Man United wants striker Mbeumo as Amorim looks to add to Cunha transfer

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Manchester United has made a move for Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo, a person familiar with the situation told the Associated Press on Thursday.
The person spoke on the condition of confidentiality because United has not publicly declared its interest.
The 20-time English league champion is planning to overhaul a team that has just come off its worst season in the Premier League era and missed out on qualification for any European competition.
United coach Ruben Amorim has identified his forward line as an area in need of major improvement.
A deal has already been agreed for Brazil forward Matheus Cunha and Mbeumo would add further strength to an attack that had the fifth worst scoring record in the Premier League.
English media said a bid of 55 million pounds ($74.8 million) was made for Mbeumo.
The 25-year-old Cameroon international had 20 goals last season. By comparison, United strikers Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee scored just 18 between them in all competitions.
Amorim is trying to turn United's fortunes around after 12 years without winning the league.
He has made a fast start to his rebuilding plans, with a deal for Cunha and a move for Mbeumo within weeks of the season ending.
He has previously described his team as perhaps the worst in United's history and last month he apologized to fans for a 'disastrous' season.
United ended the campaign in 15th — its lowest finish in the modern era and just three places above the relegation zone. United also set unwanted club records for the most losses in a Premier League season and the lowest points total.

EU plan would limit Chinese device makers in Europe

European Union member states this week voted to support a plan to adopt measures that would restrict Chinese medical device makers' access to the EU market. The member states took the action, under the EU's International Procurement Instrument, after concluding an investigation in January that looked at China's practices in the public procurement market for medical devices. The investigation found that government practices unfairly encouraged Chinese hospitals to choose domestic manufacturers' products. 'The Commission has identified measures and practices in the Chinese procurement market that lead to discrimination against EU operators and EU-made supplies,' Olof Gill, commission spokesperson, said Thursday in an emailed statement. 'This discrimination also harms both the Chinese healthcare infrastructure, which is deprived of quality equipment, and EU businesses, with a high cost in terms of jobs and economic activity in the EU.' The commission has discussed its concerns with Chinese authorities. However, a satisfactory solution has not been proposed, and the EU had no other option than to tackle the issue through an IPI investigation, Gill wrote. The commission said it could not disclose the content of the draft IPI measure or next steps in the process. Chinese manufacturers would be prohibited from bidding on public procurement contracts worth more than 5 million euros for five years. In addition, no more than 50% of a contract's value may be subcontracted to Chinese entities or include Chinese-origin medical devices, MedTech Europe said in a statement. The trade group said it would provide further updates once the IPI measures are published in the EU's official journal. The EU investigation into China's medical device procurement practices was the first use of the IPI, which was introduced in 2022. Getting fair access to Chinese markets became more challenging for medical device companies after the country launched a program calling for domestically produced medical equipment to achieve 50% market penetration in county-level hospitals by 2020 and 70% by 2025, according to a statement from the European Chamber, which represents European businesses in China. European and Chinese leaders will meet in July at a summit in Beijing. Kyle Teel gets a new shirt as he joins the Chicago White Sox for big league debut
Associated Press CHICAGO (AP) — Kyle Teel has a new collared shirt and his own big league opportunity. Teel, one of the majors' top prospects, was brought up by the Chicago White Sox on Friday. The 23-year-old catcher was in the starting lineup for the opener of a weekend series against Kansas City, batting sixth. Teel was acquired in the Garrett Crochet trade with the Boston Red Sox in December. He batted .295 with eight homers and 30 RBIs in 50 games with Triple-A Charlotte. When Chase Meidroth, another prospect who was acquired by the White Sox in the Crochet deal, was brought up in April, Meirdroth told Teel he might need a collared shirt for his major league arrival, and Teel gave the infielder one of his own. So Charlotte manager Sergio Santos returned the favor when he broke the news to Teel that he was going to Chicago, handing over a new shirt. Teel was the No. 14 pick in the 2023 amateur draft out of the University of Virginia. His arrival marks a positive moment for a last-place White Sox team in the middle of a painful rebuilding process. Chicago also optioned catcher Korey Lee to Charlotte and designated right-hander Ryan Cusick for assignment. The 26-year-old Lee was sidelined by a sprained left ankle before he was activated by the White Sox on May 27.
