The Twin Cities' best doughnuts, according to Axios readers

Axios09-05-2025

Kyle here. I recently asked Axios readers to share your favorite doughnuts in the Twin Cities — the suggestions … do- nut disappoint.
The big picture: Taken together, your recommendations are a guide to the metro's most beloved doughnuts.
I tried more than 30 creations from the places you suggested just to make sure. (Tough assignment, I know.)
Taking the cake: More readers name-drop Minneapolis skyway favorite Cardigan Donuts (8 votes) than any other spot.
Right behind it are Bogart's (7), Minnetonka's YoYo (7), Golden Valley's Funner Brothers (6), and Minneapolis mainstays Mel-O-Glaze (5) and Glam Doll (4).
The fluffy middle: Prestige doughnut-makers get a lot of reader love, but so do simpler bakeries where a dozen generally costs less than $20:
Donut Hut (7 votes) is a big deal in Little Canada. Megan M. is one of several readers to warn us it regularly sells out fast.
Jeff D. says the buttercream at Northeast's Sarah Jane's Bakery is "otherworldly."
Bloomington's Sunrise serves "classic, simple doughnuts … with excellent execution," Zach D. tells us.
The gooey intrigue: As I suspected, nearly a dozen readers swore the metro's best doughnuts are at grocery stores or gas stations.
Kowalski's, Lunds & Byerlys and Almsted's Market in Crystal all got multiple votes.
What we're all (secretly?) saying: "I frickin' love me a good Holiday crème filled long john!" writes Katie M.
Best bites: My faves from your recs
Here are the 10 reader-recommended baked treats I can't stop thinking about.
What I did: I visited 15 bakeries — every doughnut spot in the metro that at least two readers recommended, minus the big chain grocers and gas stations.
At each place, I bought at least one specialty treat — not always a doughnut — and one staple variety like a plain glazed or a chocolate-frosted cake doughnut.
What I found …
Cardigan's old fashioned doughnut (Minneapolis): "There is only one correct doughnut answer," as Ashley J. recommends. Creamy consistency, pleasant almond finish, strong church basement vibes. $2.85
Bogart's brown butter (Minneapolis & St. Louis Park): Rich toffee notes and fluffy pastry. The fresher the better, so get to the bakeries in St. Louis Park or Minneapolis early. $3.50
The Heights Bakery 's raised glazed (Columbia Heights): A springy, brioche-like crumb that manages to be moist without being oily. $1.60
Plus: The blueberry Bismarck is worth trying just for the fresh-tasting fruit filling.
Funner Brothers' giant doughnut hole (Golden Valley): Frying a ball of dough this massive to get a soft golden exterior and a delicate interior without a hint of doughiness feels like a real achievement. $1.50
Dufner's chocolate with sprinkles (Plymouth): Well-raised dough, golden crust and frosting that balances sweet and bitter cocoa. $1.89
Puffy Cream Donuts Plus ' chocolate Bismarck (Eagan): Rena R. is right to dub them "drive-worthy doughnuts." Finished with powdered sugar, this creation's heart is its silky, whipped filling. $2.59
Donut Star's almond buttercream bar (Burnsville & Lakeville): As decadent as a slice of cake, but light enough for the breakfast nook. $2.50
Donut Hut's chocolate with nuts (Little Canada): The best of the cake doughnuts I tried. Vanilla notes in the dough, savory notes in the nuts. $1.95
Honorable mention: The chocolate-and-nuts from Sunrise Donuts.
Mel-O-Glaze's apple fritter (Minneapolis): I came into this taste test thinking Mel-O-Glaze was overrated for drowning interesting flavors in sugar.
But gosh darnit, their apple fritter was just as Kent K. describes — "big, apple-y and wonderful" — and the glaze wasn't overpowering. Credit where it's due! $3
Baker's Wife 's American tea cake (Minneapolis): Not a doughnut, but the treat I could've kept eating all day. A croissant-like roll frosted with sugar — but not a " cronut." $4.25
Their doughnuts aren't to be missed either, which Jesslyn F. loves because they're sold "at old school bakery prices!"
The fine print: More sweet spots
I focused on spots that at least two readers recommended — which means some worthy places got snubbed from my taste test.

