Iraqi MP: Cabinet to discuss Kurdish pay crisis
The Iraqi Council of Ministers will address the salary crisis in the Kurdistan Region during its regular session on July 8, a lawmaker revealed on Tuesday.
Sabah Sobhi, the MP from the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), told Shafaq News that the salary and oil disputes in the Region are on track to be resolved soon following a series of meetings between Baghdad and Erbil.
He pointed out that the crisis has persisted since the amendment of Article 12 in the Federal Budget Law, adding, 'We hope the federal government will resolve the issue through legal and constitutional channels outlined in Articles 11 and 12.'
On Monday, a delegation from the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) arrived in Baghdad—the second visit in two weeks—as part of ongoing efforts to reach an agreement with the Iraqi government, delivering the Region's formal response to the latest federal proposals.

Basrah crudes drops despite global oil rebound
Shafaq News – Basrah On Wednesday, prices of Basrah crude grades declined despite a rebound in global oil markets. Basrah Heavy crude dropped by 58 cents, or approximately 0.86%, to settle at $66.89 per barrel. Basrah Medium also fell by 58 cents, or 0.82%, to $69.94 per barrel. This comes as international oil prices recovered after three consecutive sessions of losses. Moscow reports mass drone interceptions
Shafaq News – Moscow/ Kyiv Russia's Ministry of Defence announced on Wednesday that its air defence systems intercepted and destroyed 33 Ukrainian drones overnight across several regions. Twelve of the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were downed over the Tula Region, 11 over Rostov, six over Nizhny Novgorod, two over Bryansk, and one each over Kursk and Kaluga, according to the ministry. The surge in drone activity coincides with an announcement by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirming that Ukrainian and Russian delegations will meet in Turkiye for a new round of negotiations. Previous rounds in Istanbul, held on May 16 and June 2, resulted in the exchange of thousands of prisoners of war and the remains of fallen soldiers. Meanwhile, Russia launched large-scale naval exercises codenamed July Storm, involving operations across the Pacific Ocean, Arctic Ocean, Baltic Sea, and Caspian Sea. The drills, running from July 23 to 27, involve 150 warships, 120 aircraft and helicopters, 15,000 personnel, 950 units of specialised equipment, and 10 missile systems. Russia's Defence Ministry stated that the exercises are designed to assess the navy's combat readiness in non-standard scenarios and test long-range precision weapons, unmanned systems, and emerging military technologies.

Iraq's CF authorizes Wasit governor's dismissal
Shafaq News – Baghdad On Wednesday, Iraq's Coordination Framework (CF), a political alliance dominated by Shiite parties, authorized Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani to dismiss Wasit Governor Mohammed Jameel al-Mayahy following an investigation that uncovered evidence of negligence related to last week's deadly fire in Kut, eastern Iraq. A source informed Shafaq News that Mayahy's removal forms part of a wider legal process targeting officials implicated in emergency response failures. Earlier, members of parliament from Wasit and other provinces gathered signatures backing a formal recommendation for the governor's dismissal. Lawmakers are also preparing a request for a special parliamentary session to vote on the matter once the government issues its official decision. This development came after a Coordination Framework meeting two days earlier, which focused on examining the causes of the fire that engulfed a large hypermarket in Kut, killing more than 60 people, including women and children. Preliminary findings pointed to serious shortcomings in the governor's performance, prompting most coalition factions to support his removal. The tragedy also led to the arrest of senior officials connected to the incident. Simultaneously, Iraq's Civil Defense Directorate launched a nationwide campaign to enforce fire safety regulations, ordering the closure of 1,118 projects within 48 hours for violations.
