A Late Restart Ended Kyle Larson's Chances of a Three-Race Weekend Sweep, Finally Rewards Justin Allgaier

Yahoo22-03-2025

Kyle Larson was cruising towards his second win of the weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway Saturday evening when a caution came out with eight laps to go. As a Cup Series invader of NASCAR's lower series, Larson was attempting to sweep the weekend, winning Friday night in the Craftsman Truck Race, Saturday in the Xfinity Series Race, and in the Cup Series on Sunday.
After dominating the race, leading 132 of the first 198 laps, and lapping everyone up to Larson, he would have to defend the Xfinity series regulars and ultimately have his chance at a weekend sweep placed in danger when Taylor Gray spun with eight laps to go.

After being bumped by Sam Mayer on the restart, the Cup Series Champion would finish fourth ending his chance of becoming only the second driver to sweep a three-series NASCAR weekend. Fellow Kyle, Kyle Busch is the only driver to accomplish this feat doing so at Bristol Motor Speedway twice, once in 2010 and again in 2017.
Larson was slow to the restart zone, leading Mayer to mistime his start and get into the Cup Series Champion's bumper. A frustrated Larson wanted to make it clear, after finishing fourth that he didn't choke the win away from himself and blames Mayer's mistimed start for his loss.
"I know it looks like I choked another one away, but I can't go when my tires are off the ground," Larson said. "The No. 41 lagged back and slammed the shit out of me."
This gave Austin Hill an advantage on the restart as the bottom line fell back. Justin Allgaier was 20 seconds behind the leader before the caution had all but kissed his chances of finally winning at Homestead goodbye when the shuffle gave him an opening to race by Hill and take the lead.
Allgaier, coming off a win last weekend at Las Vegas, was nearly as dominant at Phoenix Raceway two weeks ago as Larson was this evening before a late-stage restart burned the defending Xfinity Series Champion. This week, the restart gave what it once took away; Allgaier has been good at the track but doesn't have the finishes to show for it, never recording a top five. He told CW's Kim Coon on Friday that this is one of the tracks that he wants to win the most at because of how many times it's slipped through his fingers.
Over the radio, Allgaier told his crew, "I just wanted to run good at Homestead one time."

Daniel Suarez faces challenge in Mexico with some team members on delayed flights

MEXICO CITY — Ahead of arguably the biggest race of Daniel Suarez's Cup career, he will have only five crew members working on his car during today's two practice sessions because of travel issues involving some of the planes NASCAR chartered. Crew chief Matt Swiderski told NBC Sports that the No. 99 team has only him, the team's car chief, interior specialist, engine tuner and tire specialist for today's sessions. There are 20 people on the crew roster for Suarez's team. This weekend marks the inaugural Cup points race at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. Suarez has talked about how much it means to have a Cup points race in his native country. He will be the only Mexican driver in the Cup race. Suarez is without team members today because two of the flights NASCAR chartered to take Cup and Xfinity teams Thursday to Mexico City were grounded. One had an engine issue at takeoff. Swiderski said he was on that flight. Swiderski said when a replacement plane arrived, the crew could not continue because they would exceed their hours. Dustin Long, Swiderski said the team went back to the shop and began to prioritize who they needed at the track. Trackhouse Racing got 14 crew members on a private plane. Among those left behind were the engineers. They will not arrive until Saturday so they can be at the shop when Cup practice takes place today. Swiderski said they will borrow spotters from Xfinity teams to help with the practice session. Nate Ryan, Swiderski said he got about 90 minutes of sleep before returning to the airport for a flight that left Charlotte, North Carolina, at 5 a.m. ET. Swiderski noted that with only five people, it will be difficult to make changes throughout the practice as quickly as they would normally do so. 'The speed that you can make changes is a performance gain … making one more run we'll be a little it slower just being down a couple of guys,' he said.

Luis Suarez predicts MLS ‘surprise results' against tired European teams at Club World Cup

Inter Miami striker Luis Suarez believes European clubs are likely to suffer from fatigue at the Club World Cup and has predicted some 'surprise results'. The former Barcelona forward says the likes of Champions League-winners Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid and Manchester City are the favorites for the 32-team tournament in the U.S., but suggested MLS teams could take advantage of their tired legs after a 'long season' across the European calendar. Advertisement Miami, who are fronted by Suarez and Lionel Messi, face Al Ahly in the tournament's inaugural match at Hard Rock Stadium, home of the NFL's Miami Dolphins — on Saturday night — and will also play Porto and Palmeiras in Group A. 'Obviously the European clubs are more organized because of the club structure and the players that they have,' Suarez said on Friday. 'We should also note that they're coming here after a long season. It's getting longer for them. There are many tournaments that they've had to play and perhaps they'll arrive with some fatigue. 'But players will always want to play against Atletico Madrid, Paris (Saint-Germain) that have won it all. There's (Manchester) City, (Real) Madrid, Juventus, Inter (Milan), Bayern (Munich) are all really strong teams but I think there will be some surprise results. 'Let's hope it comes from our end but we know how difficult it's going to be.' The Uruguayan added: 'First of all, we have to enjoy this opportunity to play in a Club World Cup. 'Some of the more veteran players on the team have already had that fortune, and the players who haven't should try to enjoy it and take advantage of the important showcase that it is in order to grow as a player and show their quality. 'That's important if they want to continue to develop as footballers.' Miami's younger core includes Venezuelan international Telasco Segovia, 22, Federico Redondo, 22, academy product Benjamin Cremaschi, 20, among others. Suarez and Messi, along with Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, are the elder statesmen of a Miami team that has been through growing pains since their launch in 2020. The young club has tasted some success since Messi and his former Barcelona team-mates came to MLS. In 2024 they won the Supporters' Shield which is awarded to the club that earns the most points in the MLS regular season. Miami also set the points record that season, before a shock elimination in the first round of the league play-offs. Advertisement In May, Busquets told DAZN: 'It's clear that we're not at the level to compete at the Club World Cup.' Head coach Javier Mascherano has echoed that sentiment lately, notably during a stretch of poor form in April and May that saw Miami win just once in eight matches. Asked about Busquets' comments, Suarez said: 'Competing is in our DNA and we'll always have that, but you can't always win, can you? 'Maybe things won't go the way we want them to but we're going to try to play as well as possible, compete in every match and play for the best result. That's what we want. 'We understand the difficulties that a tournament like this can present, seeing as how the biggest clubs in the world are here. 'We know it's going to be difficult. We'll do the best we possibly can.' Despite Suarez's hope that Miami's young players will step up during the Club World Cup, the tournament will give global viewers a glimpse of how his former Barcelona teammates are fairing in their late thirties. Messi has 10 goals and 6 assists in 13 MLS games, while Busquets remains an important tempo-setter and a key organizational piece in Mascherano's midfield. Alba has continued to be played as an attacking full-back. Meanwhile 38-year-old Suarez, after scoring 20 goals last season, has not been as effective in front of goal in 2025, finding the net just five times in 13 appearances in MLS — but registering seven assists. He hopes the four veterans can take advantage of their history and intimacy to deliver at the tournament. 'We're lucky enough to know each other very well,' Suarez said. 'On the pitch and obviously off it, everyone knows the relationship that we all have, but on the pitch it gives us an advantage. 'There are times that we know where the other is moving without even looking. That's a benefit of knowing each other so well, of playing together for so long. We have to take advantage of that.'

NASCAR ran into problems on Thursday when it tried moving teams and equipment into Mexico City for this weekend's race at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. Several personnel, including the Haas Factory Team, reported hurdles and delays in departure, a problem that has affected the race weekend's schedule. A technical problem on an aircraft meant NASCAR personnel had to find a plane that was authorized to fly to the race venue. According to journalist Matt Weaver, the plane aborted takeoff after the captain reported a suspected bird hit that took out the second engine. He stated on X: The captain of a grounded plane carrying NASCAR industry people to Mexico as it aborted a takeoff said "I dont know if we took a bird but engine 2 blew." The industry personnel are off that plane and have their luggage back. — Matt Weaver (@MattWeaverRA) June 12, 2025 "The captain of a grounded plane carrying NASCAR industry people to Mexico as it aborted a takeoff said "I dont know if we took a bird but engine 2 blew." NASCAR confirmed that the Xfinity Series will be permitted to carry out all track sessions on Saturday. The time for the Cup Series qualifying and the NASCAR Mexico Series race was also revised. FOX Sports' Bob Pockrass posted the updated schedule for the NASCAR race weekend in Mexico on X.
