Sarawak makes history with inaugural Borneo International Band Festival, eyes bigger return in 2026
KUCHING (July 12): The inaugural Borneo International Band Festival (BIBF) 2025 made a rousing debut today with vibrant performances by student musicians from across Borneo, marking a milestone in Sarawak's cultural and music landscape.
Held over two days starting today, the festival features 19 school bands from Kuching, Sibu, Miri, and Tawau competing in three categories – ensemble, concert band, and marching band.
Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, who officiated the opening and prize-giving ceremonies, hailed the event as a historic first for Sarawak and the region.
'Today, we are not just here for music or for the festival, we are here because we are making history.
'No matter what, you will always be remembered as part of the very first Borneo International Band Festival,' he said when officiating the festival at Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus' multipurpose hall here today.
Dr Sim urged participants, parents, and supporters to take pride in their involvement, stressing that BIBF goes beyond competition – it reflects the values needed to build a stronger society.
'We are building up Sarawak, not just through competitions or musical exchange, but through the values of discipline, unity and teamwork that music fosters.
'For all the young musicians, I wish you the very best because you are a beacon of hope, a beacon of discipline, a beacon of teamwork,' he said.
Malaysia Concert and Marching Band Association (MCMBA) president Wilson Tan also commended the performers, noting the festival's role in fostering community and cultural bonds.
'Over the last couple of hours, we have not only witnessed musical excellence, but the power of community and culture.
'From the thrilling sounds of the concert bands and the electrifying energy of the marching bands, each performance was a testament to the dedication, discipline and passion that defines our band community,' he said.
Tan said BIBF serves as a platform to nurture talent, forge friendships, and connect generations through music.
'Let us carry the spirit of this festival back to our schools, our communities and also to continue to build our nation,' he said.
Citing overwhelming interest, Tan also announced the return of the festival next year.
'We've already received inquiries from bands in Thailand, Singapore, Taiwan and even Ireland.
'We look forward to welcoming everyone back for BIBF 2026, which will be held from July 10 to 13, right here in Kuching,' he said.

S'wakian filmmaker Cheyenne Tan inducted as national active member of US' Television Academy
Cheyenne Tan KUCHING (Aug 4): Two-time Oscar-nominated Sarawakian filmmaker Cheyenne Tan has been officially inducted as a national active member of the US' Television Academy in its Documentary Programming Peer Group, making her eligible to vote for the prestigious Primetime Emmy Awards. As a member of the academy, Tan, who is originally from Kuching and now based in Los Angeles, California, will have access to exclusive industry events, networking opportunities, private screenings, and annual voting privileges in the Primetime Emmys. 'I am incredibly grateful to be welcomed into the Television Academy. It's not just an honour; it's also a responsibility I take seriously. 'I hope to help elevate work that's not just excellent television but also bold, nuanced, and reflective of the diverse world we live in,' she told The Borneo Post in an email correspondence. She said that as someone working in non-fiction, she has witnessed firsthand how award attention can open doors for vital, under-represented voices. 'Awards matter. They impact what gets funded, distributed, and platformed, and I want to use that influence responsibly,' she added. The Television Academy, which was founded in 1946, is dedicated to honouring excellence in television. Membership is offered to industry professionals actively working in television production and distribution, with eligibility based on peer group affiliation and a nominated or significant body of work. Tan shared that as an active voting member for the Emmys, she will be eligible to cast votes in the general programme categories, which include Outstanding Drama Series, Comedy Series, Limited Series and so on. 'However, only specific peer groups can vote in the other categories. Since I am in the Documentary Programming Peer Group, I can vote in the documentary or non-fiction programmes as well. 'Only peer groups vote for the specific peer group categories, so, for example, actors vote for actors, directors for directors, and in my case, documentarians vote for their fellow documentarians,' she explained. Tan's notable producing credits for television include 'Turning Point: The Vietnam War' (Netflix, 2025), a five-part docu-series that documents the Vietnam War, and its impact on those involved; 'The Romantics' (Netflix, 2023), a four-part documentary series about the history of Bollywood; and an Emmy nomination for 'Through Our Eyes: Shelter' (HBO Max, 2021) that follows three unhoused children and their parents over one summer in Los Angeles as they seek steady housing. She has continued to make waves in the documentary film world where earlier this year, the short documentary 'I Am Ready, Warden'—which she co-produced—was nominated for an Oscar at the 97th Academy Awards. The film, centred on a Texas death row inmate seeking redemption, premiered at the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival and won the Jury Award at the Austin Film Festival. She earned her first Oscar nomination in 2020 for 'St. Louis Superman', a short documentary which follows activist, battle rapper, and former politician Bruce Franks Jr. overcoming personal trauma and political obstacles to pass a critical bill for his community. Named as one of Forbes Asia's 30 Under 30 list in 2022, Tan continues to represent Malaysian talent on the global stage. She is currently working on a new, unannounced documentary series slated for release in 2026. Cheyenne Tan lead Primetime Emmy Awards Television Academy

