What's new in 2025? Big Kahuna Wing Festival returns to Knoxville with new name
This year's festival is set for Sunday, August 31, 2025, from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. in World's Fair Park in downtown Knoxville. Money raised in 2025 will benefit the Thompson Cancer Survival Center and Educator Resource Center. In 2024, the festival donated $55,000 to East Tennessee nonprofits.

'We're excited [to have] Covenant Health coming on board being our title sponsor for the year, [and] Ingles coming on board as our presenting sponsor. That's allowing us a whole lot of new items for the event that we're just excited about for year 12, and raising money for the great charities,' said Matt Beeler, owner and founder of Big Kahuna Wings.
New this year, the festival will include a Taste of Knoxville Pavilion and the Tennessee Tastemaker Competition, where local restaurants will be sampling food other than wings. Live music will go until 8:30 p.m., and the event will be capped off by a fireworks display at 9 p.m.

'We're expanding on what we're bringing to the table. So, we've got some new items in the kids' area, like the Ultimate Air Dogs coming in and doing shows throughout the day. Music-wise we've got Joe Lasher and his wife, Caitlin Baker, coming in along with the Fireside Collective and Arkansauce,' said Beeler.
General admission tickets are $25 in advance or $35 at the gate. Festival goers will also receive 15 complimentary wings. For more information or to get tickets, visit the festival's website. Tickets go on sale on July 2.

(WATE) — As Dollywood continues to welcome visitors for its 40th year of operation, the Pigeon Forge-based theme park has once again been recognized as one of the most popular theme parks in the world. Tripadvisor officials named Dollywood the number one theme park in the U.S. as part of its 2025 Travelers' Choice Best of the Best Awards. The 165-acre theme park is co-owned by Dolly Parton's entertainment company, Dolly Parton Productions, and Herschend Family Entertainment. Annual attendance regularly eclipses two million visitors, according to Dollywood is the largest employer in Sevier County and a 2021 study by the Tennessee Department of Transportation found that the park had an annual direct economic impact of $1.8 billion. While Parton famously does not ride roller coasters, the park has consistently added new attractions for visitors to enjoy. 'If I get on that thing, you'd find my wigs on one of those trees,' she joked in 2023 about the new 'Big Bear Mountain' roller coaster that can reach speeds up to 48 mph. Park officials revealed ahead of the 2025 season that plans are in the works for a new ride that is the 'biggest, most ambitious and possibly the most expensive project that the park has undertaken.' While project details have not yet been revealed, they said that visitors will 'take flight' in 2026. The awards are based on traveler reviews and ratings during a 12-month period. Travelers' Choice Best of the Best award winners are among the top 1 percent of listings, according to Tripadvisor. 'We don't provide the best guest experience in the country to try to win these awards,' said Dollywood Parks & Resorts President Eugene Naughton in a statement. 'We do it because it is the right thing to do. Our guests have options on where they can spend their time, and when they choose to visit us, we want to give them a world-class experience.' 'This award is humbling though, because it is derived from real reviews left by our actual guests describing their time here at our parks and resorts,' he added.

‘I will always be your little girl' Monroe County teen's farewell letters to family bring comfort
MONROE COUNTY, Tenn. (WATE) — The parents of a Monroe County teen who died last month found letters she had written to them before her death. Jason and Crystal Taylor are taking it one day at a time, adjusting to life without their middle daughter. Kayla Couch died on May 22 after being diagnosed with brain cancer again. She was 16. 'While I was hauling hay, she'd be practicing cheering. I'd be unloading hay, she'd be over in the field with the cows.' Kayla was a cheerleader at Sequoyah High School and was a member of the Monroe County Rescue Squad. On Sunday, Jason received an unexpected Father's Day gift: notes that Kayla had written to her family before she died. 'Crystal charged her phone back,' he said. 'She wanted a video of Kayla saying 'I love you, Mom,' or anything. As she was going through it, she found them.' In her note to her dad, Kayla said she is 'probably in heaven now,' and that she is thankful he met her mom. 'You stepped up to the plate and became my hero,' she wrote. 'In my eyes, you were nothing 'step,' you stepped up.' Jason said the notes were extra reassurance. Kayla also left notes for her mom and sisters, calling her mom her 'best friend,' and telling her sisters she's watching over them. 'We went to Duke. Once we got back from that, is whenever she got sick the next morning,' Jason recalled. 'So with that, she had already had the notes written, she didn't say nothing about it.' Her dad plans to honor her with an old car he's fixing up at the Jeep Invasion in August. Jason also said Kayla was working to collect pop tabs from aluminum cans for the Ronald McDonald House. She had a goal of collecting 1 million tabs. Her family plans to complete her goal. New artifacts at the Titanic Museum expected to sell for $1 million
PIGEON FORGE, Tenn. (WATE) — Two new artifacts have come to the Titanic Museum Attraction in Pigeon Forge. They are scheduled to go to auction where they are expected to sell for over $1 million, according to a press release. The artifacts are from the passengers Isador and Ida Straus. One is a pocket watch recovered with Isador's body, and the other is a letter that Ida wrote aboard the Titanic. Department of Justice comments on Zakai Zeigler lawsuit As the Titanic sank, Ida reportedly gave up her place on a lifeboat to remain with her husband saying, 'As we have lived, so will we die, together.' The artifacts will be at the museum until December 5, according to the museum's website. They are scheduled to go to auction in the United Kingdom and are expected to sell for more than $1 million.
