These Are the Best (and Worst) U.S. Destinations for Public Bathroom Access

If you are a Type A travel planner, you know there is more to consider than making sure you get through your lists of restaurants to try and sights to see. And one of the most important things to plan for is where you will be able to use the bathroom when out and about. But if you are traveling in the United States, the answer may be difficult.
That's because the U.S. faces a public bathroom shortage, according to a new study from Tena, an adult incontinence brand. In fact, for every 100,000 people, there are just eight public bathrooms. (And if you've ever had to wait in a long line for a restroom, you can begin to understand just how dismal that statistic really is.)
To help travelers who don't want to factor in midday returns to their hotel for bathroom breaks, Tena ranked the best cities and states for public bathroom access, factoring bathroom cleanliness, wheelchair accessibility, overall density of public restrooms, and discoverability of the public restrooms. And there were some clear winners: Wyoming, Montana, and Hawaii offer the best overall public restroom access in the U.S.
Wyoming offers one of the largest caches of public restrooms with an average of 118 public bathrooms appearing on state-level map searches. These are mostly easy to find, spaced out, and well reviewed. Plus, the state ranks No. 1 for having the most wheelchair-accessible bathrooms in the country.
Montana similarly scored well, in part because Visit Montana offers a list of public restrooms available across the whole state, making them ultra easy for visitors and locals to find.
For its part, Hawaii has an abundance of public restrooms with the island of Oahu alone boasting more than 215 state-maintained public bathrooms. However, only 120 appear on Google Maps for the entire state, meaning finding the restrooms may require a bit more local insight.
When it comes to overall cleanliness, North Dakota's public restrooms came in first place. Overall, 94 percent of the bathrooms analyzed in the state had a rating of four stars or higher. Alaska, Indiana, and New Mexico also scored high, each with 88 percent of bathroom reviews at four stars or above.
The study's least impressive states were New Hampshire and Kentucky, each of which had a low number of public restrooms available (No. 11 and No. 20, respectively).

Southwest is now selling whole vacation packages

The low-cost carrier joins rivals in bundling flights, hotels, and more under a new program called Getaways. Southwest Airlines has officially entered the vacation package business. (So, you might say, nothing beats a Southwest holiday?) On August 19, the Dallas-based carrier announced the launch of Getaways by Southwest, an in-house product that lets customers book flights alongside hotel stays, rental cars, and ground transportation. While airlines like Delta, United, and American have long offered bundled trips, Southwest has until now focused solely on flights. The new Getaways program brings the airline into direct competition in the vacation package market, with destinations including Las Vegas, Orlando, Hawaii, Cancun, Punta Cana, and Montego Bay. The shift also reflects how airlines are increasingly positioning themselves as one-stop shops for leisure travel, an area where customers are seeking convenience and value. Packages booked through Getaways come with Southwest's signature policies, including two checked bags at no additional cost — something you don't get anymore when you book one of the airline's new, stripped seats alone. Customers also earn five Rapid Rewards points for every dollar spent. The airline says travelers will have more flexibility compared with some competitors: canceled trips can be converted into credits valid for 18 months, and there are no added fees for making changes, though price differences may apply. The bigger picture Southwest's entry into vacation packaging underscores how important leisure travelers have become to U.S. airlines, especially as business travel still hasn't fully recovered since the pandemic. The move could help the carrier capture more spending from loyal flyers who already book its flights but might otherwise turn to online travel agencies or rival carriers for full packages. This Destination Was Named the Most Peaceful and Serene Travel Spot in North America—and It Is Famous for Its Pristine Turquoise Lakes

Ranked for cleanliness, green space, and low noise, this destination has some of the most serene escapes on the planet. As "calm-cations" surge in popularity, travelers seeking tranquility might want to head up to Canada. Two North American destinations have been ranked in the top five for the best spots for serenity seekers by Travelbug, and both are in Canada. The award-winning holiday company rated 36 global destinations for world travelers interested in peaceful vacations. Travelbug took into account four separate metrics: the quality of green spaces, the level of noise and light pollution, local congestion levels, and overall cleanliness. And our northern neighbor is the only country with two destinations in the top five, demonstrating its appeal as a place for escapes into nature. Coming in tied for No. 3 in the world (and No. 1 in North America) is Banff, sharing the spot with Kyoto, Japan, and Cairns, Australia. The stunning town, located in the province of Alberta, was noted for its outstanding green spaces, scoring 80 out of 100, and its exceptional cleanliness, receiving a score of 76. With its dramatic views of the Canadian Rocky Mountains and pristine turquoise lakes, Banff is one of the most popular vacation destinations in Canada. The town, situated within Banff National Park, provides access to extensive hiking trails, waterfalls, and glaciers, and is a part of the scenic Icefields Parkway. Just behind Banff and ranking at No. 4 is Whistler, which is notable for scoring a perfect 100 for the quality of its parks and green spaces, its exceptional nature, and outdoor offerings. Whistler is home to one of North America's largest ski resorts, Whistler Blackcomb, and boasts thousands of acres of varied skiing terrain. The town itself has a pedestrian-only village and a laid-back energy. Both destinations have moderate to high travel congestion due to their popularity with tourists. July and August mark peak season in Banff. (During the 2023/2024 season, Banff National Park was the most visited national park in Canada.) Whistler receives three million visitors annually, with 55 percent visiting in the summer and 45 percent in the winter. The top spot overall went to Queensland, New Zealand, while the most peaceful beachside retreat with the lowest noise and light pollution is the Seychelles. However, the big winner is Australia as the country is home to three of the top 10 most peaceful vacation destinations: Cairns, which is near the Great Barrier Reef, ranked No. 3; the Gold Coast and its many beaches took the seventh spot; and Sydney was ninth.
