Who's on first? It appears it won't be Kristian Campbell in the near future
'It's nothing we're planning on doing [in games] now,' Cora said of having Campbell play first.
Campbell, who won AL Rookie of the Month honors in April after hitting .301/.407/.495, entered Monday hitting .140/.187/.174 since the beginning of May. Was there any chance Campbell's introduction to a new position contributed to his struggles?

'Hopefully. I hope [having him not work at first base] works today. I'll be like, 'Hey, blame me [for his struggles],' ' said Cora. 'But I think there's more than that.'

Cora pointed to the fact that Campbell's offensive struggles started before he began doing pregame work at first base on May 16. His groundball rate spiked and his walk rate cratered in early May. But Cora characterized Campbell's struggles as normal rookie growing pains.
'We still believe in the swing, we still believe in the character,' said Cora. 'Obviously, we're going to go through stretches like this. And I lived it before with
Jarren
[
Duran
], with [
Triston
]
Casas
, with
Dustin Pedroia
. … So [we] just try to help him out and keep the confidence up. Just remind him that he's still a good player, regardless of what the numbers said so far this season.'

Gonzalez, who was hitting .308/.362/.423 when he landed on the injured list, was in line to serve as the primary Sox first baseman when
Triston Casas
sustained his season-ending injury. But now the allocation of playing time has been redrawn, with Toro (.310/.310/.534) expected to get most of the starts against righties.
Gonzalez was simply happy to return rather than bemoaning a missed chance at playing time.
'I'm obviously super ecstatic to be back with the boys, just being able to contribute in any way,' Gonzalez said.
With Gonzalez activated,
Nate Eaton
was optioned to Triple A Worcester.
Devers takes grounders
For the first time in a month,
Rafael Devers
was seen taking pregame infield grounders. He did so on the left side of the infield. Anything to that?
'I didn't know,' Cora said of his designated hitter donning a glove
Jansen returns
Kenley Jansen
, who had 56 saves for the Red Sox from 2023-24, returned to Fenway with the Angels.
'I got the chance to put [a Sox] uniform on for two years. These fans are awesome; that's one thing I can I say.' Jansen said. 'Yeah, we didn't go to the playoffs, but I had a blast to play here.'
Jansen, 37, hopes to play another few seasons.
'My goal is to get to 40,' he said. 'It's a game that I love and I still love doing it.' … The Angels placed third baseman
Yoán Moncada
(right knee inflammation) and righthander
Robert Stephenson
(biceps inflammation) on the IL and recalled outfielder
Matthew Lugo
and lefthander
Sam Aldegheri
.

Lugo, 24, was a second-round pick by the Red Sox in 2019. He was one of four prospects traded to the Angels last July for reliever
Luis Garcia
.
'This was not how I expected to get to Fenway Park for a game, but I'll take it,' said Lugo.
Crawford steps up workload
Kutter Crawford
(right knee) is up to four simulated innings in live batting practice sessions, and is scheduled to begin a minor league rehab assignment this week. He'll be stretched out as a starter, Cora said …
Tanner Houck
is throwing on flat ground, but there's no timetable for him to throw off a mound. …
Masataka Yoshida
is now throwing at 75 feet … Sox minor league catcher/first baseman
Brooks Brannon
was named Minor League Baseball's High-A player of the week after going 11 for 21 with a .524/.524/1.048 line with two homers and six extra-base hits for the Greenville Drive … Monday was Lou Gehrig Day across MLB, with players, managers, coaches, and umpires wearing a '4' decal on their uniforms in an effort to raise awareness and provide research funds to combat ALS. Prior to Monday's game at Fenway, the Red Sox recognized families from across New England affected by the disease.

