Appeals court to rule on boatman convicted over fatal sea crash that killed two Bahrainis
Two Asian crew members were also sentenced to 40 days in jail and ordered deported for illegal fishing and overstaying their visas.
Prosecutors accused the main defendant of causing death by negligence while operating the vessel under the influence of Pregabalin, a controlled substance he was not authorised to possess. He was also charged with multiple safety violations, including lacking essential equipment such as life jackets, a fire extinguisher, and first aid supplies. His vessel was also missing navigation lights and a tracking device, increasing the risk of collision.
The court originally sentenced him to six months for manslaughter and breaching marine safety regulations, and an additional month plus a BD100 fine for drug possession. He was also fined BD1,000 for illegal bottom trawling and vessel misidentification, and BD50 for missing safety equipment.
The crew received one-month sentences for unlawful fishing and an additional 10 days for immigration violations. They face permanent deportation after serving their terms.
The incident occurred near Al Mohammadiya Islet, where two boats collided. The boatman was later found towing the damaged vessel near Malkiya, with one victim's body on board. The second body was recovered near Budaiya port.
Civil claims related to the incident have been referred to the civil courts.

Rehabilitation centre worker cleared of abuse charges
TDT | Manama A man accused of mistreating children with disabilities at a rehabilitation centre has been acquitted by the Minor Criminal Court. The case was filed by the Ministry of Social Development, whose inspectors accused the worker of physically and mentally harming more than five children. The allegations were partly supported by security camera footage and witness testimonies. Prosecutors reviewed the footage, questioned the head of the centre and the judicial officer who filed the complaint, and eventually referred the case to trial. The defendant denied all charges during questioning. In court, defence lawyer Abeer Abdulrahman argued that the claims failed to meet the legal definition of abuse under Article 40 of Bahrain's 2021 Law on Restorative Justice for Children. She maintained that the actions seen in the video clips did not amount to mistreatment. She also challenged the legitimacy of the report, stating it was filed by an unauthorised person and that no professional assessment of the children had been conducted. A defence witness who worked alongside the accused testified that he only assisted the children physically and showed no signs of wrongdoing. The lawyer further pointed out that the surveillance clips, which ranged from five to twenty seconds in length, were too short to prove misconduct. Abdulrahman noted that the defendant had no prior complaints from parents or centre management and was generally well regarded. She concluded that the case lacked solid evidence and relied on speculation. The court ultimately agreed and dismissed the charges.

Appeal ruling set in fatal Saar crash case
A Bahraini man jailed over a crash that killed three members of the same family and left two children badly injured is due to hear the outcome of his appeal on 14 August. The High Criminal Appeals Court will decide whether to uphold the original sentence handed down for a head-on collision in Saar. The Traffic Court had earlier sentenced the 29-year-old to six years in prison. It also ordered the suspension of his driving licence for one year after his release and the confiscation of the vehicle used in the crash. The crash took place on 30 May 2025. Prosecutors said the man had been speeding, under the influence of drugs and alcohol, and entered the opposite lane without caution. He struck the victims' car head-on. The collision killed the driver, his wife and their son, and left two other children in the vehicle seriously hurt. The charges also included several traffic offences. The prosecution called for the harshest penalty possible, arguing the man had shown no regard for the law or the lives of others.

Bahrain: Woman Jailed And Deported For ‘Indecent' Social Media Posts
A woman has been jailed for a year and fined BD200 after broadcasting indecent videos to the public on social media, according to a statement from the Public Prosecution. The court also ordered her mobile phones to be confiscated and ruled that she be deported permanently once she serves her sentence. The Minor Criminal Court delivered its ruling in person after examining footage in which the defendant appeared in suggestive poses that prosecutors said went against public morals and the country's customs. Report The matter came to light following a report filed by the Cybercrime Directorate at the Ministry of Interior. Investigators had come across a publicly viewable account showing the woman in compromising positions and uploading material deemed inappropriate for general audiences. Prosecutors issued a warrant for her arrest. She was questioned shortly after being taken into custody and shown the footage. She admitted it was hers. The prosecution ordered her detention during the inquiry and seized the phone she used. She was then sent to court in custody, where the verdict was handed down.