KUCHING (Aug 4): Norihan Jamil emerged champion at the grand finale of MAGGI's 'Jom Masak & Menang Bersama' campaign, winning a brand new Isuzu D-Max. The housewife from Kuching bested six other finalists in a thrilling culinary showdown held at VivaCity Megamall here, which was graced by Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah and MAGGI Malaysia and Singapore business executive officer Ivy Tan Link Cheh. The lively grand finale saw Norihan and the finalists going head-to-head to demonstrate their culinary skills in a cooking competition under the tagline 'Warisan Citarasa Sarawak'. Each contestant was challenged to create a dish using a mystery box featuring local ingredients such as Ikan Salei Lumek and Sayur Kecei—paying tribute to the flavours and traditions that define Sarawak's rich food legacy. Based on these dishes, the panel of judges then selected the top three contestants, who advanced to the second round for a sensorial taste test challenge, where they had to identify five unknown ingredients. The finalist who named all five ingredients correctly was crowned the grand prize winner. In addition to the champion, the first runner-up received branded cooking appliances worth RM3,000, while the remaining five finalists received RM1,500 worth of branded cooking appliances each. The competition, which formed the centerpiece of MAGGI's Gawai-themed campaign 'Honouring the Cooks Behind the Festivities', marked a joyous close to the campaign's two-month journey across Sarawak. Each year MAGGI celebrates Sarawak's culinary heritage during Gawai as an immersive experience centred around the deep love for food and the meaningful moments shared as a community. A beloved companion in Sarawakian households and deeply embedded in the local culture and heritage, MAGGI not only connects people and strengthen bonds through food, it also empowers communities by supporting local causes and non-governmental organisations (NGO). As part of the 'Jom Masak & Menang Bersama MAGGI' contest, every purchase of MAGGI products between May 1 to June 30 this year saw MAGGI donating RM0.10, with the total of RM15,000 channelled towards PurpleLily Social Association Kuching—a Sarawak-based NGO that uplifts women and families. Fatimah commended MAGGI for their initiative in making the Gawai Dayak celebrations extra special every year. 'Going beyond this, MAGGI's support for the less privileged and its efforts to empower women through initiatives like 'Wanita Cukup Berani' has remained a constant part of the betterment of communities in Sarawak. 'We are immensely fortunate for this and look forward to a longstanding partnership,' she said. She also thanked MAGGI for supporting PurpleLily this year. 'MAGGI made the right choice in choosing PurpleLily, an NGO which focuses on empowering women. Any NGO that empowers women is very important to us,' she said. Tan, meanwhile, expressed MAGGI's gratitude for the support from Sarawakians and are honoured to be part of their lives and celebration each year. 'Through worthy partnerships and heartfelt contributions during Gawai, MAGGI can lend a helping hand to underserved communities, so they move forward in life. 'Our strong heritage and presence in Sarawak continue to enrich our annual campaign, enabling us to strengthen respect for local traditions and local cuisine through the stories of everyday cooks and their powerful role in preserving culture and connecting generations, while also unifying people,' she said. Taking it up a notch this year, MAGGI paid tribute to a true Malaysian favourite, MAGGI Kari-Lah, a flavour that hits every sense. MAGGI Kari is a beloved cultural icon known for its consistent, bold and deeply satisfying 12-spice broth, with its signature aroma and soul-warming taste having long united Malaysians across generations, states, and occasions. Bringing to life the spirit of taste and togetherness, the MAGGI Kari-Lah Roadshow marked a milestone with its first-ever nationwide event in East Malaysia. This travelling celebration brought Sarawakians together to rediscover the warmth and joy this iconic dish represents. Visitors of all ages had the opportunity to participate in a multisensory experience featuring the MAGGI Kari-Lah journey, with five interactive zones inspired by taste, aroma, texture, sound and sight. In addition, there were cooking showcases of Umai Udang MAGGI Kari and MAGGI Kari Terung Asam by MAGGI's resident chefs, Chef Sharifah Hamidah Syed Mohsin and Chef Muhammad Hakimi Badrul Hisham, featuring local ingredients seasoned with popular MAGGI products as well as vibrant performances, interactive games and fun-filled activities for the public to fully immerse themselves in the warm spirit of Gawai.
