration of Youth Sports at DICK'S House of Sport
Originally published on DICK'S Sporting Goods Sideline Report June 11 marked a historic first for DICK'S Sporting Goods and The DICK'S Sporting Goods Foundation. Twenty DICK'S House of Sport locations nationwide came alive with energy, excitement and sport for the inaugural 'Sports Matter Day of Play'. As part of the festivities The DICK'S Foundation invited youth organizations from communities across the country to participate in a day dedicated to celebrating play, access and opportunity in sports at their local DICK'S House of Sport location. This first-of-its-kind event was designed to give young athletes the chance to explore and experience new sports. From soccer drills in Boston to softball swings in Miami, each House of Sport became a vibrant, hands-on arena where kids could discover the joy of play. Designed to be inclusive and engaging, the activities encouraged curiosity and confidence in a variety of sports. For many, it was their very first time holding a lacrosse stick, swinging a golf club or rock climbing with encouragement from local coaches and mentors. 'There is nothing better than seeing kids light up when they get to play a sport for the first time,' said Rick Jordan, VP of The DICK'S Sporting Goods Foundation. 'Thats what the day was all about, getting to create those moments and showing young athletes that they belong on the field, the court or wherever their passion leads them.' In addition to a fun day of play at House of Sport, participating organizations also received a Sports Matter grant from The DICK'S Sporting Goods Foundation, to help ensure that their vital work in the community can continue to thrive. The grants underscore The Foundation's ongoing mission to provide access and equity in youth sports, one athlete at a time. Since 2014, DICK'S Sporting Goods and The DICK'S Foundation has helped over 3 million kids and committed over $100 million to support young athletes with equipment, registration fees, league costs and playing fields through its Sports Matter Program.'To have our organization recognized and supported today means a lot to us,' said Jamaal Wornum, CEO and Founder of One Love Sports Academy in Boston. Denny Hamlin to miss NASCAR's first international race after birth of son
MEXICO CITY (AP) — Denny Hamlin will miss NASCAR's first international race of the modern era to remain in North Carolina following the birth of his child. Ryan Truex will replace him Sunday in Mexico City. Advertisement 'See you guys in Pocono,' Hamlin posted on social media. 'We are happy to announce the birth of our son. Everyone is doing well. My main priority is to be here at home for Jordan and our family over the next few days when she is able to go home and we transition to life as a family of five.' Hamlin and fiancee Jordan Fish now have three children, two daughters and a son born Wednesday. Hamlin had been on baby watch the last 12 days as Fish went nearly two weeks past her predicted due date. He had planned to get out of the car at Michigan last Sunday if she went into labor early in the race, but when the first stage passed with no word, he went on to score his third win of the season. The victory was the 57th of his career and made him the all-time winningest driver at Joe Gibbs Racing. Through 15 races this season, Hamlin ranks third in the overall Cup Series standings. Advertisement Truex, younger brother of former JGR full-time driver Martin Truex Jr., is Gibbs' reserve driver. His last Cup Series start was in 2014 and he has 26 starts at NASCAR's top level. Hamlin will need NASCAR to grant him a waiver to be eligible to compete in the playoffs for the Cup Series championship. NASCAR during the offseason tightened the rules for granting waivers, but said it would permit a driver skipping an event for the birth of a child. The 44-year-old Hamlin will snap his streak of 406 consecutive starts. Hamlin last missed a race in 2014 at California Speedway because of an eye irritation. ___ AP auto racing:
