Michigan State hockey commit Mason West gets picked in first round of 2025 NHL Entry Draft

USA Today8 hours ago

Michigan State hockey's newest commit came from Edina (MN) forward Mason West. The 2007-born player was a massive recruiting win for Adam Nightingale and his staff.
West, coming off of his time at Edina High School will be heading to the USHL to play for the Fargo Force. Before then though, his prowess was recognized.
The 6-foot-6 forward was selected at No. 29 in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft by the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday night, going in the first round.
West is not expected to join Michigan State until the 2026-27 season, but he is a prospect that Michigan State fans should be very excited for, and this NHL draft selection shows that.

NHL fans ridiculed awkward 'Draft House' format for decentralized event

Drafted players meeting their bosses in the 'draft house' The NHL tried something new this year with the 2025 draft that, well, fell flat: the league "decentralized" the draft, with the prospects in one place (Peacock Theater in Los Angeles) and teams in their own war rooms. The picks were announced, the prospect would get a sweater with his name on it and then it was off to something called "NHL Draft House," in which the newest player for the franchise would greet his team's front office. NHL FIRST ROUND GRADES: Our take on every pick Fans HATED it. Assuming the league hears this feedback, it might be a one-year thing. Fans hated the decentralized format and awkward NHL Draft House: The NHL "Draft House" experience is only getting worse. Picks entering the NHL 'Draft House' to meet their team This format for the #NHLDraft is awkward on so many levels. Trying something new is good but this is bad on so many levels. The suits talking to the players in the draft house is brutal. Let's not do this again. 'The Draft House' is potentially the worst idea a sports organization has ever had 'Let's go to the Draft house' Drafted players meeting their bosses in the 'draft house'

Former Spartan James Piot makes the cut at the Rocket Classic

On Thursday, the Rocket Classic commenced for it seventh edition at the Detroit Golf Club, bringing the PGA Tour back to Detroit. A late addition to the field, former Spartan and United States Amateur champion James Piot was added thanks to a sponsors exemption. He took advantage of his opportunity. After a two-under day on Thursday, the former Spartan rifled a four-under round on Friday, setting himself up at six-under. That number was good enough to make the cut and the weekend at the Rocket Classic. The made cut for Piot is his first career made cut on the PGA Tour. A former LIV golfer, he made history by playing on the PGA Tour after playing for LIV, but now, he makes personal history for himself. Piot will look to make another move up the leaderboard on moving day on Saturday when he tees off at 7:55 a.m., playing in a group alongside Paul Peterson. 2027 5-star LB praises Texas A&M DC Jay Bateman, sees Aggies as a future option

Former Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten's NFL career ended after the 2020 season. Since his retirement, the future Hall of Famer has been one of the top high school coaches in Texas, having coached at Liberty Christian since 2021. Like every Father's dream, Witten has been able to coach his two sons, including 2027 five-star linebacker Cooper Witten, who Texas A&M has heavily recruited. Witten is one of the best athletes in the 2027 cycle, and to no surprise, he could also play tight end at the next level due to his impressive speed and catch radius. However, he may be too solid a defender not to keep at linebacker. On Friday, KBTX reporter Tyler Shaw caught up with the younger Witten during a preseason summer scrimmage, where he praised Texas A&M defensive coordinator Jay Bateman, who is also one of the top linebacker coaches and developers in the country. "I like (Texas) A&M a lot. Their defensive coordinator, Jay Bateman is a great coach, great guy to talk to, etc." Witten stated. "I really think he could develop me and make me into the best player I can be." This is high praise for Bateman, who, despite losing his play-calling duties this offseason, has continued to be one of the best recruiters in the country, helping land several high-ranking 2026 prospects, including five-star defensive end Tristian Given and five-star cornerback Brandon Arrington. At linebacker, former Florida LB Scooby Williams is coming off his best collegiate season, while junior Taurean York is one his way to becoming a potential first-round pick after the 2025 season. Cooper Witten was elite on both sides of the ball during his 2024 junior season, recording 45 tackles, one sack, 5 INTs (2 return touchdowns), six pass breakups, and one safety on defense. Witten hauled in 15 receptions for 263 yards and seven touchdowns as a tight end/receiver. According to 247Sports, Cooper Witten is currently positioned as the 24th-ranked prospect in the 2027 class, the No. 1-ranked linebacker, and the 4th-ranked prospect in Texas.
