Tiswadi, Ponda water supply hit again as pipe tears
A pipeline at Opa Water Works was ruptured by repeated power interruptions, hitting the potable water supply to Tiswadi and Ponda talukas on Saturday.
This is the second pipeline rupture in less than a month.
On June 26, the same line was ruptured by a 'surge'. A surge means whenever water falls with a tremendous force, the pipeline carrying it bursts near the joints.
That occurs when water is being fetched from a river to a treatment plant and the power supply is suddenly cut.
The water was released on Saturday afternoon after the ruptured pipeline was welded. However, it will take another day to normalise the supply to households in Panaji and high-lying areas.
Sunil Kerkar, an assistant engineer at the Curti water plant, said the rising main pipeline, by which a treatment plant gets raw water from the pumping station, developed a rupture during the intervening night of Friday and Saturday. The rupture was noticed around 1am and the water supply was immediately stopped, Kerkar said.
Before the pipeline ruptured, power outages occurred at least three times on Friday. According to Kerkar, a sudden outage of electricity affects the pressure inside a pipeline resulting in a rupture.

The rupture of the 750mm rising main pipeline of 40 million litres per day (MLD) water treatment plant at Opa Water Works at Khandepar, Ponda, affected the potable water supply to Tiswadi and Ponda on Saturday, said Soma Naik, an executive engineer of the department of drinking water.
Sunil Shet, another assistant engineer at the Opa Water Works, said the 750mm mild steel rising main pipeline burst at midnight and repairs were taken up in the morning as the pipeline had to be emptied to facilitate electric welding.
Once the repair work was completed, all reservoirs were filled and water released in the afternoon. However, some high-lying areas will receive supply only from Sunday afternoon, he said.

Gangotri highway restoration in progress; Dharali families still homeless
Uttarkashi: Work is on to restore the Gangotri National Highway, closed for the past 16 days. After cutting through 150m at Dabarani, the machines of Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and Public Works Department (PWD) have reached Songadh. Plans include channelising the Bhagirathi river and building a wire-crate security wall to repair about 400m of the washed-away road, a challenging stretch to restore. The highway, crucial for the Char Dham yatra, was severely damaged in the Harsil-Dharali disaster. Following repairs to landslide-hit sections at Chadeti and Papadgad, BRO built a bailey bridge at Limchi Gad. Cutting work at Dabarani started on Aug 11, with the first 150m completed in 15 days on Tuesday. Two youths died in a landslide while crossing the under-construction road earlier this week. On Wednesday, BRO equipment was moved to Songadh, where workers began river channelisation and security wall construction with wire crates on Thursday. BRO commander Rajkishore said road repair using gabion walls and debris filling is underway and will be completed soon. It has been over two weeks since the Dharali disaster, but missing persons remain untraced and many homeless families lack proper shelter. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 20 Effective Home Remedies to Relieve Your Lower Back Pain Learn More Undo Residents are still desperately searching for relatives, while displaced families stay with relatives or in tents, struggling with cold and poor sanitation. Dharali market was devastated on Aug 5, with hotels, resorts, and gardens washed away. Resident Sachindra Panwar said about 15 families are homeless and tents are inadequate due to cold and lack of toilets, especially affecting women. Yuvak Mangal Dal president Shubham Panwar confirmed that no permanent shelter has been arranged; affected people rely on relatives and community kitchens run by the administration. Disaster management officer Shardul Gusain said that a govt order provides Rs 4,000 monthly rent assistance for affected families, with the process underway. Tehsildar SL Semwal added that 53 houses with 112 families were damaged in Dharali. Applications for rent aid have been collected, and displaced families are expected to be relocated soon. Dhami orders ex-gratia within 72 hrs for disaster-related deaths
Dehradun: Chief minister (CM) Pushkar Singh Dhami has ordered ex-gratia assistance in cases of disaster-related deaths to be disbursed to families within 72 hours, with a maximum delay of one week if identification issues arise. He warned officials that delays would not be tolerated. During a state-wide monsoon review, disaster management secretary Vinod Kumar Suman relayed the CM's instructions to district magistrates, emphasising timely use of available funds under SDRF and SDMF for relief and reconstruction. Highlighting preparedness gaps, officials called for an audit of unused helipads to ensure quick activation during emergencies. DIG (implementation) Rajkumar Negi stressed the need to identify vulnerable river settlements and enhance alert systems, citing lessons from the recent Dharali disaster. The review also mandated improved warning dissemination, i.e., alerts from the State Emergency Operation Centre should be shared via district-level WhatsApp groups, including local leaders and signages must be installed in landslide and river-prone areas. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Best SIP Plans for NRIs in Romania – Get ₹2L Monthly Pension | Invest ₹18K PB Learn More Undo Suman said that CM is closely monitoring rainfall and has directed districts to stay on high alert amid an orange weather warning issued by the meteorological department.