Taylor Swift's Lack of AMAs Announcement Still Results in ‘Reputation' Bump

Welcome to Billboard Pro's newsletter, where we take a closer look at the songs, artists, curiosities and trends that have caught the music industry's attention. Some have come out of nowhere, others have taken months to catch on, and all of them could become ubiquitous in the blink of a TikTok clip. This week: Taylor Swift's most controversial album gets a bump in anticipation of an announcement that never materialized, Young Jeezy and Akon's classic teamup gets an unlikely meme boost and an odd cover of a Sly Stone classic drives listeners back to the original. Taylor Swift's 'Reputation' for Surprises Precedes Her on Streaming More from Billboard The Amity Affliction Cover Turnstile's 'Holiday' for 'Like a Version' Mariah Carey Celebrates 20 Years of 'The Emancipation of Mimi': Stream It Now Miley Cyrus' New Album 'Something Beautiful' This Way Comes: Stream It Now If you were watching the American Music Awards on Monday night (May 26), chances are pretty good you had your eyes peeled and ears open for a certain revelation from a certain pop superstar. Swifties had flooded the internet in recent weeks with predictions of a Taylor Swift Memorial Day Miracle – an appearance at the awards, most likely accompanied by an announcement of a new release, perhaps the long-awaited Reputation (Taylor's Version) re-recording. Unfortunately for the Swifties, the AMAs came and went without any appearances, announcements or drops from their fav. But hope clearly sprang eternal in the days leading up to the awards, at least on streaming: The 15 tracks on Reputation racked up a combined 11.3 million official on-demand U.S. streams across the first four days of this tracking week (May 23-26), ahead of the awards – a 14% gain from the equivalent period the prior, according to Luminate. And that bump was of course highest on Memorial Day, as the album racked up 2.4 million total streams on that day alone, a 29% gain from the prior Monday. 'Soul Survivor' was the breakout crossover hit 20 years ago for the rapper then known as Young Jeezy, as the Akon-assisted banger lifted to No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and helped establish his Let's Get It: Thug Motivation 101 as one of the year's biggest rap albums. Two decades later, the street anthem is once again delighting music fans, though through a relatively unlikely conduit: a TikTok meme about dating gaffes. Tiktoker Hadley (@localyerbafein) stroke viral paydirt last week (May 21) when she shared a video that captured the story of a guy – presumably one she was seeing, or at least considering seeing – responding to her interest in law with a question about her watching the TV show Suits. The video ends with footage of Hadley serving as a courtroom attorney, with the caption 'holy fckin airball' – all, of course, set to 'Soul Survivor.' The clip quickly spread through the app, racking up 10 million views and 1.8 million likes, and inspiring a number of other users to share their own he-shoots, he-doesn't-score stories, with Akon and Jeezy again serving as the soundtrack. Consequently, the track exploded on streaming towards the end of last week. For the tracking week ending May 22, 'Soul Survivor' amassed over 3 million official on-demand U.S. streams, according to Luminate – fully doubling its stream count from the prior week – and it should be headed for an even bigger tally this week, as TikTok keeps putting up one 'holy fckin airball' after another. In 2017, two greats of popular music – pop icon Cher and rap legend Future – teamed up for an unlikely collab cover of Sly & The Family's soul-pop classic 'Everyday People.' Their rendition was featured in a Gap commercial that showcased the star pair meeting up on a staircase on an otherwise-blank set to discuss how Cher can't get the 1969 Hot 100-topper out of her head, leading to her crooning the song over a trappy beat. Meanwhile, Future attempts to fill in with harmonies and ad libs – in a mixture that, unsurprisingly, feels slightly less than organic. The awkward commercial has recently begun to recirculate around the internet, resulting in pairs of TikTokers recreating the visual in endearing clips gently poking at the stilted chemistry of the original. The Cher & Future 'Everyday People' is not currently available in full on DSPs, but of course the Family Stone original is there for the streaming – and folks have been evidently charmed enough by the improbable cover to revisit (or check out) the original. According to Luminate, over the first four days of this tracking week (May 23-26), 'Everyday People' is up to 309,000 official on-demand U.S. streams from 256,000 over the same period in the prior week, a gain of 21%. In this week's example of never knowing where a breakout hit might come from in 2025, we have Scottish dance producer Sam Gellaitry. His song 'Assumptions,' from the 2021 EP IV, has begun to percolate on streaming over the past month, thanks to the Russian dancer Руслан Айдаев, now known to the internet as Blue Shirt Guy – who has been a meme of some degree for years already for his full-bodied dance moves, shot from behind. Recent viral videos have paired the clip with Gellaitry's throbbing electro-pop instrumental, resulting in it going nuts on TikTok all over again – with many of the app's finest donning their best blue shirts and filming themselves shaking it from behind. Consequently, the four-year-old 'Assumpstions' has risen to the top of Gellaitry's Spotify page, and is now racking up over 2.2 million official on-demand U.S. streams a week, up 142% from three weeks earlier, according to Luminate. Wynne Evans engaged

