Kevin Thelwell gets ruthless with Rangers stars as sporting director sees no limit to Ibrox exits
The club's sporting director admits i;ts inevitable more players will leave but won't put an exact number on departures
Kevin Thelwell says he won't shy away from making ruthless decisions on Rangers players' futures.
The Ibrox club's new sporting director has already started work, along with new boss Russell Martin, on overhauling the squad.
And Thelwell insists they're ready to make big calls to make Rangers stronger - and ensure they hit the ground running ahead in the new campaign.
The pair have already targeted certain players, including the likes of Leicester City defender Conor Coady and Israeli striker Dor Turgeman.
But there is still uncertainty over a number of current stars who under-performed at Ibrox last term.
Thelwell says they'll be decisive in rebuilding a squad so that it's capable of immediately challenging for trophies this season.
When asked if there could be as many as 12 players leaving and the same amount coming in, he said: ' I probably wouldn't want to put a number on it at the moment.
'Clearly, there's been work being done behind the scenes already.
'We've been evaluating and reviewing the current group that we've got.
'There are some very good players here at Rangers. But with every football club, there's room for improvement, isn't there?
'We want to go into the transfer market and find opportunities that help the team be better and stronger.
'Now that Russell is here as head coach, we've got a chance to sit down very quickly and talk more about what the group looks like and what we need to do going forward.
'We have to make some hard, fast decisions and then hopefully start to quickly build a team that helps us to win.'
Rangers might have to field bids for some of their sellable assets this summer, with the likes of Nico Raskin, Mohamed Diomande and Hamza Igamane linked with moves away from Ibrox.
Thelwell admits there will be changes to the squad but is adamant that he and Martin want to come out of the summer window with a stronger pool of players than they've got now.
The former Everton sporting director said: 'From my perspective, we want the strongest team possible.
'We all understand there's going to be some players coming in and others who will leave.
'That has to be part of any plan, effectively. But in reality, where we want to be is making sure that by the time the transfer window closes - the team looks stronger for the work we've done during that trading period.
'That's what we'll be working on.'

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) FORMER Rangers and Dundee star Charlie Adam is being considered for the Motherwell job, according to a report. It was reported last week that midfielder Adam was leaving his role as Everton's set piece coach under David Moyes in an attempt to return to frontline management. Sign up for the Rangers newsletter Sign up 2 Charlie Adam with David Moyes Credit: Reuters 2 Fir Park, Motherwell Credit: Kenny Ramsay He was previously head coach at Fleetwood Town - and now the Daily Record say he could be set to return north of the border in the top job at Fir Park. We told you yesterday how Central Coast Mariners boss Mark Jackson had emerged as a shock candidate for the job. Leeds-born Jackson, a former defender who mainly played in England's lower leagues, has spent the past three years Down Under after previously bossing MK Dons. He has won an A-League Premiership and Championship as well as the Asian Champions League Two title. In the 2023-24 season Jackson and the Mariners won a Double, emulating ex-Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou who achieved the feat with Brisbane Road in 2010-11. Jackson took over from Nick Montgomery who had left to become manager of Hibs following the club's A-League Grand Final victory. The 47-year-old honed his coaching talents working at Leeds United, where he came through the ranks as a player. The Fir Park side were rocked when Michael Wimmer chose to step down from the club. He departed at the end of the season for family reasons to join SVV Jahn Regensburg. Robbie Neilson and Tony Docherty have also been linked with the position but the 'Well board have shown they're unafraid to look outwith the usual contenders for the role. Two World Cup winners, club record signing and a future boss in £35m splurge – Rangers' biggest transfer window
It was a huge summer of change at Ibrox 27 years ago with Dick Advocaat embarking on a major spending spree Russell Martin is still to make his first signing as Rangers manager and fans are eager to see what kind of quality will come through the door at Ibrox this summer. But imagine the Light Blues recruited a couple of World Cup winners, broke their club record fee and signed a host of international stars? It's a scenario Martin could only dream of given it's changed days at Rangers - but that was very much the reality in the summer of 1998. The Martin revolution will be much lower key than 27 years ago when Dick Advocaat arrived for a revolution not seen down Edmiston Drive since Graeme Souness changed the face of Scottish football just over a decade earlier. It came on the back of the club's first trophyless season in since the campaign before Souness arrived, with Walter Smith stepping down to be replaced by the Dutchman. David Murray opened his cheque book to sign off on the kind of spending spree that would eventually see the club's financial collapse. Almost £35million was spent that season in the days before there was a transfer window. First in was Advocaat's trusted captain at his former club PSV Eindhoven, Arthur Numan (£5m), who only missed out on a place at the World Cup final in France weeks earlier on penalties after a shoot-out defeat to Brazil. Giovanni van Bronckhorst shared a dressing room room with him during the tournament and joined him at Ibrox for the same fee - with flop Peter van Vossen thrown into the deal that brought him from Feyenoord. Rangers made a profit on classy midfielder van Bronckhorst when he was later sold to Arsenal and he of course returned as boss recently. Advocaat revealed the white boots of Gabriel Amato first caught his attention while playing for Real Mallorca and the Argentinian's skills saw him stand out at Rangers but he wasn't used enough to justify his fee (£4.2m). After continually being linked with a move to Rangers, Andrei Kanchelskis (£5.5) finally arrived at Ibrox and it was a then club record fee that brought him from Fiorentina. Andy Goram left big gloves to fill but Lionel Charbonnier (£1.2m) had a World Cup winners' gong in his luggage when he touched down in Glasgow. The eccentric Frenchman was joined later that season by Stephane Guivarc'h (£3.5m) from Newcastle United who was also in that triumphant Les Bleus squad. Yet for all the big money spent that summer, it was perhaps a free transfer who proved the best piece of business - Rod Wallace signing from Leeds United for nothing. The same couldn't be said of the late Daniel Prodan (£2.2m) who never played a first team game with the Romanian's rushed medical a harsh lesson with the defender plagued by a knee injury. Article continues below Murray was keen to keep a Scottish identity amid the influx of foreigners and who better than Braveheart himself? Colin Hendry (£4m) was Scotland captain, having led the nation at the World Cup in France. Neil McCann (£1.2m) added to the tartan contingent when he signed from Hearts in the winter alongside Stefan Klos (£700,000) who went on to become one of Rangers' greatest ever keepers. And even as the Light Blues closed in on a domestic treble that season, they continued to splash the cash with Claudio Reyna (£1.2m) signing from Wolfsburg, Craig Moore (£1m) returning to the club after a brief spell at Crystal Palace and youngster Lee Feeney (£100,000) from Linfield.

Rangers-linked star 'set' for transfer to European giants
The former Ballon d'Or winner will leave the Bernabeu after this summer's Club World Cup in the USA. The Croatia captain - who was tentatively linked with a sensational move to Rangers last month - is set to join AC Milan. That's according to Fabrizio Romano, who states that a medical is organised. The transfer guru wrote on X: "Luka Modrić to undergo medical and complete formal steps of AC Milan move after the Club World Cup. "No signature/official steps before that as Modrić wants to focus on Real Madrid at the best level possible until the end." Read more: Modric has nearly 600 appearances to his name for Real, winning a staggering six Champions League trophies in that time since his transfer from Tottenham in 2012. The links with Rangers arose when Davide Ancelotti was believed to be in the running to become the next head coach of the Ibrox club. However, after whittling down their candidates, the Rangers board opted to offer the position to Russel Martin, who has been in the post for a week. Ancelotti has re-joined his dad's backroom staff, now at the Brazil national team.