Red Sox Trade Idea Lands Ryan Mountcastle After Jarren Duran News
Red Sox Trade Idea Lands Ryan Mountcastle After Jarren Duran News originally appeared on Athlon Sports. It remains uncertain what the Boston Red Sox plan to do heading into the trade deadline at the end of July. For a Red Sox organization that had an opportunity to win the division entering the year, at least on paper, there's a scenario where they could be buyers, despite playing like one of the worst teams in the American League East. Advertisement If the Red Sox look to make a move, it has to come at first base. The team has been searching for a first baseman over the past few weeks and has attempted to fill in the gaps with some average players, to say the least. Searching for a potential option, Mike Cole of NESN recently proposed a trade idea for the Red Sox to acquire Ryan Mountcastle of the Baltimore Orioles, adding that Jim Bowden of The Athletic stated Mountcastle could be available. Boston Red Sox left fielder Jarren Duran (16) bats against the Baltimore Orioles during the first inning at Fenway Fluharty-Imagn Images 'Mountcastle probably makes more sense as a low-risk move. The problem, as Bowden notes, is he's injured. The 28-year-old is on the injured list with a hamstring injury, and those can linger. He's a right-handed bat, though, so he'd help balance the batting order when healthy. He has seen his power numbers dip over the years, and he has struggled to replicate his rookie season in 2021 when he hit 33 home runs and drove in 89 runs,' Cole wrote. Advertisement Mountcastle is dealing with an injury, but when he's been healthy, there have been periods throughout his career where he looks to be a very good player. His best season came during the 2021 campaign, when he hit 33 home runs. After hitting just 18 in 2023 and 13 in 2024, there are questions about whether his power is what it used to be. However, he still managed to post an OPS+ above 110 in both of those seasons. Former Texas A&M legend, current NFL head coach awarded for lifetime achievements
Former Texas A&M legend, current NFL head coach awarded for lifetime achievements Former Texas A&M legend and current Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell was honored with the Lettermen's Association 2025 Lifetime Achievement Award on Monday for his contributions as an Aggie and his achievements as a coach. The Texas A&M football program put together a surprise for Campbell, as he thought he was only joining his former strength coach Mike Clark for an "interview" about his time playing in Bryan-College Station, Texas. Little did he know, awaiting him would be several of his former coaches, teammates and players from throughout his career to congratulate him on the outstanding honor. Campbell played tight end for the Aggies from 1995-1998, hauling in 27 receptions for 314 yards and three touchdowns in the Maroon and White. Following the end of his collegiate career, he was drafted by the New York Giants in the third round of the 1999 NFL Draft. The Clifton, Texas, native spent stints with the Dallas Cowboys, Detroit Lions, and New Orleans Saints before transitioning into his career as a coach. He started as an intern with the Miami Dolphins, where he quickly found his footing. After the Dolphins fired former head coach Joe Philbin, Campbell was anointed the interim head coach. Campbell returned to New Orleans in 2016 to become the new assistant head coach and tight ends coach, before he was hired by the Lions in 2021 to become the 28th head coach of the franchise. Since then, the former Aggie has broken the mold in Detroit to form one of the powerhouse teams in the NFC. The Lions have reached unprecedented heights over the last few seasons under Campbell, which included securing a 12-5 record to tie the franchise's single-season wins record, claiming the first divisional title since 1993 and advancing to the first NFC Championship since 1991. His gritty mentality, determination and dedication to the game of football have been well-received by the Lions fanbase. However, those traits and Campbell's contributions on and off the gridiron at Texas A&M are what led to this moment. Lions' Dan Campbell embracing difficult 2025 schedule
The post Lions' Dan Campbell embracing difficult 2025 schedule appeared first on ClutchPoints. Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell have completely transformed the franchise's culture in four year's time, which has resulted in an NFC Championship appearance and two consecutive divisional titles. But newfound success comes at a price, and it will be paid through a highly demanding schedule. Advertisement In addition to facing the three other seemingly formidable NFC North squads two times each, the Lions will battle the Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Rams, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the teams from the NFC East and AFC North divisions during the 2025-26 campaign. They are tied with the Chicago Bears for the second-hardest strength of schedule, trailing only the New York Giants. On paper, Detroit's road back to the No. 1 seed in the conference is extremely arduous. Campbell has no gripes, though. On the contrary, he thinks the schedule will be advantageous for the Lions' ultimate goal. 'It's awesome, man,' Campbell said, via Pro Football Talk's Josh Alper. (originally Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press). 'I mean, to me, by the end of the year we ought to be just scarred up. We should be scarred up and ready to go, hardened for battle and ready for the playoffs. And there'll be nothing easy about it. You still, just to get through our own division is going to be brutal, but it's the right kind of brutal.' That is one sick man. Lions are ready to rumble The impassioned and effective leader introduced himself to the fan base by talking about biting kneecaps. His fighting spirit has only intensified during his prosperous run with the Lions. While others bemoan certain aspects of the schedule, Campbell is intent on turning a rough hand into a jackpot-winning one. Considering what the squad must overcome, no other mentality will suffice. Advertisement One did not need to look at the schedule to realize that Detroit will encounter a large amount of adversity in 2025-26. The Lions lost offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn to head coaching jobs this offseason, reside in what could be the deepest division and must carry with them the memory of another tough playoffs exit. When accepting and preparing for such a trying set of circumstances, running the gauntlet does not seem so intimidating. The keys to conquering the campaign will likely include a dialed-in Jared Goff, a healthy Aidan Hutchinson, a full-blown Jameson Williams explosion and an improved secondary. This franchise knows what it means to suffer. It would be quite poetic if schedule-induced anguish served as the impetus for a long-awaited Super Bowl breakthrough. The Lions will charge right into the brutality this September, starting with a road matchup versus the Green Bay Packers.
