Oscar presenters Emma Stone, Andrew Garfield, Whoopi Goldberg rehearse before the show
Emma Stone knows her way around the Dolby Theatre, but the even the two-time Oscar winner needs a little rehearsing before the big show. This year she's not a nominee but a presenter, though which category she'll be announcing is under wraps until it's broadcast live around the world on Sunday.
The day before the ceremony, Stone was casually dressed in a brown shirt jacket, white T-shirt and jeans. On the Oscars stage Saturday, she mimicked walking to the microphone in high heels before immediately flubbing her lines — a moment of levity for the busy production staff milling around.
'Oh God,' she said. 'This is going to go great.'
Stone eventually made it through her lines and hugged the stand-in playing the winner of her category before handing her the award. At Oscars rehearsals, the golden statuettes are real, but the winners are 'for this rehearsal only' with a lineup of working actors playing all variety of nominees, from shorts directors to best actress candidates. The Associated Press got a peek at what's to come — though most details about who's presenting what, and what they will say are secret until the live broadcast.
Many stars cycled in and out of the show venue Saturday morning. Andrew Garfield, Whoopi Goldberg, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Miley Cyrus, Oprah Winfrey, Sterling K. Brown, Ana de Armas, Goldie Hawn and Miles Teller all made their way to Hollywood to practice their lines, walk in their show heels and find their marks.
After Stone, Winfrey made her way to the stage wearing sky high heels — presumably to practice navigating the long stage in the heels she's wearing to the show. She and her presenting partner, who will remain a surprise until show day, elicited a rare standing ovation from the people in the room — an array of production staff, camera people and publicists.
Later, Garfield took Hawn's arm on the walk to the stage, where they'd be running through the two awards they're set to hand out: Animated feature and animated short.
Garfield, in glasses, light chinos, button up and sweater draped over his shoulder, fanned himself with the winner's envelope. He and Hawn, in a loose black pantsuit, chatted and laughed together waiting for the go-ahead. On the next run-through, he took her hand on the walk and draped his arm around her shoulder when they got to the microphone. Their fun chemistry got laughs in the room.
'Ok here we go,' Hawn said, after a brief flub and re-set. Garfield let out a hearty laugh.
Randolph, who won the supporting actress award last year for her performance in 'The Holdovers' wore a floral jumpsuit and looked out into the audience below, full of oversized pictures of stars and nominees where they'll be seated.
The men were even more casually dressed — Teller wore a baseball cap, jeans and a 'Late Show with David Lettermen" T-shirt. Brown looked like he was either coming from or going to the gym, in athletic shorts and a back sweatshirt. He'll be presenting the live action shorts prize with de Armas. Both were delighted by their fake winner's well-researched speech. Brown even made a joking 'wrap it up' gesture.
But soon it was time for the crew and everyone to break for lunch — they're in the final stretch before the 97th Academy Awards, airing live around the world Sunday on ABC and streaming on Hulu starting at 7 p.m. EST.

Before Mr & Mrs Smith , Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston were the golden couple of the entertainment industry, with Pitt the pin up heartthrob and Aniston, 'Rachel from Friends', ever the girl next door. Angelina Jolie, meanwhile, was a maverick action film star who was covered in tattoos, married to Billy Bob Thornton who was 20 years her senior, and famously kissed her own brother on stage at the Oscars. It's almost impossible to cast your mind back to those days given how Mr & Mrs Smith reshaped the cultural landscape. Not because of its gripping action sequences or its plot – it's actually a distinctly average film with a 60% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – but because it marked the end of Pitt and Aniston's marriage and the start of 'Brangelina'. Tabloid fodder at its finest, what was already an uncomfortable situation for the three actors was made worse by the frenzied rivalry whipped up by the media. 'Team Aniston' and 'Team Jolie' t-shirts swept the nation and were famously worn famous faces like Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, tell-all interviews were offered and accepted on both sides, and an unrelenting stream of commentary followed – and in many ways still does. Despite rumours that Pitt and Jolie had an affair on the set of the film, they have always maintained that their relationship did not start until after Aniston filed for divorce in January 2005. They did, however, later admit that they developed feelings for each other while working together. 'It took until the end of the shoot for us, I think, to realise that it might mean something more than we'd earlier allowed ourselves to believe,' Jolie told The New York Post in 2006. 'And both knowing that the reality of that was a big thing, something that was going to take a lot of serious consideration.' When Aniston announced that she and Pitt were separating after five years of marriage, she cited irreconcilable differences and said, 'our separation is not the result of any of the speculation reported by the tabloid media' and that they remained 'committed and caring friends'. Of course, all that stood to change, at least in the court of public opinion, when Pitt and Jolie's romance was confirmed. First via viral pictures of them holidaying together in Kenya and then in July 2005 through their extensive W magazine spread titled, 'Domestic Bliss'. Something that, understandably, riled up Team Aniston. The following September, Aniston spoke out about her divorce for the first time, telling Vanity Fair : 'There are many stages of grief. It's sad, something coming to an end. It cracks you open.' Later adding, 'I would much rather everyone move on. I am not defined by this relationship. I am not defined by the part [the media is] making me play in the triangle.' In January 2006, Jolie and Pitt announced they were expecting a child together, six months after they adopted their daughter Zahara from Ethiopia. Four more children followed to form a total of