Large wildfire near Jerusalem forces evacuations, closes major highway
Jerusalem, May 1 (UNI) Israel has raised its emergency alert to the highest level and appealed for international assistance as fast-spreading wildfires erupted in the hills west of Jerusalem on Wednesday.
Footage shared on social media showed drivers fleeing on foot as flames and thick black smoke loomed in the distance.
The Fire and Rescue Services said about 120 teams from across the country, supported by firefighting planes and helicopters, were deployed to contain the flames, and another 22 teams were on their way.
Five communities were evacuated, and others were instructed to prepare for possible evacuation. A section of the Jerusalem-Tel Aviv highway was closed by the police.
The Magen David Adom medical emergency service said in a statement that medics were treating 12 people for mild smoke inhalation, including two babies.
Fire and Rescue Authority Commissioner Eyal Caspi said he had activated the fire service's national emergency plans and raised the alert level to its highest. "Following a situational assessment, firefighting teams were being mobilized from all districts nationwide," he said.
Eyal Cohen, deputy commander of the Jerusalem District of the Fire and Rescue Authority, said Israel had requested firefighting assistance from regional neighbors. State-owned Kan TV reported that the countries include Greece, Cyprus, Croatia, and Italy.
The Israel Defense Forces said the military has sent forces to firefighting and evacuation, adding that "aerial support has also been deployed to provide a real-time operational picture."
Unseasonably high temperatures of around 35 degrees Celsius, combined with wind gusts of up to 70 km per hour, were fanning the flames and complicating firefighting efforts, officials said.
As Israel marks Memorial Day for fallen soldiers from sunset, April 29, to nightfall, April 30 this year, ceremonies at the Latrun Armored Corps Memorial were cancelled due to the wildfire. The Defense Ministry urged the public to avoid traveling to military cemeteries, where tens of thousands are expected to gather for commemorative events.

The day temperature is likely to stay between 33 and 35 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, but it may reach up to 40 degrees Celsius by Friday. Night temperatures also remained low, making it the 59th coldest May on record. The unusual weather patterns resulted in substantial rainfall across almost all states, with numerous instances of heavy and very heavy rainfall. The IMD reported 1053 incidents of heavy rain (64.5–115.5 mm), 262 incidents of very heavy rain (115.6–204.5 mm), and 39 incidents of exceptionally heavy rain (more than 204.5 mm), marking the highest figures in the last five years, with the exception of 2021. Ahmedabad weather today: Rain lashes parts of city despite low chances
Rains lashed parts of Gujarat's Ahmedabad on Tuesday, after the city witnessed partly cloudy skies. Hot and humid conditions persisted throughout the day in the city, with temperatures touching a sweltering 38 degree Celsius and humidity at 42 per cent. This comes after the chances of precipitation dropped down to five per cent, according to private weather agency AccuWeather. The cloud cover in the city remained above 50 per cent. A video released by news agency PTI showed visuals of heavy rain outside the Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad, the venue for the final match of the Indian Premier League, which is scheduled to start at 7:30 pm. AccuWeather said there was a 66 per cent chance of rain in the city on Tuesday afternoon, with conditions expected to ease by evening. However, amid concerns regarding the weather before the RCB vs PBKS final game of the IPL in Ahmedabad, the chances of precipitation had continued to remain low in the city. The possibility of rain in Ahmedabad is expected to increase up to 9 per cent by night, with a 2 per cent chance of thunderstorms in the city. The PBKS vs MI Qualifier 2 match held on Sunday had also been disrupted by the rain during the initial couple of hours. After the onset of the southwest monsoon on May 24 over Kerala, the its progress across the country stalled, two senior weather officials said according to a Reuters report. However, the rains will increase again starting May 11, covering the rest of the country, the report stated SD Sanap, scientist with the India Meteorological Department's Pune office, as saying. India witnessed its earliest onset in 16 years, with the southwest monsoon arriving eight days before its normal date on June 1, according to the India Meteorological Department. The onset occurred after all the meteorological criteria were satisfied, with the cloud cover over southeast Arabian Sea and its adjoining peninsular areas, increasing a couple of days before May 24. A weather system is likely to develop over the Bay of Bengal around June 11, strengthening and monsoon and also creating favourable conditions for it to cover the northern parts of the country, Reuters quoted a weather department official as saying.
