UP, Gujarat to offer new incentives for electronics component makers
Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat are set to unveil additional incentive schemes to complement the Centre's electronics components manufacturing programme, as both states compete to attract investors in the burgeoning sector.
The moves come as the two states prepare to host major semiconductor facilities, positioning them as emerging hubs for India's electronics manufacturing ambitions.
Gujarat's policy is 'under active consideration and will be announced soon,' according to Mona Khandhar, principal secretary in the state's department of science and technology. However, she declined to reveal specifics, citing the policy's pending approval.
Uttar Pradesh's 'electronic component promotion policy' is in its final stages of notification and will combine performance-linked incentives with capital subsidies, people aware of the matter told Hindustan Times.
The announcements follow similar initiatives by Assam and Tamil Nadu, reflecting a broader state-level push to capitalise on the Centre's ₹22,919-crore Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS).
Notified in early May by the Union IT ministry, the ECMS aims to build a robust ecosystem for passive electronic components such as resistors, capacitors and inductors, targeting both global and domestic investments. Active components like chips and transistors fall under the separate India Semiconductor Mission.

Both Gujarat and UP are strategically positioned with upcoming semiconductor projects. The Tata Group's fabrication unit in Gujarat is currently under construction, while the HCL-Foxconn OSAT facility near Jewar's Noida International Airport was announced earlier in May.
The semiconductor presence provides a crucial advantage, as Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma explained in a recent interview. The state is pursuing an aggressive top-up scheme to leverage Tata's ecosystem of utilities, services and infrastructure.
'We don't want this ecosystem to serve only semiconductors. It should be leveraged by other sectors too, like electronics component manufacturing,' Sarma told HT.

The state govt has already inked agreements with companies for more than Rs 3 lakh crore investments. IT giants such as Google, Microsoft, Cognizant, and HCL were already expanding their operations in Hyderabad, he said, adding that this was the first step under 'Telangana Rising' project. "Plans are in the pipeline to develop Hyderabad on a par with other developed metros in the world. A Future City is also being developed in 30,000 acres with state-of-the-art facilities which will be a destination for investments from around the world. AI City, Pharma City, Sports City, Life Sciences and Health City are also being developed," he said. The prestigious Kaloji Sahitya Puraskaram was presented to Nalimela Bhaskar. As many as 19 police officers were presented with Medals for Gallantry and 11 other officers with Medal for Meritorious Service by the CM.

"The trains and the security apparatus are in place for operation," a central govt official said. Railways has made changes to Vande Bharat train that will operate between Katra and Srinagar. It has features such as heating systems ensuring smooth operation in cold weather, anti-spall layers, and automatic doors. Katra-Srinagar link is part of Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail project that spans 272km and includes 119km of tunnels. It includes two iconic engineering marvels - the Chenab Bridge and the Anji Khad Bridge. The entire corridor has been completed with an investment of Rs 42,930 crore.

Energy secy Alok passes away after prolonged illness
Jaipur: State energy secretary Alok passed away in the early hours of Monday in New Delhi following a prolonged illness. He is survived by his wife and two sons. A 1993-batch Rajasthan cadre officer, additional chief secretary Alok, who was on deputation to the Centre, took over the reins of the debt-ridden energy department in Feb last year after the new BJP govt came to power. He played a key role in steering the state govt's strategy to overhaul the sector by signing MoUs with the central PSUs and expediting the rollout of decentralised solar projects at the sub-station level, aimed at solarising agriculture connections. While much of the revamping, long-term in nature, is still in the early stages of progress, and the state's power utilities, including discoms, are still burdened with debts of about Rs 1.5 lakh crore, his passing away comes as a big loss for the sector. Around two months ago, he relinquished charge of the department to discoms chairman Arti Dogra as he moved to Delhi for treatment. Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma expressed his condolences and said Alok was a source of inspiration for many in his fraternity. Energy minister Heeralal Nagar also acknowledged his commitments to bringing changes in the power sector. "He was a capable and dutiful administrative officer. He made tireless efforts to materialise the resolve of CM Bhajan Lal Sharma to make Rajasthan a leader in the field of energy," said Nagar in a statement. During his career, Alok worked as collector of Udaipur, Kota, Bikaner and also helmed crucial departments as MD of RSRTC, RIICO, principal secretary of PWD, and revenue, among others.
