Alex Bowman admits he "choked that one away" in tough Homestead loss

Motorsport photo Alex Bowman started Sunday's race from pole position and was looking to follow the example set by Tyler Reddick last year as the latest driver to win this race from the front of the grid. Bowman led 43 laps and was collecting stage points throughout the day. On the final restart with just over 50 laps remaining, Bowman was in fourth but quickly made it three-wide for the race lead. While Bubba Wallace escaped and drove away, he was able to run him back down within 20 laps and power into the race lead. Unfortunately for him, his teammate Kyle Larson was making an extremely high line work, running right up against the outside wall. Advertisement Bowman tried to counter as his lead evaporated, but it didn't work, as the wall grabbed him, slowing him down at the exit of Turn 4, coming to six to go. That made Larson's job easy as he drove on by and never looked back. "I guess I choked that one away," lamented Bowman after the race. "Saw the 5 [Larson] coming, so moved around a little bit. Not when he passed me, but the time before that I hit it hard with the right front and ended up just bending something enough that I lost a lot of right front feel and then I pulled it off the wall too far right there, and ended up hitting the fence pretty bad. "So I hate that for this Ally 48 group. They deserve better than that. Just a couple of mistakes there. I felt like we were okay all day. That last run was the best we were ... Hate it for Mr. Hendrick. Congrats to Kyle. We're going to try get another one this week." Jeff Gordon addresses Chase Elliott's 'frustrating' start to 2025 NASCAR season

Chase Elliott has dealt with a frustrating beginning to the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season, by his standard. The Hendrick Motorsports driver has not recorded a win in 2025 and has watched two of his teammates, William Byron and Kyle Larson, earn victories with another teammate Alex Bowman in contention for a win last week at Homestead-Miami Speedway before Larson sped by for the victory. Byron (244), Larson (208) and Bowman (205) occupy the top three spots in the NASCAR Cup Series standings. Elliott (181) is sixth. Jeff Gordon, four-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and current vice Chairman of Hendrick Motorsports, said in a postrace press conference at Homestead that Elliott's early-season frustration can stem from a strong offseason and a solid preseason exhibition victory at The Clash at Bowman Gray Stadium. "I feel like they came into the season with a lot of momentum as well and started strong, meaning just you could just sense that they've got a lot of confidence and coming to the racetrack ready to go." Gordon said. "The last couple of weeks probably were a little bit frustrating for them." "They're a really solid team," Gordon continued. "Just a lot of depth and a lot of belief in one another. You know, you've got to get through the rocky times." Gordon added that when a team is struggling similar to the No. 9 team, led by crew chief Alan Gustafson, the tendency is to measure up to what other teams are doing. So far this season, they're measuring against teammates. "So, if you're not achieving what you want to achieve, then you know you've got to go to work, and you know that you're not meeting expectations," Gordon said. "(Gustafson and Elliott) have high expectations. It's not unusual for them to get down a little bit on, 'Hey, this isn't good enough,' but I've seen them react really well and positively to that too." Chase Elliott and Hendrick Motorsports shared on social media Tuesday that Elliott will be running a throwback scheme honoring Ken Schrader's No. 25 Kodiak Chevrolet from 1994. Chase Elliott has three top 10 finishes in six points races so far this season. His only top five finish was a season-best fourth place at the NASCAR COTA race after he was spun out on the first corner of the first lap. Elliott won the preseason Busch Light Clash at Bowman Gray Stadium, but that race was an exhibition. In his career, Elliott has 19 wins, 105 top 5 and 174 top 10 finishes in his career. A Late Restart Ended Kyle Larson's Chances of a Three-Race Weekend Sweep, Finally Rewards Justin Allgaier

Kyle Larson was cruising towards his second win of the weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway Saturday evening when a caution came out with eight laps to go. As a Cup Series invader of NASCAR's lower series, Larson was attempting to sweep the weekend, winning Friday night in the Craftsman Truck Race, Saturday in the Xfinity Series Race, and in the Cup Series on Sunday. After dominating the race, leading 132 of the first 198 laps, and lapping everyone up to Larson, he would have to defend the Xfinity series regulars and ultimately have his chance at a weekend sweep placed in danger when Taylor Gray spun with eight laps to go. .@J_Allgaier comes through in the clutch!!!Homestead-Miami win ✅Dash 4 Cash win ✅Watch the entire overtime and the thrilling finish! — The CW Sports (@TheCW_Sports) March 22, 2025 After being bumped by Sam Mayer on the restart, the Cup Series Champion would finish fourth ending his chance of becoming only the second driver to sweep a three-series NASCAR weekend. Fellow Kyle, Kyle Busch is the only driver to accomplish this feat doing so at Bristol Motor Speedway twice, once in 2010 and again in 2017. Larson was slow to the restart zone, leading Mayer to mistime his start and get into the Cup Series Champion's bumper. A frustrated Larson wanted to make it clear, after finishing fourth that he didn't choke the win away from himself and blames Mayer's mistimed start for his loss. "I know it looks like I choked another one away, but I can't go when my tires are off the ground," Larson said. "The No. 41 lagged back and slammed the shit out of me." This gave Austin Hill an advantage on the restart as the bottom line fell back. Justin Allgaier was 20 seconds behind the leader before the caution had all but kissed his chances of finally winning at Homestead goodbye when the shuffle gave him an opening to race by Hill and take the lead. Allgaier, coming off a win last weekend at Las Vegas, was nearly as dominant at Phoenix Raceway two weeks ago as Larson was this evening before a late-stage restart burned the defending Xfinity Series Champion. This week, the restart gave what it once took away; Allgaier has been good at the track but doesn't have the finishes to show for it, never recording a top five. He told CW's Kim Coon on Friday that this is one of the tracks that he wants to win the most at because of how many times it's slipped through his fingers. Over the radio, Allgaier told his crew, "I just wanted to run good at Homestead one time."