six and all were present when the couple got married at their co-owned French Estate, Chateau Miraval, in 2014. In 2016, two years after their wedding, Jolie filed for divorce from Pitt citing irreconcilable differences after a fateful private plane journey from France to LA. In 2022, Jolie filed court papers accusing Pitt of drunkenly attacking her and their children during the aforementioned flight, prompting her to file for divorce. She alleges that he grabbed her by the head and verbally abused and poured alcohol on his family during the journey. Pitt has always denied the allegations and was cleared of wrongdoing following an FBI investigation at the time. Nevertheless, the separation marked the start of an eight-year divorce battle that saw Pitt and Jolie in disputes over both the custody of their minor children and their French winery. The latter is still ongoing. Pitt and Jolie are finally divorced, but they are set to meet each other in court next year. They will both be subjected to depositions that may reveal additional personal details about their marriage, including the alleged 'years of abuse' Jolie claims Pitt subjected her to. The trial will also settle the rightful ownership of Jolie's 50% shares of Chateau Miraval, which Jolie sold shortly after filing for divorce. Pitt claims the sale was carried out without permission while Jolie alleges that she attempted to sell her shares to Pitt in the first instance but refused after he asked her to sign a $8.5m NDA to cover up said 'years of abuse'. As for the state of their once picture-perfect family, it similarly hangs in the balance. All six of Pitt and Jolie's children seem to have taken a marked stance with their mother, with several of them dropping 'Pitt' from their surnames. In 2023, their son Pax took to Instagram on Father's Day to share his thoughts about the F1 actor. 'You will never understand the damage you have done to my family because you are incapable of doing so,' he wrote. 'You have made the lives of those closest to me a constant hell. […] The truth will come to light someday.' Even so, anyone following the saga would assume Pitt and Jolie are at least somewhat relieved to no longer be legally married. However, in a recent interview with GQ to promote his upcoming film F1 , which is out on 27 June, Pitt seemed indifferent. 'No, I don't think it was that major of a thing,' he responded when asked if he was relieved that the divorce was behind him. 'Just something coming to fruition, legally.' The Jolie-Pitt clan's dirty laundry is set to air in court in 2026, but Jolie's lawyers have insisted she never wanted their case to go to trial. 'Angelina never wanted any of this,' her attorney Paul Murphy said after a judge ruled that Pitt must turn over documents and communications that Jolie claims will prove he covered up alleged domestic violence. 'She never pressed charges, she left all their properties, and she is the one who tried to sell him the business in the first place. […] She wants this to end, the children want this to end, and Mr. Pitt should focus on healing their family, not pursuing lawsuits.' The legacy of Mr & Mrs Smith has, in many ways, returned to its origins – a toxic, highly-publicised feud with real lives and relationships at the centre. Sadly, this is a story that has not ended well for anyone. As for the 'truth', all eyes will be on the courtroom next year. Jamie Foxx delivers heartfelt speech at BET Awards thanking daughters who helped his stroke recovery
Jamie Foxx let the tears flow while accepting the Ultimate Icon Award at the BET Awards on June 9. After being introduced by Stevie Wonder, the Oscar winner opened on a note of gratitude. 'Man, we used to take this thing for granted — that God is good,' he began his speech. 'I cannot even begin to express the love that I feel from everybody out there,' he continued. Foxx, who revealed in his 2024 Netflix special 'Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was...' that he had suffered a brain bleed that led to a stroke in 2023, expressed appreciation at his good fortune, noting he thought there was a time he could've been included in the show's in memoriam segment. 'I got to be honest ... When I saw that in memoriam, I was like, 'Man, that could've been me,'' he said. 'But I don't know why I went through what I went through, but I know my second chance, I'm not going to turn it down,' he said while getting emotional. 'I'm not going to turn down. I have so much love to give. I told Him, I said, 'Man, bro,' I said, 'Just give me one more crack at this and I promise.' I said, 'Whatever reason you put this on me, I promise I'm (going to) do right. And I'm (going to) do right in front of y'all, because I know a lot of times, when we get on we forget about where we come from,' he said. Later, he turned his attention to his family, starting with his sister, Deidre Dixon, who was at the show. He thanked her for helping save his life. 'When I went through what I was going through, she shut it down. And she made sure that she took care of her brother,' he said. The 'Ray' star also paid tribute to his two daughters. 'My beautiful daughter, Corinne, I cannot say enough about you. You've always taken a backseat to everything. But when you needed to drive it, you drove. And you made sure I was here ... At a certain point, I'm going to stop crying, but I'm not going to stop just yet,' he said, fighting tears. Foxx then turned his attention to his other daughter, Anelise. 'Anelise Estelle Foxx, my baby with the big hair. She hides under that hair because she got something special. You're so beautiful, man,' Foxx said. 'When I was fighting for my life in there, I got to say this. They said, 'We're going to lose him because his vitals are bad.' And I didn't want my 14-year-old to see me like that. 'But Anelise overheard the conversation and she snuck into my hospital room with her guitar and said, 'I know what my Daddy needs,'' he continued. 'And as she played the guitar, my vitals dropped. And I realized that God was in that guitar. And the nurses ran in and said, 'What did they give him?' My daughter said, 'Shh, I've got him.'' During his Netflix special, Foxx talked about how Anelise helped save his life when she played the guitar for him in the hospital. 'You know what I found out? It was God in that guitar,' he said. 'That's my spiritual defibrillator.' She then walked onto the stage with her guitar and they hugged.
