Kelantan police to deploy more plainclothes units at Malaysia-Thai border

KOTA BARU: Police will strengthen their intelligence unit by deploying more plainclothes personnel to monitor and curb the movement of locals and foreigners attempting to cross the Malaysia-Thailand border via illegal routes.
Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the expanded unit, comprising personnel from the General Operations Force (GOF) and officers stationed at border police posts, is expected to begin operations as early as this week.
"This is part of our ongoing efforts to combat the entry of people through unauthorised border routes," he told reporters at the state police contingent headquarters' sacrificial ceremony here today.
Yusoff said members of the unit would patrol the border in plain clothes to avoid detection by smugglers and syndicates.
He added that discussions with the commander of the GOF's Southeast Brigade would be held soon to finalise operational details.
Kelantan shares a 105km land border with Thailand, which has long been used for smuggling and cross-border criminal activities.
In a related matter, Yusoff said police arrested 13 people, including a Thai woman, for illegally entering Kelantan via non-gazetted routes during the week before and after Aidiladha.
They were detained in separate operations in Tumpat and Rantau Panjang between May 31 and June 8.
"Ten were nabbed in the week leading up to Aidiladha (May 31 to June 6), while the remaining three were arrested on June 7 and 8.
"These people crossed into Kelantan via the Golok River and landed at several illegal jetties along the border," he said.
He added that some of the suspects had returned from entertainment activities in Thailand, while others had travelled for family reasons.
"I would like to emphasise once again that police will not tolerate anyone who violates the law, and firm action will be taken against those found committing such offences," he said.

Some UPSI crash victims only identifiable by clothing, says volunteer

KUALA LUMPUR: Some Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students who perished in the Gerik bus crash on Monday were so badly injured that their remains could only be identified by their clothing, according to a volunteer who assisted in the post-tragedy response. Pertubuhan Amal Komuniti Besut chairman, Mohd Azizul Azli Mohd Sani, who led a convoy of 60 volunteers with hearses and ambulances from Besut, Terengganu, described the experience as one of the most heart-wrenching of his life. Azizul said the most unforgettable moment occurred at the Forensic Department of Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun (HRPB) in Ipoh, during the identification and post-mortem process. "We left Besut at 10am on Monday and arrived in Ipoh around 4pm. "The area around the forensics department was packed with grieving next-of-kin. We witnessed some collapsing silently from overwhelming grief. "Most of the victims suffered severe injuries, and in some cases, families could only identify their loved ones through their clothing," he told Berita Harian. At around 1am on Monday, 15 UPSI students were killed in a crash involving the tour bus they were travelling in and a Perodua Alza along the East-West Highway (JRTB). The students were returning to the university's main campus in Tanjung Malim from Jertih, Terengganu, after the Aidiladha holiday break. Azizul said some family members initially struggled to accept the loss and had to be comforted by police and counsellors before the identification process could begin. "Once they had calmed down, the identification started. I saw many relatives walk out of the forensics room in a daze, unable to speak. "It was as though the tragedy was too sudden to comprehend, but eventually, they came to terms with Allah's will," he said. He also expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support shown by members of the public, including non-Muslims, who provided food aid to his team during their time at the hospital. "Imagine, we had a convoy of 18 hearses and two ambulances travelling from Besut since 10am. We had only eaten some bread in the van and went without a proper meal until the evening, sleeping briefly in the hearse while waiting for the forensic process to conclude. "Unexpectedly, many people, including members of the Indian community, came to deliver food such as nasi kandar, nasi lemak, burgers and drinks around 6pm. "This tragedy marked the largest mass remains management exercise our organisation has handled since its founding in 2018. "We also helped transport injured victims and their families back to Terengganu after they were discharged from hospital, without charging any fees," he added.

Yusoff vows to continue fight for justice after acquittal

KUALA LUMPUR: Muhammed Yusoff Rawther has vowed to continue seeking justice after being acquitted and discharged of drug trafficking and firearm possession charges. The 32-year-old, a former political research assistant, maintained that he had been wrongfully accused and framed, describing his ordeal as a "relentless test" of faith and resilience. "This acquittal is a victory for all Malaysians. "I would also like to thank the prison officers for their professionalism in ensuring my safety and welfare while I was in prison," he said during a packed press conference at the court complex lobby here today. Yusoff said his time in Sungai Buloh Prison while awaiting trial had left a deep impact on him. "This experience meant a lot to me, especially as someone who has never committed any crime. I am thankful to Allah for this outcome." Meanwhile, Yusoff's lawyer, Muhammad Rafique Rashid Ali, called on the police to provide updates on his client's report claiming he had been implicated. "He lodged the report after he was brought to court in September last year. "I would like to ask the Inspector-General of Police about the status of the investigation... have they recorded any statement?" he asked. Earlier, High Court judge Datuk Muhammad Jamil Hussin freed Yusoff from drug trafficking and possession of imitation firearms charges after ruling that the prosecution had failed to establish a prima facie case. In his judgment, Jamil said the police's failure to investigate Yusoff's conspiracy claim had prejudiced his right to a fair trial, as it denied him the opportunity to have his defence properly considered and verified. "In a statement made two days after his arrest, the accused claimed that he was a victim who had been framed by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. "The police had ample time to verify the truth of the facts presented in the accused's version. "However, both investigation officers failed to conduct any investigation to verify the accused's version of events. "This failure has prejudiced the accused's right to a fair trial," the court ruled. The judge also said the evidence produced in court failed to support a reasonable conclusion that the accused had exclusive control over the vehicle or custody and control of the pistols and drugs. He said the evidence only raised suspicion and was insufficient to prove the accused's possession or control of the items. Yusoff had been accused of trafficking 305g of cannabis in a vehicle parked in front of a surau at the Kuala Lumpur police contingent headquarters at 10.15am on Sept 6 last year. He also faced a separate charge of possessing two imitation pistols by the roadside near a condominium on Jalan Bukit Kiara at 9.25am on the same day.

6,369 crashes recorded over four days of Op Lancar

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 6,369 accidents were recorded during the four-day Op Lancar road safety operation from June 6 to 9 in conjunction with the Aidiladha festive period. Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said the figure represents an increase of three per cent or 181 cases compared to the same period last year. He said there were 58 fatal accidents recorded this year, compared to 84 cases last year — a decrease of 26 cases. 'The number of deaths also showed a drop to 78 cases, compared to 88 deaths during the same period last year,' he said in a statement today. Mohd Yusri said out of the total number of accidents, 6,120 cases involved vehicle damage, a slight increase compared to 5,854 cases last year. 'JSPT is committed to law enforcement to ensure the safety of road users and that traffic regulations are adhered to by all parties. 'Disciplined road users who practise responsible behaviour can help minimise the risk of accidents, in addition to achieving the target of reducing road deaths and injuries,' he said.
