Google Messages is getting a bold new look on smartwatches

Phone Arena4 days ago
Google is continuing its slow rollout of the Material 3 Expressive design language across its apps, and its latest stop is Wear OS. The Google Messages app on smartwatches is now showing signs of a visual refresh, first spotted by a Telegram user on a Pixel Watch 3.
The update brings visual elements that align closely with Material 3 Expressive: message bubbles now have subtle tints, buttons are filled with color, and interface shapes suggest more fluid interactions. Some list options now feature buttons with both icons and text, while others are shaped to hint at their scrollable behavior.
It's not clear yet how widely the redesign is being distributed. While some users on the latest version of Google Messages are already seeing the changes, others are not, which points to a server-side rollout. It may also be limited to specific hardware like the Pixel Watch 3 or newer Wear OS devices.

On smartphones, Google Messages is testing the same redesign, but only for beta users. The Google Keep app was recently updated with a thicker search bar and slightly larger icons. Google Phone also received a refresh, featuring rounded cards, a new dialer, and updated gesture controls. Google's Material 3 Expressive rollout mirrors Apple's own shift with its Liquid Glass UI in iOS 26 and watchOS 26. While Apple is focusing on fluid transitions and the transparent aesthetic to give its software a more futuristic feel, Google's approach leans more into customizable shapes and vibrant color accents. Both companies are clearly trying to break out of flat design—but Google's rollout has been slower, staggered across platforms and devices, whereas Apple's updates throughout this beta period has been more unified across iPhones, iPads, and Apple Watches.
Staggered rollouts, such as how Google usually does them, can be frustrating. Users running the latest software may not see the redesign immediately, which raises questions about the consistency of Google's software updates across Wear OS. That said, these types of server-side experiments often serve as final validation before a broader release.
That said, this is a step forward for Wear OS. While not a game-changer, the update reflects Google's continued investment in wearable software design, even as competition from Samsung's One UI Watch and Apple's watchOS remains strong. For users already in Google's ecosystem, the growing presence of Material 3 Expressive is bringing a more cohesive visual experience across platforms.

Epic Games' latest court win against Google will transform the Play Store forever

Michail, 01 August 2025 The ongoing Epic Games vs Google legal battle is nearing its end and the Fortnite maker is emerging as the winner. Following its court wins from 2023 and 2024, Epic has now amassed its latest victory as the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals denied Google's appeal to the previous rulings. This means Google will now be forced to allow third-party app stores to be publicly visible within the Play Store and operate freely with full access to its app catalog over the next three years. App developers can also set up and use alternative billing systems for apps and subscriptions, bypassing Google's own payment system and its 30% app tax. In addition, developers will be able to freely link users to download options outside of the Play Store. Google is also prohibited from offering device makers or carriers any form of money or perks to deter them from pre-installing third-party app stores on devices. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney confirmed that the Epic Games Store for Android is coming to Google Play as soon as possible. Google's regulatory affairs chief, Lee-Anne Mulholland, issued a statement following the court decision, claiming it would 'significantly harm user safety' and 'undermine the innovations that make Android competitive'. Google is expected to appeal the ruling to the Supreme Court but it will still have to begin implementing the new changes. Source (PDF)

Pixel 10 Pro: Is it Just About the Tensor G5?

The Pixel 10 Pro is set to be officially revealed on August 20, and the excitement is already heating up. With months of leaks behind us, Google's next flagship is shaping up to be more than just a routine the heart of the update is the all-new Tensor G5 chip – a major milestone for Google, as it's the company's first fully in-house processor built with TSMC. But while the chip is a big leap forward, it's not the only change worth paying attention to. As we get closer to launch day, more details are emerging that point to a broader evolution of the Pixel the Pixel 10 Pro will come with the new Tensor G5 chip, which is the first fully designed chip by Google and manufactured by TSMC. Previously, Google designed its chip in a collaboration with Samsung, which will no longer be the case with the Pixel 10 series, new chip is said to be a blend of proprietary designs and select external technologies. The Tensor G5 is said to be manufactured using TSMC's advanced 3nm N3E process, which means it will be more power-efficient while performing better than previous generations. Google being in control of the design would help the company achieve fewer bugs in the system, and could even help it bump up camera is the new chip everything cool that the Pixel 10 Pro will bring? Rumor has it that the Pixel 10 Pro may come with support for the Qi2 wireless charging standard. And at the moment, it could either be with a case, just like the Galaxy S25 phones, or a full-blown magnetic Pixel 10 Pro with an approach similar to Apple's MagSafe. Google hasn't offered Qi2 on previous Pixels. Now, there's the possibility that Google is looking into adding magnets to the Pixel 10 line, judging by the dimensions and weight that leaked (and all the Pixels are heavier and thicker than previous generations). Of course, the added weight could be due to the bigger batteries, but it could also be that Google has decided to place magnets to enable Qi2 support. Adding weight to this speculation is a report from June, which claims the Mountain View tech giant is prepping an ecosystem of magnetic Qi2 accessories, which may be called "Pixelsnap". There are reportedly going to be two chargers and a stand. Rumor has it that the Pixel 10 Pro may finally sport an upgrade to its PWM dimming rate, which would improve the display, especially for people who are sensitive to screen flicker. PWM plays a big role in the control of OLED display brightness. A higher rate of PWM would mean less stress on the eyes. Currently, Pixels use a 240Hz rate, but Google is said to be improving this with this year's Pixel phones. According to leaks, the Pixel 10 may come with a slightly bigger battery than its predecessor, a 4,870mAh one. The Pixel 9 Pro has a 4,700mAh battery cell. The upgrade may not be huge, but nevertheless, notable improvements in battery life are very likely, mainly thanks to the new Tensor G5 chip. As we mentioned, the Tensor G5 will be more energy efficient and powerful, and it will also be optimized for the Pixel 10 Pro more precisely, given that Google has more control over the design. This could allow for longer battery life, despite the modest number on the spec sheet. Rumors and leaks indicate that, on paper, the Pixel 10 Pro 's cameras won't be upgraded from last year. So, we expect a 50MP main camera, 48MP ultra-wide, 48MP telephoto with 5x optical zoom, and a 42MP front-facing camera. These are obviously familiar specs if you know the Pixel 9, but that doesn't mean there won't be any improvement in this department. Google is very strong in the software processing of its images, and it's always been. The new chip may also help here with its more powerful capabilities, and we have Gemini AI that's going to lend a hand.
