Paul Finebaum praises Dabo Swinney, says Cade Klubnik is better QB than LSU's Nussmeier

Finebaum: Swinney is player's coach who has 'transformed' with where college football is now.
ESPN's Paul Finebaum has taken plenty of shots at Dabo Swinney through the years, but the veteran college football commentator continued with his apparent about-face on the Clemson coach Friday on "Get Up."
Finebaum joined host Mike Greenberg and studio panelists Harry Douglass, Mike Tannenbaum and Damien Woody to discuss some of the top storylines entering the 2025 college football season.
In one segment, Greenberg replayed Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik's comments from ACC Kickoff in which the former 5-star recruit from Austin, Texas, recalled how Swinney had stuck with him after a shaky 2023 season that included four losses.
"After my sophomore year, when everybody kind of told me I sucked and wasn't very good, a lot of people wanted me out of Clemson," Klubnik said Thursday. "Coach Swinney pulled me into his office and told me, 'Cade, I believe in you and let's go to work.' ... When he could have gone and done what a lot of other coaches would do, but didn't and pulled me in tight and said I believe in you. I'll never forget that moment."
Finebaum praised Swinney for sticking with Klubnik and said that the Clemson coach had gradually "transformed" with where the game is now -- and that it might be enough fuel to help a Tigers return to the national championship game this season.
"Greeny, I don't think I need to remind you how many times I've been here talking about how Dabo's dynasty is done -- oh, maybe five or six. But what Dabo Swinney has done, he has transformed with where we are in college football. And at the core, he is a player's coach. His players love him, and that moment that we heard yesterday in Charlotte was significant, and it may be the fuel that helps Clemson come back from where they have been to possibly playing for a national championship. And that's the reason (for) the coach-player relationship, and Dabo has it with many others, as well."
Finebaum said last week that Swinney had returned Clemson to national title contender status and added: "I think this is his best team since the 2019 title run."
What a difference a year makes.
Finebaum says Cade Klubnik is better QB than LSU's Garrett Nussmeier
In a round of "Fact or Fiction" during Friday's episode of Get Up, Greenberg asked Finebaum whether it was a fact that Klubnik was a better quarterback than Nussmeier.
Finebaum's answer:
"That's fact, and we're splitting hairs here because these are the two best quarterbacks in the country. Nussmeier is the son of a coach. He is well-prepared, but I like Klubnik better in the clutch. I saw Nussmeier make too many mistakes under pressure, tried to do way too much."
Klubnik threw for 3,639 yards and 36 touchdowns to only six interceptions in 14 games last season while leading Clemson to 10 wins, an ACC championship, and the program's first College Football Playoff appearance since 2020.
Nussmeier threw for more yards (4,052) than Klubnik a year ago and helped lead LSU to six straight wins and a No. 8 ranking after their season-opening loss to USC. But he had costly turnovers in losses to Texas A&M and Alabama as part of a three-game losing streak that dropped Brian Kelly's team from playoff contention. LSU finished 9-4 after a win over Baylor in the Texas Bowl.
Clemson and LSU will open the season at Memorial Stadium on Aug. 30 at 7:30 p.m. ET. The game will be televised on ABC.

ESPN ranks Ravens above Eagles for best 2025 starting lineup

The post ESPN ranks Ravens above Eagles for best 2025 starting lineup appeared first on ClutchPoints. With the Baltimore Ravens entering the 2025 season, there is no doubt that the team will be under a lot of pressure and high expectations to compete for a Super Bowl. As ESPN listed Ravens star Lamar Jackson lower than people thought on their quarterback rankings, the same outlet had them No. 1 in the starting lineup rankings, even over the Super Bowl champions Philadelphia Eagles. ESPN analyst Mike Clay would speak about Baltimore being the No. 1 team, speaking about their strengths and weaknesses, along with the X-factors and nonstarters to know about. Funny enough, he would label the strength of the team being the quarterbacks in Jackson and saying that Cooper Rush is a 'solid backup,' while a weakness for the team is the guard spots on the offensive line. 'Lamar Jackson, an All-Pro in each of the past two seasons and the NFL MVP in 2019 and 2023, is one of the best in the business,' Clay wrote. 'He fell just short of his second consecutive MVP last season even though he led the league in QBR (77.3) and produced career-high marks in passing yards (4,172) and passing touchdowns (41, the second most in the league).' 'New year, same 'weakness' for a roster that is otherwise pretty stacked,' Clay continued. 'On the left side, Patrick Mekari is out and will be replaced by Andrew Vorhees, Ben Cleveland, or perhaps a rookie. Daniel Faalele returns on the right side after underwhelming as a run blocker and ranking among the worst in the league in run block win rate (71.8%).' ESPN explains why the Eagles are under the Ravens While the Ravens prepare for training camp, the team that rivals them as the top team in the league, according to ESPN, is the Eagles, who dominated the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl. As for their strengths, Clay would have offensive tackle, which makes sense since the team's offensive line is one of the best units every season, whereas edge rusher is a weakness for Philadelphia. 'The defending champs have many strengths, but it's tough to beat arguably the league's top tackle duo, with Jordan Mailata manning the left side and Lane Johnson on the right,' Clay wrote. 'Mailata ranked among the top tackles in PFF grade, pass block win rate, and run block win rate in both 2023 and 2024. Johnson is 35 years old but hasn't lost a step, ranking top 10 among tackles in pass and run block win rate last season.' 'Josh Sweat (free agency), Brandon Graham (retirement) and Bryce Huff (trade) are all gone, leaving Nolan Smith Jr. as the only established player on the depth chart,' Clay continued about the team's weakness. 'Smith is likely to be joined in the starting lineup by 2024 third-rounder Jalyx Hunt, who was a solid backup as a rookie.' It remains to be seen if ESPN's rankings will come true with the Ravens on top over the Eagles. Golden State Warriors reportedly hold \

The Golden State Warriors are yet to make an addition to the roster this summer. Mike Dunleavy Jr. and Joe Lacob are likely tied up in negotiations with Jonathan Kuminga, whose unrestricted free agency has turned into the biggest saga of the offseason. According to ESPN's Anthony Slater, Seth Curry is drawing "mutual interest" with the Warriors. Adding the sharpshooter would put both Curry brothers on the same team, while also giving Steve Kerr's second unit one of the most trusty sharpshooters the NBA has to offer. "They want some extra shooting," Slater said via a recent episode of ESPN's NBA Today. "And another name i'm hearing, with mutual interest, Seth Curry as a potential bench shooting option with a family ties." Curry played in 68 games for the Charlotte Hornets last season, averaging 6.5 points and 1.7 rebounds per outing. However, it was his efficiency that caught the eye, with him shooting 45.6% from deep on 2.7 attempts each game. He also shot 50.3% from 2-point range. The Warriors would likely welcome some additional floor spacing off the bench. Furthermore, Curry could be available at the minimum, which would make him a cost-controlled addition with significant upside. Of course, other teams around the NBA could also covet the shooting he brings, so it will remain to be seen whether the Warriors firm up their reported interest and sign him to a year in the Bay Area.