Wynne Evans has got engaged. The 53-year-old opera singer popped the question to girlfriend Liz Brookes over the weekend while they were on holiday in Morocco and he is feeling "a tiny bit smug" after she said yes. Sharing photos from the proposal, Wynne wrote on Instagram: "Big news… I got engaged! "This weekend in Morocco, somewhere between the couscous, the camels, and me limping around the souks like a man with no spatial awareness, I proposed to Liz — and she said yes! (No take-backs, I've checked.) "She's clever, she's kind, she's got excellent taste in men. Absolutely no idea how I pulled that off, but here we are! "Feeling very lucky, very happy, and just a tiny bit smug." The happy news comes after a tough few months for Wynne, after he was axed from the Strictly Come Dancing tour for making a sexually suggestive remark during a photocall and subsequently had the BBC confirm they wouldn't renew his rolling contract. A source told The Sun newspaper: "It has been a tumultuous six months for Wynne but Liz has been his absolute rock throughout. "Finally some wonderful news for Wynne and his inner circle to celibate and everyone is chuffed for them both. "He secretly bought an engagement ring and squirrelled it away for their holiday, and then popped the question over champagne. "Liz has been incredible over the past few months, supporting him through thick and thin, and had his back throughout, but obviously Wynne is telling everyone she's a lucky girl!" Wynne - who has two children with ex-wife Tanwen - revealed late last month that his BBC Radio Wales contract hadn't been used following a four-month investigation into the Strictly incident, for which he had previously apologised. In a new video on Instagram, he said: 'My beloved Wynners, From the very depths of my heart - thank you. 'These past few months, your love has been the light in my darkest days. Every message, every word of encouragement, every moment you stood by me has carried me through more than you could ever know. 'It breaks my heart to say the BBC has decided not to renew my contract so I won't be returning to my radio show. I'm gutted. 'That show wasn't just work - it was home. It was us. We laughed, we cried, we sang like nobody was listening. And somehow, through the airwaves, we became a family.' A spokesperson for the BBC told MailOnline: 'Wynne Evans is not under contract with the BBC. He is not returning to the mid-morning show on BBC Radio Wales and there are currently no plans to work with him.' However, Wynne revealed plans for a new show, which will air on a new app and website.

Tampa Bay's MerMandy helps Team USA win Merlympics gold medal

When Mandy Walker first donned a mermaid tail a couple years ago, she never thought she'd end up competing in it, let alone on the world stage. Why it matters: Walker, a mermaid performer and teacher from Riverview, was one of six athletes who represented the U.S. last month at the Official Merlympics 2025 in Wolfsburg, Germany, the Tampa Bay Times first reported. And the results are in: Team USA brought home the gold medal, besting more than a dozen other countries with teams in the competition. "It was a life-changing experience," Walker, who goes by MerMandy, told Axios. "USA blew first place out of the water. It was clear we worked our butts off — or, you could say, our tails off." State of play: For Walker, 44, that meant training five to six times a week for the last six months, building up her strength and endurance in and out of the water. Swimming with a monofin takes serious core strength. She did it all as a single mom of four and master's student, without a competitive swimming background or a coach. In February, her teammates visited from as far away as Indiana and Utah to practice in Florida together. They drilled their synchronization in the chilly waters of Alexander Springs in the Ocala National Forest and in the deep end at High 5, an aquatics center in Brandon. Soon, they were off to Germany, arriving a few days ahead of the May 24 competition to practice together a few more times. How it works: While the Merlympics aren't affiliated with the traditional Olympics, the competition has a similar structure with multiple events for individuals and with the synchronized swim, events included: A 50-meter surface swim testing speed. An underwater rescue emphasizing the merfolk oath of safety. An underwater photoshoot judging poise and appearance ("they do say mermaids are vain," Walker joked). Zoom out: They found time to have some fun, too. Team members stayed in the historic Hotel Alter Wolf, where they snapped photos with their tails hanging out the windows. Down the street was Schloss Wolfsburg, a medieval castle where Walker quipped she was just waiting for the moat to fill. The big picture: Mermaid culture has long had a presence in Florida thanks to the famous Weeki Wachee mermaids. But the professional scene has grown in popularity in recent years thanks to social media and the Netflix docuseries " MerPeople." That popularity shined at the competition, Walker said. Folks kept coming up to her saying they followed her on social media. What she's saying:"To meet friends that are now global — that's just mind-boggling and priceless," she said.
