Retd bank staffers stage hunger strike, demand pension updation
Organised by the Coordination of Bank Pensioners and Retirees Organisations (CBPRO) and the All India Bank Pensioners' and Retirees' Confederation (AIBPARC), the protest saw participation from pensioners of public sector, State Bank of India, and select private sector banks.
The protesters are pressing for several key demands, most notably the implementation of pension updation as mandated by statutory Pension Regulation 35(1).
They highlighted that this has been delayed for nearly three decades, even though the pension corpus fund holds a substantial Rs 4.5 lakh crore. In addition to pension updation, the protesters demanded inclusion of special allowance in the calculation of gratuity and basic pension, extension of pension option to the small number of retirees who were previously left out, grant of consultative status to apex-level bank pensioners' and retirees' organisations and urged banks to cover the cost of the health insurance premium for the base policy. Addressing the crowd, K. Madhusudan, Secretary of AIBPARC's AP and TS Unit, lamented the indignities and discrimination faced by retirees, whose average age is over 75. He stated that despite their significant contributions to the banking industry, the government has shown little sympathy, forcing them to protest on the streets for their rights.

Speaking to the media, vice-chairman Ashok Pattanashetti said: "The factory needs Rs 150 crore for smooth operations. We turned to Ramesh Katti and AB Patil, who had promised alternative sources of funding, but failed. Jolle's assistance is now crucial in getting the factory up and running." UP Parliamentarian Fined Rs 1.35 Lakh Over Building Construction
Sambhal: Samajwadi Party Sambhal MP Zia-ur-Rehman Barq was fined Rs 1.35 lakh for allegedly carrying out construction without getting the building plan approved, authorities said on Tuesday. The construction took place in the Deepa Sarai locality of the city. An official said a notice was issued to the MP by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) on December 5 last year, followed by several reminders. SDM Vikas Chandra told reporters that the matter was under consideration, and an order in relation to it was issued on Monday. "The MP had sought an opportunity to submit a revised map, which was accepted. The compoundable portion of the construction was regularised upon payment of Rs 5,707. However, a penalty of Rs 1.35 lakh has been imposed for carrying out construction without approval or prior intimation," he said. Chandra said that a portion measuring one metre in length and 14 metres in width that falls in the setback area will not be compounded and must be removed within 30 days. "If the construction is not removed within the stipulated time, action will be taken as per the rules to demolish it," he added.
