Ahmedabad weather today: Rain lashes parts of city despite low chances

Hindustan Times2 days ago

Rains lashed parts of Gujarat's Ahmedabad on Tuesday, after the city witnessed partly cloudy skies. Hot and humid conditions persisted throughout the day in the city, with temperatures touching a sweltering 38 degree Celsius and humidity at 42 per cent.
This comes after the chances of precipitation dropped down to five per cent, according to private weather agency AccuWeather. The cloud cover in the city remained above 50 per cent.
A video released by news agency PTI showed visuals of heavy rain outside the Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad, the venue for the final match of the Indian Premier League, which is scheduled to start at 7:30 pm.
AccuWeather said there was a 66 per cent chance of rain in the city on Tuesday afternoon, with conditions expected to ease by evening. However, amid concerns regarding the weather before the RCB vs PBKS final game of the IPL in Ahmedabad, the chances of precipitation had continued to remain low in the city.
The possibility of rain in Ahmedabad is expected to increase up to 9 per cent by night, with a 2 per cent chance of thunderstorms in the city.
The PBKS vs MI Qualifier 2 match held on Sunday had also been disrupted by the rain during the initial couple of hours.
After the onset of the southwest monsoon on May 24 over Kerala, the its progress across the country stalled, two senior weather officials said according to a Reuters report.
However, the rains will increase again starting May 11, covering the rest of the country, the report stated SD Sanap, scientist with the India Meteorological Department's Pune office, as saying.
India witnessed its earliest onset in 16 years, with the southwest monsoon arriving eight days before its normal date on June 1, according to the India Meteorological Department.
The onset occurred after all the meteorological criteria were satisfied, with the cloud cover over southeast Arabian Sea and its adjoining peninsular areas, increasing a couple of days before May 24.
A weather system is likely to develop over the Bay of Bengal around June 11, strengthening and monsoon and also creating favourable conditions for it to cover the northern parts of the country, Reuters quoted a weather department official as saying.

Bengaluru stampede probe: Notices to be issued to RCB, Police Commissioner and KSCA

Bengaluru Urban Deputy Commissioner G Jagadeesha, who is leading the magisterial inquiry into the stampede near M Chinnaswamy Stadium, said on Thursday that notices will be issued to the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) management, the event organisers, and City Police Commissioner B Dayananda, news agency PTI reported. The stampede, which occurred during the RCB victory celebrations on Wednesday, resulted in the deaths of 11 people and left over 50 injured. (Also Read: 'Bengaluru lost its image, BJP playing politics on dead bodies': DK Shivakumar on stampede) "I visited the KSCA stadium today to review the scene. Notices will be sent to key stakeholders to join the inquiry. The investigation will be completed within 15 days," Jagadeesha told reporters. He clarified that the inquiry is just beginning and refrained from making any conclusions about who was responsible. "I am starting the inquiry now. I will not draw conclusions at this stage," he said. When asked whether permission had been granted for the event, the Deputy Commissioner said he was not the competent authority to issue permissions, which fall under the purview of the Police Commissioner. "I have to inquire and submit a report to the government," he added. The state government had earlier announced a magisterial probe into the incident and promised accountability following public outcry and political criticism. In response to the stampede near Bengaluru's M. Chinnaswamy Stadium that claimed 11 lives, the Karnataka government will introduce a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to regulate large-scale public events, state Home Minister G Parameshwara announced on Thursday. Speaking to reporters, Parameshwara said the proposed SOP will cover mega events, public meetings, and celebrations, with a focus on preventing crowd-related incidents. He added that the government is committed to identifying the lapses that led to Wednesday's tragedy, where thousands had gathered to celebrate Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL victory, overwhelming the stadium's capacity. "Strict measures will be taken to address the shortcomings that resulted in this unfortunate incident," he said. ‘It was a total frenzy': Karnataka tells HC after 11 die in Bengaluru stampede, court takes suo motu cognisance

The Karnataka government on Thursday told the state HC said that the situation outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru was a 'total frenzy' as 11 were killed in a deadly stampede on June 4. Hearing the matter, the Karnataka High Court decided to take suo motu cognisance of the incident. 'We have expressed ourselves to the Advocate General and he has filed a status report, which is taken on record. Registry is directed to register this suo-motu cognisance as suo-moto WP,' a division bench of Acting Chief Justice V Kameshwar Rao and Justice CM Joshi said. Advocate General Shashi Kiran Shetty, representing the State said that that the Chinnaswamy stadium is meant to hold about 30,000 people, but 2.5 lakh people showed up to witness the victory ceremony after Royal Challengers Bengaluru won their first IPL title after 18 years. 'The stadium was meant to accommodate about 30,000 people but 2.5 lakh people showed up. The stampede took place after 'free entry' was announced. ‘My fiancée was inside, unaware of the chaos': X user shares emotional post after RCB stampede that killed 11

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) sparked wild celebrations across Bengaluru after winning their maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title in 18 years. The team clinched victory on Tuesday by defeating Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. On Wednesday morning, RCB's management announced plans for a victory parade in the city. This featured an open-top bus procession from Vidhana Soudha to Chinnaswamy Stadium, followed by a celebratory event inside the venue. A limited number of free passes for the event were released online. However, joy turned into tragedy on Wednesday evening when a stampede unfolded outside the stadium, just ahead of RCB's victory parade. According to reports, at least eleven people died and several others were injured in the incident. Among the many emotional reactions shared online, an X user who goes by @MNVGowda revealed that his fiancée had been inside the stadium at the time, completely unaware of the chaos outside. 'My fiancée was inside the stadium when the stampede happened. She said she had no idea what was going on outside and only found out after coming out. I can't imagine how Kohli and the team must have felt upon hearing this heartbreaking news. I'm feeling really low right now,' the post read. They were felicitated at Vidhana Soudha in the presence of Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, before heading to the stadium for the much-anticipated open-top bus parade. Thousands of fans had gathered around both Vidhana Soudha and Chinnaswamy Stadium in anticipation. However, there was confusion around the celebrations near the stadium as the victory parade was only confirmed at the last minute.
